What clients say about Electronics Service Center in Germantown (MD)

I have relied upon Electronics Service Center and its owner, Jimmy Diaz, over the past several years to keep my vintage '73 Marantz 2230 stereo receiver running and sounding great, long past its original life expectancy. I have found Mr. Diaz to be a straight-shooter, good communicator, honest, fair priced, and extremely competent in his field of electronics repair. In this region very few highly competent audio repair shops exist; I highly recommend this one. - Michael James

Jimmy is an electronics wizard and great person overall, business aside. I am beyond thrilled with the work he completed. Spectacular experience overall. Thank you sir.

Very warm and attentive. Strongly recommend for your electronics needs. I needed help with a custom board and they were able to take care of the problem, and provide some mitigation to prevent the problem from happening again later. Knowledgeable and thorough.

I don't write reviews...ever! Jimmy is such a humble guy and so good at what he does. He's a breath of fresh air. He's friendly, and I can't say enough about him. He fixed something of great sentimental value to me...he's great, and the price was right! Thx Jimmy

Really helpful in resolving a problem with a vintage HK stereo. Provided sage advice on solving the problem and shared information about options to pursue. I think a full restoration is going to provide the best bang for the buck. And I will have it done here, without question. It will be money well spent. Owner is very friendly and I have the sense he views each unit as his own. He is like a doctor and he seems to be well versed in any ailments of the patients needing attention (he does wear a lab coat, so I am not exaggerating....!)

I bought a 45 year old turntable into ECS thinking the cartridge was shot and I would be looking at an expensive repair. Jimmy took a quick look, connected the turntable to a system and determined the problem was not with the cartridge or turntable. The problem ultimately turned out to be bad wiring to another component.

The proprietor of this store is a store-house of knowledge on all things audio. I started with bringing him a turntable worse for the wear due to transport from Singapore. While I had given up on it, he was able to restore to a pristine sound. I have worked on a few audio devices and speakers and can definitely vouch for his mastery in the field. Bonus, he is always willing to train you and walk you over the repair.

I shipped my Bang & Olufsen Beocord 4500 cassette recorder to Electronic Service Center for repair after a phone conversation with the owner. The owner was very knowledgeable about the B&O unit which gave me confidence it could be repaired. Once the repairs were done the unit was damaged in the return shipment which was totally due to the shipper's mishandling and was NOT due in any way to the service center. After a brief conversation with the owner, the item was re-sent, the new damage was repaired and returned to me in perfect condition. I was greatly appreciative of the owner's concern for making it all happen. It is getting harder to find repair centers that will handle vintage equipment, but the entire experience was more than what most repair services provide. Thanks to that I have a working unit once again and at a reasonable service fee. I highly recommend the Electronic Service Center.

I’m an amateur audiophile and found Electronics Service Center back in the 90’s when I needed repair of my B&O Beogram 4002 Straight Line Tracking turntable. I was skeptical of finding someone who could work on this highly esoteric piece of audio equipment and stumbled upon Electronics Service Center. They did so and wonderfully! Recently, I took them a Vasant GS-120S integrated amp with a blown channel. I picked it up and when I hooked it up at home, the other channel blew! I took it back in and when I went to pick up the repaired amp again with my speakers and cables in hand, they discovered that my cables were at fault! They took the time to educate me on the danger of errant wires and did not charge me for the second repair! Great service and honorable dealings with the public. Use this business to do all of your repairs!

I inherited a Beogram 4002 that did not work. Due to its sentimental value, I spent years researching the best option for its repair. After contacting Bang & Olufsen, we were told that they do not do vintage repairs in house and that they actually ship their work to Electronics Service Center. I've been bringing my turntable to ESR ever since and trust no one else with it. I highly recommend Jimmy, he is meticulous, honest, well-priced and his expertise is rare, if not unmatched, on the Eastern Seaboard.

Electronic Service Center did a great job repairing and calibrating my stereo components. They stand by their repairs and I will always trust them with my components. Very personable and fair pricing for the repair work done. I have recommended them to my friends.

