Trying to arrange pickup of a stolen vehicle is nearly impossible at this tow lot. They NEVER answer their phone & don't check records when the tow company arrives resulting in multiple trips, wasted money and time. This is the second time dealing with this horrible business. Even the detective complained that he could never get through to their office. They should lose their contract with the city/state. Despite a "hold harmless" and "waive of fees" by the detective, they kept trying to charge us and insist we had to be there personally. It took several back and forth calls until they relented but with attitude. Negative stars are deserved here.

Got put up in the slums, next day whenever I went to pick my car up that got towed my 1000 camera was stolen out of it. I’m raising hell until I get it back.

Hands down, the WORST city service I’ve dealt with over a lifetime in KC. My vehicle was improperly ticketed and towed twice. The office was closed without explanation when I arrived to pick up the vehicle, during the posted open hours. No one ever answers the phone. When I was finally able to pay for the tow and pick up the vehicle, the female service agent at the window was horrible to deal with. The worst attitude you could imagine, hostile and disrespectful for no reason at all. Both of my tickets were appealed and dismissed, so I applied for a refund of the tow fees. Unfortunately, those applications go through the same tow office, with the same nasty representatives. LeRon Ford denied both of my refund applications because “KCPD authorized the tow”. KCPD also issued the tickets that were dismissed, so hard to follow that logic. Next was navigating the labyrinth of City Hall to try and apply for a Property Maintenance Appeals Board hearing to appeal the refund decision. Good luck and Godspeed to anyone who finds themselves in this position, it was nearly impossible to find someone who could help me or even know what I was talking about. $50 application fee and TEN MONTHS LATER, I am granted a hearing. LeRon Ford shows up to the hearing, pulls me out of the room, and finally agrees to give me a refund. No explanation or apology provided. The incompetence in this office is unrivaled.
Tow Lot Director Nathan Pare is also complicit in this abysmal behavior from everyone in that office. I left multiple voicemail messages with him to discuss the refund issues and never heard back. Read some of the other reviews, these are common experiences over years. (Pare “retired” and now works for St Joseph city services. All of those announcements conveniently leave out his incredible tow lot experience)
I followed every instruction and posted rule regarding tow lot procedures. I printed paper copies of all evidence and hand-delivered paper refund applications to LeRon at the tow office. (Evidently they just completely ignore online applications for refund, I submitted several that were never acknowledged) They forced me to get a hearing, only to reverse course and avoid any real accountability for their decision. Still, I got taken for a ride and my money held hostage for a year with no explanation. 0 stars.Dec 30, 2025 -

This is not an easy job dealing with people like myself that are already mad they’re in this spot, so the fact that they took the time to explain to me what documents I needed and were really kind, when they didn’t have to be, because I sure wasn’t - I really believe they care and I’m grateful for how much they helped me in a difficult situation .

Be prepared to pay a $300 ransom to get your car back after they steal it. They also broke my bumper, but because the driver took "before pictures" they're not liable. Funny coincidence, the trucks do not have cameras on them, and there's "no way that they would damage my bumper and then drop the car to take a picture before they tow". Now I'm about $1500 in debt for damages and retrieval. Do better KC.

These people are so shady & will hang up on you when you ask questions. Condescending when you ask for options on what to do. We heard “LIKE I SAID- “ with so much disrespect it’s insane. They are seeing people in frantic situations on their worst day & show absolutely no compassion or professionalism. When asked if we would be charged for extra fees while we got our situation taken care of with our lawyer & courts - they agreed to no fees, wouldn’t give us written documentation of this, & then gaslit us when we showed up with the proper documentation for pick up that “we must have misunderstood, they don’t do that” even though we talked to the same clerk & had a different manager confirm our arrangement. They claimed to contact us & final way to contact us was a letter & it’s not their fault I didn’t get it. They sent it out on a Friday & I was in this establishment on Wednesday so this was deliberate to put us in this position to pay more. Mail never moves that fast & everyone knows this. It’s the most disgusting display of running a business I’ve ever seen & I pray these people get the training they need to learn compassion, integrity, & overall people skills. I hope no one has to experience what I’ve had to deal with here.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would yesterday my fiancé and I came in to get our car that was ILLEGALLY towed, the manager Danielle was so RUDE! We came with all the proper paperwork, she was not very polite at all, to be a manager and yell and scream at people what kind of business is this? And to take a car that there was no illegal activity done to get it towed therefore that’s grand theft auto. She refused to give my fiancé his license back, again began to scream at us, I called 911 as I was talking to dispatch the dispatcher asked my name and Danielle screamed and pointed her finger at the glass yelling YEAH WHATS YOUR NAME WHATS YOUR NAME she then proceeded to say we had to leave. She locked the doors as I started filming, she shut all the blinds. A man was outside and she was rude to him screamed at him someone took him to his car to get his belongings and Danielle told this man his car wasn’t even there, when he just told her he went and got his stuff, I called yesterday and spoke to someone today I’ve called 8 times I’ve left messages and no call back. When the police came she wouldn’t even open the door for them, they had to call their supervisor to call them and have them open the doors, at this point they are committing a felony grand theft we literally just got this car, this lady Danielle has no business working with customers or people in general. WE HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS AND YOU ARE STILL WITHHOLDING OUR VEHICLE THAT WAS WRONGFULLY TOWED. You’ll be charged with grand theft auto if you do not return our car.

