I love supporting local businesses, but this time was a huge disappointment. A year after I had 25 6ft evergreen trees planted by John, I found out that he left the burlap wrapped around the trunks, didn’t pull back the wire baskets, and completely buried the root flares in 3 inches of dirt on EVERY tree. If you are reading this and don’t know what any of that means for the health of the tree, don’t feel bad…..neither does YSI. All of these errors make the trees weak (structurally unstable, bark rot, root girdling), susceptible to insect infestations and diseases, and can kill all the trees. The worst part about all of this is that I asked John directly if he cut back the burlap and cages and he said “yes”. I came to find out by accident a year later that he buried all of it with a few inches of dirt. This was an extremely shady tactic and straight up negligence.
I called both American Tree and Weigand’s to confirm what he did was bad practice for planting trees and they both stated that it was “lazy work and should be corrected as soon as possible”. So instead of enjoying this Spring I am instead cutting back all the burlap around the trunks of 25 trees and exposing the root flare so the trees have a better chance of survival.
I will continue to always support our local businesses, but YSI will NOT be one of them. I should have listened to the warning’s others gave me, but I went out on a limb to support someone taking over the business from their dad. This was a huge investment for our family and we don’t mind paying for quality work, but that is not what we received.
I highly advise people to go with someone more reputable that can be trusted. The only good this YSI did was get their trees from Weigand’s. American Tree is also a great local place that provides great plants and knowledge.
I wish I didn’t have to type this review, but I want to make sure others are warned and I truly hope John changes his ways and doesn’t do this to others in the future.
