We ended up buying a piece of cherry wood from Carolina Urban custom wood for a fireplace project that we're having installed. I can't tell you how friendly these guys are and how willing they are to support your project. We inadvertently came in after hours and the team opened the doors to us and helped us select a piece of wood even though they were closed. They have gorgeous pieces of wood to select from and great prices for the product that they procure. Highly recommend!
Josh was great. Quick responses to emails, gave me a quick tour of their yard, negotiated a price for a finished Walnut mantel. Very happy with the process.

Carolina Urban is wonderful to work with! I have several of their pieces — live edge floating shelves, mantels, and most recently a gorgeous live edge bar table — and every one of them is absolutely beautiful. We happened across Carolina urban lumber by accident and are so happy we did. I’m by no means an expert carpenter, just a dad looking to make cutting boards and other wood crafts with his kids. We were immediately greeted by Damon, who was super friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us a tour of their selection, taking the time to teach us about the differences in lumber and showing us some unique and special pieces. My kids had many questions and he kindly answered them all. We bought several pieces of live edge to make gifts for friends and im super happy to be able to craft with them thanks to the lumber we received from them. I will definitely be stopping by whenever I’m on the south side of town.
Carolina Urban Lumber is my go-to shop for live edge slabs and milled lumber. They specialize in harvesting wood from trees that fall or are cut down in the city. This wood is impractical for bulk logging operations and would otherwise end up chipped and used as mulch or discarded. As a result, they have a wide variety of species that changes constantly. If you don't see what you want, come back in a few days.
In addition to the wood, they have a full shop and offer services from minor milling to full custom furniture builds. I had them prepare a slab for me with epoxy fill, flattening and rough sanding and it was great work. They have also cut several large slabs down for me to fit into the pickup truck, at purchase time and with no waiting.
I'll close by saying that the crew there has always been friendly and knowledgeable. When I first started woodworking I had a ton of questions and they took the time to answer them all. Can't say enough good things about CUL and the crew there.
Update 16 Oct 25 - CUL has reorganized the retail side of the house to make more room for their workshop so I've uploaded some new photos showing the slab/cookie showroom and some of the other areas. CUL remains my go-to for slabs and lumber for all my projects.
From the wood species options to the completed product, the team at CUL offers custom designs and solutions that are at a very high quality. They are talented across the board and I would highly recommend them if you are looking for custom wood options, projects both small and large (they did both for us), to enhance your space.
Wonderful service and selection. Picked out a beam for a mantel, they had it cut and me out the door within 30 minutes of making selection. They also offer finishing and installation. A unique place to find some unique finishing touches to your home.
We have now bought 2 specialized tables from Damon. The first one is what I describe as a co work bar height desk. Can seat 10- for a home dining room we converted into an office. It's a magnolia and absolutely gorgeous.
And of course follow his Instagram. And saw a table that could fit us for a kitchen/ family dining table. We talked on it and he wanted to come over and get some measurements. I really like to rely on the experts when doing something like this, so we really gave him the reigns here with all decision making. Again, produced an amazing product that I stare at in wonder- daily.

I approached them with a complex table build and a very quick turnaround (we’re talking only 2 weeks). I spoke with half a dozen businesses in the area, and Damon and his team were the only ones who confidently said, "Yes, we can."
They were incredibly helpful in figuring out what could realistically be done within my timeframe and budget. We needed a custom table to fit between built-in seating, and Damon and Josh literally spent hours fine-tuning the design to make sure it was perfect for the space. (See picture!)
The crew even delivered and installed the table a day early, and we are absolutely thrilled with the result. We hosted a party yesterday, and the table was the topic of conversation. So thankful for their craftsmanship, creativity, and customer service!

I was looking for a stunning piece of lumber to make a large (9’ x 8’) L-shaped desk for my new home. A friend gave me a list of lumber places around the Triangle area, but most were only wholesale. The last place on the list was Urban Lumber. La because of the distance (2.5 hours one way).
After talking to Josh, I drove over and checked them out. I was blown away by the choices and the skill of everyone working there.
I purchased 2 slabs of Red Oak for a shockingly great price. Josh and I determined which part of the slabs we would use for the desk. I had enough left for a bench for my front door entryway and 2 large shelves (32” long and 12”-15” deep). I brought home the remaining “scraps” and have made 4 small, unfinished shelves for artwork. I also have enough for several small projects that may come my way.
Next, we picked out the perfect stain. Six weeks later, I drove over and picked everything up.
I am blown away by how gorgeous everything is. The bench fits the space perfectly, and the desk is exactly as I pictured it. I still need to hang the shelves, but I'll try to add photos when I finish that project.
Assembly was easy as the crew made the dominoes and included the dog bones.
Such an amazing experience!! I went in to find some wood to make a table for my art classroom. I was greeted by Damon, who is the founder and owner of Carolina Urban Lumber. From the second I met him, he was very genuine, kind, knowledgeable and also a great listener.. this all led to amazing suggestions for my project! He walked me around their shop and showed me all the different options explaining everything in detail. All their work is top-notch. I could also feel the positive/happy energy in the shop from the employees who were working. Lots of smiles, both employees and customers. The next day I came back with my friend and had an even better experience- Damon spent lots of time with us showing us the process of joining, planing and sanding three pieces of wood to build a table. He was so patient and thorough! We then walked out of the building with not only a forever long beautiful table but also more knowledge and skill of woodworking. This is a one of a kind business and super rare. Highly recommend!!!!!
Where do I start. Damon and his crew are amazing. They are extremely knowledgeable, focused on creating amazing artwork, as well as timely. I have purchased upwards now of 10 tables from Carolina urban lumber and we are never disappointed. These guys absolutely rock. 10/10 would recommend them!
I had the guys make me 2 barn doors. They were nothing but nice and helpful. For someone who doesn’t do many projects around the house they made the whole process easy. Final result was stunning. They glued together, cut, and sanded beautiful pieces of ash for me and texted me throughout the process to ensure I was happy with the wood choices. Can’t say enough.
Perfection does not seem description enough! Had the team create a black walnut live edge island top with waterfall edge for our new home and we could not be any more thrilled with how it came out. Great selection of local hardwoods; maple, oak, cedar, black walnut, chestnut and some old barn wood planks. Great service from the staff. Picture is of a large piece of cedar which became a mantle after a few days of work. Very pleased with purchases. On most recent visit, they have a very large assortment of love edge slabs.
I purchased a $500 slab and the wood split within 1 week. I was told “we’re sorry” without any help at a resolution. I’ve worked with them before and been pleased but I was hoping for a little bit better communication with my issue. No reply to my email as well with pictures.
Can't say enough great things about Kristen and the team. From guiding us through the slab selection to stains, sheen, and legs, the whole experience was pleasant. We can't stop touching and looking at the table and bench. It is absolutely perfect.
Will definitely be coming back for another project soon!
This place has so many tree options when it comes to life-edge wood or if you need some custom wood pieces created. The people are amazing, knowledgeable and super helpful!
Start "stalking" them on facebook to stay up to date on what they have coming out of their kiln. We are proud owners of a beautiful dining table measuring 42" in width by 86" or so in length! They glued 2 pieces of sweet gum pieces, yet you CAN'T see the seam at all - looks like one piece. Also used a life edge walnut piece to create our bar top. We certainly will be back since house project never seem to end.
We asked Damon and the team to help us with a new desk with large dimensions. Kristen helped us find some beautiful beech lumber, Damon and team matched the desk perfectly to our stain requirements. Now we have more than a desk, we have a work of art that will last us forever. We highly recommend the team from Carolina Urban Lumber.