I have been a long time customer of Electronics Service Center and have always been impressed and pleased with their competence and service ethic. The firm's service is thorough, efficient and friendly. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. In my latest experience, I recently had a recurring problem with an equipment part that is no longer manufactured. The staff demonstrated creative resourcefulness and actually built a replacement part from material that is more reliable than the original and did extensive quality control testing before returning my unit back to me! I highly and unreservedly recommend Electronics Service Center.

UPDATE: I took my receiver to another repair shop after it failed for a 3rd time. It turns out the transistors blew so replacing the fuse didn’t solve the problem. Perhaps I was too quick to agree it was my fault. Frustrating that I threw away over $200 only for my receiver to likely be kaput… Jimmy always goes above and beyond in his service in my experience. I’m a newbie to stereo set up and after my receiver blew a short the first time I brought it in and not only did he fix, he gave me a couple reasons as to why it might have blown. It took a while to get fixed, but this was due to the difficulty of tracking down the parts. Once I got the receiver back as soon as I connected it at home it didn’t work bc the other fuse blew. I finally brought back the cables, speaker and receiver and Jimmy walked me through all the possible reasons the fuse would have blown again. The repair came with a warranty so the next time he only charged me for parts even though the error was my fault. Lots of integrity and knowledge here. He fixed the speaker wires which turned out to be the issue.

Jimmy at Electronics Service Center has been my go-to audio equipment repair person for more than a decade. He has fixed and upgraded my turntables, amps, and even an antique 1970s turner. Jimmy is both old school and extremely friendly. He does not over-promise or overcharge. The repair is made on-time. The service is high-end professional. I give Electronics Service Center 5 stars only because 6 stars is not an option.

I had a terrible experience with this center. The spokesman, Jimmy Diaz called the receiver I purchased Inferior! He said it would take 3 to 6 months to get it repaired because the part was not in stock. A few days later I talked with this person, he said the inferior receiver was fixed and ready for shipping back to me. Well I received the receiver and it still doesn’t work. Has no sound for the rear speakers. The same problem it had before. THEY DIDNT REPAIR THE RECEIVER. THIS CENTER IS REALLY A WASTE OF TIME.

Had work done on a 40 yr old TEAC reel-to-reel. Works perfectly and the price was extremely reasonable. I will not take my audio components anywhere else!

Jimmy was very VERY professional and upfront about the lead time for the repairs. This is one place where I never had to constantly ask about the status of my service request; Jimmy kept me informed throughout the whole process. Did I forget to mention that he did an OUTSTANDING job with my speaker repair? Trust me, even if your equipment is on warranty, it’s more than worth it to pay this shop for its service. The store is nondescript on the outside, but is TRULY a hidden gem once you go inside…well worth the hour + drive from my home. I’ll NEVER use another store again! Well done Jimmy.

Really great experience with Jimmy at ESC. He let me know when to bring in my Technics SL1200 mkII turntable (that i've had as a DJ for almost 30 years) that was giving me issues with a buzz and unbalanced sound. He troubleshot my issue with some testing, assessed the problem and was able to diagnose what is and what isn't working. If you think you know about stereo equipment, get ready to be humbled and learn from a master technician. He is very clear about what type of investment you'll need to make in order to save your equipment without beating around the bush, this ability comes from historical knowledge of devices from times beyond our own. Along with the diagnosis, he has some awesome disc players, turntables and more in the lobby, enjoy! Hopefully I won't have to go back but if I do, I know exactly where to go.

my 50+ year old dual 1229 turntable had finally decided that all the years of use had quite literally gummed up the works. while it is far more common today to simply toss out old electronics and to replace them with something new, i am a firm believer that something that was built with quality and durability deserves a chance to continue to provide years of service if you are lucky enough to find a craftsman who has the required skills and takes pride in their work. luckily, jimmy at the electronics service center is just that person and he was able to restore my turntable back to its original showroom performance for a very reasonable price and with the knowledge that he stands behind his work. in this age of throwaway culture, i would encourage anyone who has something that either for sentimental reasons or because you know just how well made your equipment is, to consider letting the electronic service center breathe new life into it before you buy something new that was designed to be replaced rather than repaired. I could not be happier and would recommend this wonderful craftsman to everyone I can.

