As an engagement photographer, this is one of the most beautiful locations for photos!! The hike is relatively short and the view is very rewarding. Tends to be crowded, but people are usually very kind to let you have a few minutes at the good spots. Can't wait to come back here!!
Such a fantastic place! Can get crowded depending on the time of year so I recommend going on in the winter on a clear, cold day for visibility, and solitude.
Great scenic views from the overlooks, hike is not tough but definitely wearing good shoes help, went 2 weeks for fall colors and it was a perfect spot to sit and relax. Parking can be hard during busy seasons, however there are other spots ahead to park and walk carefully to this spot, there are strenuous hikes as well.
One of my favorite places in NC. Unlike a lot of other places in the mountains, this is only a 10-15 minute hike making it probably top 3 places to watch a sunrise and sunset anywhere close to here. I want to add that if you’re coming from Hanging rock area, make sure you don’t miss parking. You have to park at “Roadside Parking near Tanawha Trail” if you type that in google map instead of rough ridge lookout , it will take you right there. We missed it and had to turn around. Also side note: some of the really cool pics of people sitting on the edge of the pointed rocks are in an area they are not supposed to be at. There are signs all over. It’s to protect the natural area.. so if you’re going for those pics specifically just know you will have to break the rules to get those shots.. so we decided not to. You can get amazing pics without that one shot at this location.
Great hike for beginners with such rewarding views ~ it is a bit steep so be extra cautious if going when the ground is wet.
There are no trashcans so please leave NO TRACE ❤️
Roadside Parking near Tanawha Trail (AKA Rough Ridge scenic spot) Once you park at the parking lot. there will be a sign show you if you want to turn left or right (There is not mention about the scenic Rough Ridge location.(they use something else name) Anyway choose the short part (left side trail) There are 3 big stones there you must hike and see once during the Falls season...
First stone you will use just 15-20 min to walk. These pictures are taken on Oct 26,2025.
I absolutely loved Rough Ridge Overlook! The view is breathtaking, and the hike up is little challenging but totally worth it. Perfect spot for anyone who enjoys scenic views
The Views are amazing, and the road beautifully, you can bring your dog if is friendly and are able to walk through the hard terrain to many rocks, and on weekends are crowded, still being a must to,bring water.
Rocky trail up but one of my favorite views. You can see for miles one way and see Grandfather Mountain the other way. Very crowded, especially during foliage season, but worth the crowds. There are multiple rocky overlooks as you go up; the further up you go, the less crowded they get. The trail is relatively steep but the workout is well worth it.
Great hike! No more than an hour to the top with great views! As long as you can get a parking spot you’ll be set, if you drive by a couple times more than likely a few spots will open up
Intense trail up. Good with taking breaks. If you only make it to the 1st overlook where the wooden deck steps start. That is a great spot too. Several overlooks. Worth the workout if you have the proper shoes. Stepping on rocks at angles is required. I would come back with hiking sticks/ poles.
Absolutely worth the stop and short hike. There are two amazing lookout points and many opportunities for incredible pictures. I'm so glad we stopped on our way home from the mountain resort.
I'd say it was about a 20-30 minute hike each way and that's with two curious kids who make lots of stops.
The parking was busy like we were told, but we found a space.
This was a fabulously beautiful hike. Not a bunch of parking so go early. There were 3 places to hike to, all of them have gorgeous views!! This is a strenuous hike with many stairs and muddy spots. If you hike to the first stop it’s about 1/2 mile. If you go all the way up it’s almost a mile. All the way up and back is 1.8 miles.
This trail is narrow, pretty much all rocks, and a bit perilous when it's wet. That being said, to me it's worth the effort.
Took us (61 yrs old) about 35 mins to go up to the end of the Rough Ridge Trail (the Tanawha Trail continues on).
About 10 mins in from the start, you get to a set of platforms ans steps with great views. Another 25 mins gets you to a big white boulder with more great views and your turnaround point.
Not a Trail for someone with weak ankles or knees, but doable by most, just be careful. This whole Ridge is just a bunch of rocks, with some nice vegetation and great views, although the Trail itself is mostly enclosed by trees and vegetation, and is narrow.
This one of the best views you can get in NC. The hike from the parking area off the parkway is less than half a mile and so worth it! It gets very busy so I would suggest getting there early. We arrived around 830am on a Saturday and there was still parking, but it was mostly fun by the time we came back down.
Beautiful trail! We went at midday and it was lovely, but this trail would be magical for a sunrise hike. Use the mile markers to find the small parking lot at the trailhead. If you have rickety knees, take your hiking poles - makes it much easier! Don’t miss the iconic shot on the second rock outcrop!
Absolutely amazing views! It's a gorgeous place to stop and enjoy a little peace and quiet while taking in the beautiful land that surrounds the area. It was very clean and well maintained,not a whole lot of traffic either, so we had a great time moving our way over the mountain at our own pace so we could take everything in and enjoy our day together. I definitely recommend everyone take the time to take a break from the mundane everyday life they have burning them out to reconnect with nature and all the wonders of the universe and check out this little spot of tranquility.
We were so so sad it was foggy during our trip:( we made the most of it and it was still a beautiful experience. The expected easy hike was a bit more challenging due to the muddiness from the fog, but it was still enjoyable. Definitely will be coming back when it’s not foggy!