If anyone could help me let me know. I’m from Minnesota and my car broke down because of a pothole in monarchy highway im new around here so id thought my car would be good of the exit but when I came back the next day it was gone. I went to look at the tow lot the lady at the front counter was rude as hell. When I asked for a number so I could complain she was rude saying she couldn’t help me it was either pay or go to the police station. I’ve just never been in a state like that. And I will sue the city and make a complaint for sure. Just know they’re unprofessional, this is coming from a 19 yr old

I have never encountered such insensitive and unprofessional behavior in my life. My young daughter, who recently moved to Kansas City, had her car stolen, leaving her and her baby stranded outside a restaurant. Thankfully, we had OnStar, which helped locate her car along with five other stolen vehicles. The police informed my daughter that, as a victim of a crime, there would be no charges for retrieving her car.
However, when my daughter went to pick up her vehicle on 2/25/25, she encountered an incredibly rude woman who told her she wasn’t a victim and that nothing in life comes for free. I have filed a formal complaint with the Mayor’s office about the lack of professionalism and courtesy displayed by this city worker. I have also tried multiple times to contact the office directly to file a complaint against Danielle from KC Towing, whose heartless attitude was completely unacceptable.
If you ever deal with this company, be cautious. I urge others to voice their concerns to the Mayor’s office and keep track of case numbers until appropriate action is taken against this organization.Feb 26, 2025 -
Terrible customer service drove 30 mins to get a tow refund sheet and was told I had to go to the police department which makes no sense. When the tow impound took my money . Called the police department and they said they had no clue why she would’ve told me that. Lady even got rude when I took a picture of the sign that clearly states the tow refund is processed through this company. Now I have to drive another 30 mins out of my way .

They do not answer the phone. The computer systems are down and there is no updated message on their phones to inform you as to whether or not they are open. You have to drive back and forth to find out if they are open. When you get there, they put a sign on the door-- but by then you have already wasted your gas and time taking off work, etc.

Worst experience ever. "IT issues" causes them to lock their front door. When you see that the door is lock, they have a note advising to call them. When you call them, it goes to voicemail and you don't get a return call (this has now been 5 business days).

So I caught one of the tow drivers out there and made plans for him to retrieve my stolen truck. An hour and a half later I asked where he was and a 'supervisor' came charging out saying he was "gone on an emergency tow... and she was the only one who could order a tow!" and strangely she could quote rates. $100 for hook up and $4 a mile." Seemed odd that she would run off my tow truck driver, until I learned the word on the street is a certain 'supervisor' has a brother with a tow service. I think I understand now....

The people that work here are fine. You can tell they don’t like what they do but they probably get complained to a lot and blamed for peoples vehicles getting towed. Seriously, don’t blame them. They just work there, they can’t fix your car being impounded or paying your citation. Be nice to them. Process was quick and easy as long as you follow the directions. However, I had my car towed because I parked in front of my house and I work night shift, unfortunately, slept through my alarm to move my car off the front of my house because M-F 8am-6pm, you can’t park on that side of the street. My bad. So it was towed. But the person who towed my car damaged my vehicle. My bumper has dents and scratches down to the metal on the back (I take pictures of my front and rear bumper every time I park my car so I know if it’s been damaged in a hit and run, etc). Obviously not much I can do about it, and I only own a older Honda, but it’s just pretty disrespectful. I understand I accidentally parked on “a city street” in front of my own driveway, that’s on me. But that doesn’t give people the right to damage my property. I think a lot of people who assume those who get their car towed or impounded are bad people who break the law or don’t listen, but in reality it was just a simple mistake…that cost me $320 and a damaged bumper. Kansas City…do better.

Jalen was super informative and guided me to recover my stolen vehicle. The lot allowed me to see it and decide if I want to pay the fee to get it out.

