What clients say about Fort Preble in South Portland (ME)

The place has been turned into a college. There is a light house you can walk out to. There isn't much left of the fort.

Short lighthouse that's really cool. The walk out to the lighthouse is fun. Huge boulders form the walkway. Mostly flat but you do need to watch your step.

Unless we're totally clueless, there was nothing here that was organized as a historic site. It's a crumbling ruin on a college campus. No signage or anything. Great views of the bay, and you can walk down to a cool lighthouse. Worth a side trip for that, but read up on your history before you arrive.

Very nice. Scenic. Nice walks. You can enjoy the water if you wish. The parking is limited.

Walked the grounds near the fort. There was no access to the fort when we were there. Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is near the fort so we walked over there. Pretty cool.

We visited the lighthouse area where we were able to walk out to it by way of walking on the rocks. Watch your step! I was able to get a Pic of Fort Preble from a distance. You can see alot of fishing boats in the distance as well. There is a restroom here but not much else.

Beautiful little spot with a couple short walking trails and a lighthouse, very peaceful area.

I came with the family to see the lighthouse, fort, and walk along the beach. I recommend planning to do something else in the area along with visiting the fort as it's not some grand attraction, it's just a dilapidated old fort and it was difficult for me to picture it in it's prime from what is left. It would be great if there was some signage with an old photo of what once was, but I didn't see such a sign today. There are breathtaking views of the water from the top of the hill, though.

The buildings are there’s, and it’s a great place to walk around, but not much else. I do love there old buildings! Some of Fort Preble's original early 20th Century brick buildings (including officers' quarters, barracks and a fire station) remain and are in a good state of preservation. Spring Point Ledge Light was built near the site in 1897. A 900-foot (270 m) granite breakwater that extends from the fort and surrounds the lighthouse was later added in 1951. So it’s fun to walk to the lighthouse. Lots of people walking their dogs.

Very walkable campus. A lot of different parking options, parks and historical sites to see. Please note the breakwater is a little difficult to walk so could be dangerous for anyone unstable or handicapped.

You can see the Spring Point Ledge light from this location, however if you want to get to the lighthouse, it's around the corner. Stairs are steep & small, so if you have walking difficulty, be very careful.

Nice little place to watch the sailboats go by and see the lighthouse and fort ruins. Parking is pretty hard to find at certain times of the day however

Located next to Spring Point Ledge Light ?️ and on the campus of Southern Maine Community College, this deteriorating and partially fenced off historical fort can be a bit of a challenge to explore. There is a path through a small woods that takes you to one part of the fort. You can get past the fence and walk along the top ? at your own risk. It looks like there was a partial collapse on one side of the fort. It doesn't help that a moron urinated on one of the walls when there are porta potties nearby. There are benches in one area but it is so overgrown you cannot use them. There are visible attempts to save the fort. It was built in 1808 and was in service from the War of 1812 through WW2. The original officer's quarters, barracks and fire ? station are still in use today. For history buffs, not the historical movie ? review channel on YouTube, it may be worth visiting. The fort has nice views. If you take your kids, keep an eye ?️ on them!

Fenced off unable to walk it. But fun to see and walk near. Lighthouse walk has large stones but need to have good mobility to walk it.

Amazing piece of history. Feels great to sit and think about what could have been and what the men and women who served here experienced.

It was a neat historical sight along a beautiful coastal scenery. Only wish that it wasn't foggy & drizzling rain during our visit.

We stopped on a whim while taking a mental health day. Breezy but beautiful after our noreaster yesterday.

This Fort is located on the campus of SMCC and parking is limited. If school is in session, there would likely not be any parking available as it’s all campus parking. We enjoyed walking around the area and seeing everything. There is also a lighthouse here at the site.

It was amazing to see. No parking around. There is a College near it. We couldn't park so we didn't stay for long. We where geocaching around the area. It has a nice walk way too.

Beautiful light house built in the 1800s. Was part of an active fort from the War of 1812 through the Second World War. Very easy to reach, but you’ll have to park in the community college to access the lighthouse. You can really take some great pictures of the lighthouse from the nearby beach area or along the rocky path leading to the lighthouse.

A great spot for ocean views, and a small amount of history. For someone who knows what they're looking for, I'm sure that the remains of the fort are very interesting. there isn't a lot in the way of signage or anything to tell you what you're looking at. However, the walk down to the lighthouse is great fun.

Pretty cool. Got some nice photos from out on the stone pier. There are good sized gaps between stones walking out the pier with pretty deep crevices if you have small kids or elderly family members.

One of my favorite places in Maine to just chill out with my family. The new wall is absolutely cool!! And the stairway to the water is cool!!!

A wonderful place to explore, especially with family and kids. You can walk out to the light house, look out the windows of the old fort, or travel down to the beach over the rocks. You can also go upstairs to get an even better view of the area. From here, you can see Peaks Island and other forts.

Plan to take your time to enjoy this area. I would like to see it kept cleaner and scrub grasses mowed to provide more space for flower gardens, however the wild flowers that grow in the unmaintained area are rather pretty. The light house can be viewed from several vantage points and there is quite the panorama of the boats on the water as well. The area looks neglected in places but that may be part of its charm. The parking is limited but if you are up to the walk you can park at Buglight or Willard beach parking lots and spend time wandering around.
