From MacArthur Boulevard, you can take a trail that leads roughly 0.4 miles down the ravine directly to the towpath. Whether you are biking the long stretches of the canal or enjoying a quiet walk by the water, the access here is incredibly convenient. The views from the bridge itself are breathtaking, sitting over 100 feet above Cabin John Creek, making it a perfect starting point for any outdoor adventure.
I am sure it's great for walkers and also if you know what to expect. I crossed it the first time coming home from Glenstone via Google and wasn't prepared for the narrow lane. Scary! Kept my eyes on the road so can't speak to the views. But amazing it's still operational.
This bridge was the longest single span masonry bridge in the world when it was built in 1859. Or so we were told as children.
In kindergarten at Clara Barton Elementary school, the bus took us over this bridge every day. The bridge was just a two lane bridge, with no pedestrian/bike lane. If you missed the bus, you had to squeeze past all the traffic to get to the other side.
When we were older, we looked at the bridge from Cabin John, and noticed a large access door in the side of the bridge. We speculated as to whether it was used by the Underground Railroad.