My car got stolen last night, was abandoned by the thief, and then towed to this lot. It's Sunday and the employee on the phone told me there is no possible way for me to access my car before Tuesday bc of the holiday weekend. I live 3 hours away. This is incredibly frustrating.
Update: My request for my tow fee was denied even though my car was stolen, the decision took over a month to make, and the only way I can appeal is to pay $50 and appear in court in KC 3 hours from my home? Absolutely ridiculous.Mar 24, 2023 -
BEWARE OF THE WORKER ERIC
most mansplaining, gas lighting and narcissistic worker I’ve ever dealt with. If a customer is talking to you over the phone let them talk :) stop raising your voice stop interrupting every second and talking over me. Then he has the audacity to tell me I cannot get my car and basically tough luck and they have different rules at the “tow zone” no you don’t you were just upset for whatever reason and took it out on me. Idk if a womens never stood up to you before or what but…don’t ever hang up the phone on a customer when the customer never Rose their voice or gave you attitude like you gave them:).
Very very unprofessional and very concerned if Eric is feeling alright. Like that’s a lot of built up anger.
The only reason I’d even give one star is for Danielle, you were such a fricking sweetheart, you listened to me and told me the truth about what I had to bring (which is what I told Eric at the start but guess it’s Eric’s way or the hang up the phone type way.) Danielle was amazing at her job, laughed, professional, short and sweet. Thank you for being the worker everyone wants when they have to deal with there car being towed. Hopefully Eric can learn a thing or twoSep 23, 2022 -
Walked in and the lady didnt even look my way and had me stand there for 5 minutes before she decided to get up and then fidgets with things at the register before asking me what she could help me with. Then asks for my title, gives it back and asks for me to pull it out of the envelope (like she couldn't do it herself) then PULLS OUT A TOOTSIE ROLL and STARTS EATING IT while "assisting" me (yes, she's big) and as soon as the gentleman comes in has him do everything else. He was very kind and helpful he gets five stars she gets none. Give him a raise and GET RID OF HER nobody needs that much laziness and rudeness SITTING around!...oh and nobody ever answers the phone

I had a decent experience here. They did their job well. They impounded and secured my stolen, totalled vehicle behind a locked gate for a good two weeks and did not bug me once about the time-frame. They performed a CSI analysis at this site as well of which it's well-equipped to handle. They allowed me access when I needed it. Additionally, they answered their phone during business hours nearly every time I called and I had to call multiple times for reasons unrelated to the Impownd Lot.
Thanks for recovering my stolen vehicle KCMO PD in only 4 days! I just hope the these worthless theives will learn how to drive next time before they total another vehicle it in a long high-speed chase! LolNov 27, 2019 -
I went in with bad expectations based on the terrible reviews. But was pleasantly surprised when I was greeted nicely by the two women at the front desks. They were kind, informative and patient. The only thing I am obviously mad about is my car being towed in the first place parking on a residential street I live on, but lesson learned. I love good customer service and will always let a company know when I’ve experienced such.

Please avoid this location's auctions due to the difficulty in removing your purchases: My husband purchased 5 very nice family vehicles from the auction on 2-19-2019. While he has years of experience purchasing vehicles from auto auctions, this was our first time with the Kansas City Tow Lot Auction. These vehicles all are in running condition. We live in Iowa and were looking forward to a nice crisp day moving our vehicles home. While the auction ran beautifully, attempting to pick up these vehicles is a NIGHTMARE, to say the least! We had to hire a locksmith to manufacture new keys, as the vehicles had no keys. The lot personnel would not allow the locksmith onto the lot. We were told they use to allow the locksmith, but have changed the rules. Many of the buyers were extremely upset! We were forced to load the vehicles onto a trailer in a very unsafe manner, as they would not steer, and transport them to the street. We were then told we could not allow the locksmith to re-key on the public street. We were forced to move the vehicles several blocks, where a locksmith then re-keyed our vehicles for us. This process was so time consuming, we spent all afternoon and only moved 2 vehicles. As I stated, we haven't had issues on any other auction lots in the past 30 + years. We strongly urge you to avoid this location!

Incompetence at its max. The employees had no idea what they were doing and lied continuously about information. When asked to speak to a manager someone came up and said that he was the manager and he was as high of a rank as it went for the building. This gentleman then constantly kept turning around to ask the other employees what the answers to our questions were. Managers should never have to ask their employees the answers to common routine questions. This “manager” then continuously told us to look up the answers to our questions instead of just helping us and telling us what we needed to do.

Poor staff. My car was stolen and was dropped here. I called down to have my ins company have authorization to tow car. They told me to come down and fill out a form.
I walked in and told the lady I had gotten off the phone with them and needed to fill out a form. She asked for bill of sale, title, etc. I wasn’t told any of these over the phone. She was rude, unprofessional, and quite frankly, worthless.
Extremely disappointed.Nov 21, 2018 -
Wish it were possible to give 2 and a half stars. Appreciate the job that they do, and the employees were great in my experience. However, I do think they need to open much earlier than 9am. Also, idk who sets the fees because after all, it is a police tow lot, but I think it's completely ridiculous that my vehicle got stolen, and when it was recovered and towed here, I was not notified for several days. Now I have to pay $560 to get it back.....? In my opinion those fees should be applied to the degenerate who stole my car with the rest of his court fees.....

I went.out to buy a car and it is a bit over whelming at first to see. Everyone is. So nice to help you and it turned out to be a lot of fun.oh and got.a Car! Make sure to read all of the regulations. so you won't be in violation or late fee for the rules. Now my Mom wants me to get her a car. The prices are what we make them. All very reasonable. I would recommend anyone to go. I have ridden a bus for a year up and down Troost and have told anyone who wanted to talk to me about the auction. I no at least four more people strangers I convinced yeah go get ya a car!