Always a great experience with Electronics Service Center! Had two 20-year-old power amps with dead channels and he was able to quickly repair them both. Later, one amp developed issues again with ~2 weeks left on the extended warranty, so he repaired it for free. Even if it wasn't free, his prices are very reasonable! Highly recommended!

Excellent service, i have done 4 my audio gears here and extremely satisfied what Jimmy have done with them. In addition, Jimmy is very friendly, and knowledgeable i enjoy talking with him and learn a lot even he is very busy with tons of waiting customer. Since he has a lot of customers, i am happy to wait for couple weeks to get my audio repaired. Quality is better than rush. Highly recommend.

At a very fair price, Jimmy has serviced several of my vintage Marantz receivers. You'll be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable, honest , fair priced, mom & pop electronic repair shop anywhere in the Maryland, DC or northern VA area. Jimmy takes the time (and I mean takes the time) to clearly explain what repairs are necessary. This man actually cares! His pricing is so good, it surprises me how he stays in business. I chalk it up to volume and the fact that Jimmy has repair down to a science. Each time I was there, several people arrived to leave their equipment and at least one person picked up their serviced equipment and thanked Jimmy profusely. Jimmy even told one person that he should not repair his receiver but buy a new one and Jimmy doesn't even sell equipment. Bottom line is that Jimmy specializes in high end audio repair and can repair virtually anything audio related and at fair pricing. FYI: A good while back, "Just Audio" in Parkville said it would cost $275 for a repair. Took it to Jimmy and paid only $150. Now, I wouldn't trust "Just Audio" to repair a toaster. Seems they prey on the elderly and people who don't have a clue about vintage electronics. Jimmy rocks!

Yet another 5-star review here. Jimmy is a nice person and a true professional with vast experience. He diagnosed the problem with my speaker on the spot, provided a fair estimate, and I had it back the day he told me I would have it back. The speaker works like new now. We're lucky to have ESC here in Maryland. P.S. For what it's worth, my speaker is not vintage like some other reviewer's equipment.

Jimmy is a rare breed indeed. Great guy to work with. Knowledgeable technician, fair businessman. He completely restored my 40 yr old Marantz amplifier. The results exceed my every expectation. I then brought him a more modern, high tech piece of equipment, previously written off by two different techs. He repaired it spot on. Again, exceeded my expectations. I will qualify that I am not easy to please, and that I expect to get what I pay for. Overall, just a pleasure to do business with this shop, led by Jimmy. I would drive 2-3 hours any day of the week to bring my audio equipment here to be serviced or repaired. There aren't enough stars to post.

THIS IS THE BUSINESS TO GO TO FOR REPAIRS!!! My Vintage Yamaha Amplifier that I had for over 30 yrs stopped working. I chose Electronic Service Center base upon the reviews. Spoke with Jimmy, told him the problem I experienced with my amp. He recognized the make and model of my machine, over the phone, base on very few details. I felt at ease speaking with Jimmy, who is very knowledgeable and even educated me on some things that I did not know about my amplifier. I brought my Amp in for servicing and was extremely happy with the results. The turn around time and quality of service was more than efficient. The price was fair and reasonable. The reviews are so true. My amplifier sounds wonderful and is like BRAND NEW again! I am a very HAPPY CAMPER! THANK YOU!!!

Jimmy did a fantastic job bringing my old receiver back to life and gave me a lot of good advice. He is the go-to guy in this area for stereo repairs and maintenance and is a super nice fellow. Thanks Jimmy! Update August 2019: Jimmy did another great job on my old Marantz receiver. It was a tricky job but he brought it back to life and it sounds wonderful. Thanks again Jimmy!

Jimmy has repaired a number of vintage audio components for me over the past 6 months. His work is excellent. It is extremely rare these days to find an experienced knowledgeable expert who will take the time to explain exactly what needs to be done to resurrect an old receiver or turntable. I will continue to use his services in the future. For now, I am loving listening to quality music again. My highest recommendation.

Electronics Service Center certainly knows what they are doing and are great to work with! Jimmy is very knowledgeable and showed great expertise in servicing my vintage Marantz stereo receivers and tape deck, as well as my Carver CD player. I could not be more satisfied! I will always take my equipment there; they are the BEST!
