The Recovery Operations Center sells mulch and compost to the general public and offers drop-off services to Newport News residents. It is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on city-observed holidays, and is located approximately one mile north of Denbigh Boulevard.

Recovery operations and the folks that work there are great. What the problem is is waste Management provides the dumpsters for the recovery operations and they often fail to swap out the dumpsters. This is my second time there with no dumpsters to use. This last time took about 3 hours to get one dumpster out of the three that they have replaced. Hating a waste management not recovery operations.
Love having access to this place! Its paid for already on my NNSD bill. No more junk laying around my property! They also have great compost at a cheap price!
Checked their website which clearly says they're open today. Loaded my truck and drove there only to find they're closed. They updated their website to show they were closed on the holiday, but couldn't manage to show they were closed today. Obviously don't care about their customers.
I will not be renewing my business license in the city of Newport news because of the dump. They cause more headaches and turn more people away and i pay triple the taxes in Newport News.... not anymore
My rating is for this website, not the operations center itself. Is it too much to ask for a city employee to properly (correctly) update the hours of operation for holidays?!? Some people actually count on this information being correct before loading up and driving all the way out there. I know that I'm not the only one, because the three vehicles in front of me also had to turn around when they saw the locked gates and sign. So we all hauled our junk back home. I don't call that "considerate"!
Top notch with professional employees that tell you specifically where to go with what you have, so you’re not driving around aimlessly guessing where to put your recyclables or your trash.
It was my first time getting compost and the staff were so helpful. You pull onto the scale and then get out and go to the window with your license & pay. Then the staff loads it up for you. It was $6 cu yard and one yard filled up almost the whole truck bed. Very happy with the whole experience!
Horrible! I had a unpleasant experience with the man at the scale window . He was very unpleasant and grouchy. It's time for someone to retire. He never acknowledged me at the intercom then he didn't want me to ring the bell. " He told me to lay off the bell when I only touched it one time. " He is ill mannered and impatient.
Absolutely useless of a place. Went there 3 times and got 3 different answers and the last time they turn me away when I only have 2 children's mattresses. I'm just trying to move and they made it more difficult every step of the way. I have never had more horrible experience at a dump in my life.

Great and easy way to start/fill a garden! Pull up on the platform, get out and pay, pull to loading zone, they drop it in the bed and off you go. They say one yard but it literally fills up our dodge ram bed! You'll have to make more then one trip, going every weekend until spring hits!
Such a great location. Very convenient place to dispose of cardboard that doesn’t fit in our bin. Sometimes can take a couple minutes to get in and it’s almost always busy.
I love this place. The staff is always so wonderful. They have a wonderful sourting system to keep our city clean and with plenty of earthly resources at very affordable prices ready to beautify our community.
Always courteous and friendly. So glad they are open for sales again. Mulch and compost there is the best and best cost around! HIGHLY recommend going there if you life here.
They took all 15 gallons of old paint at one time. Did not ask for proof of residence even tho I brought it just in case. Just wrote it in and signed. Friendly staff.
Staff is great, service is great prices are great but, the barricades are a pain in the @$$. Obviously it is for customers safety but it is a pain......
