It’s always a pleasure visiting Bombay Beach Drive in. There’s so much Nostalgia in recycled art. The old cars add the extra needed detail in this art piece.

My aunt lived in Indio for decades and 'the Beach' was a quick 45-min drive. Been here several times, good way to spend the day and see some modern art but don't go in the summer months (Nov to March is perfect) Was easy to find old Mexican women selling burritos and tacos out of totes on various street corners. Great eatin' !! ?

Brilliant way to turn abandoned vehicles into art in a practical ghost town

Not just the drive in, Bombay Beach. We hadn't been out since December 2020 and just went back for Christmas. It's a very different place now, with a lithium mining operation on the shore just to the right of town, the water has receeded probably another 100 feet, a bunch of slab city type people living in vehicles on the beach, and RVs all over the place, I assume the mine employees. That will probably be our last visit, but I'm glad we had the time we were there from 2018-2020.

If you dig Americana, this is one of those stops. Don't forget to see the rest of the art on the beach!

Yep. Looks like a drive-in full of old cars and ferris wheel bucket seats.

This place is amazing and definitely worth visiting. It has the vibe of a surreal movie set, and it’s hard to believe that The Walking Dead wasn’t filmed here – it would fit perfectly! Overall, highly recommended – it’s really worth seeing.

The Bombay Beach Drive-In, plopped defiantly in the post-apocalyptic postcard known as Bombay Beach (on the shores of the ever-retreating, ever-toxic Salton Sea), is less of a nostalgic nod to classic Americana and more of a searing eulogy to it. It’s an art installation that asks, “What if Mad Max had a Pinterest board?” and then answers it with sun bleached vehicles, half melted movie screens, and an ambiance that says “drive-in” with the same sincerity a haunted doll says “hug me.” This is where you contemplate the slow decay of the American Dream, projected if at all on a screen surrounded by gutted cars so oxidized they’ve probably developed their own ecosystem. Half sculpture, half sociopolitical commentary, and entirely photogenic in that “my soul is melting but make it aesthetic” way, the Drive-In stands as one of the signature pieces of the Bombay Beach Biennale, an art festival so absurdly avant-garde it might actually loop back around to sincerity. Not worth the trip on its own, but if you’re out there might as well swing on by. In short, the Bombay Beach Drive-In is what happens when art, irony, and entropy all get drunk together in the desert, crash into a 1970s Buick, and decide, “Yeah. Let’s leave it here.” 10/10 Patinas of Postmodernism.

I stopped specifically to see this, especially since there's a wreck of an AMC Pacer in the drive-in. I'm a fan of AMC vehicles, having owned a Gremlin. A pleasant surprise was to see a '90s Ford Escort wagon, a car my brother has to this day. Others include a Nash Metropolitan, a VW Beetle and Microbus, even a Porsche 924, among others. An eclectic mix of vehicles. I heard they project movies here on the white trailer in front of the cars. That would be a fun time! Stop by if you're a fan of kooky car art.

This beach is a ‘must see’ if you’re in the Palm Springs area! If you’re visiting during summer months, be certain to take lots of water, sunscreen, and a hat as im sure it gets quite hot and with no tree cover, the elements would be harsh. There is a restaurant off the highway run by a friendly gentleman who has photographic proof that Anthony Bourdain ate there. Be prepared to see lots of interesting art along the sandy beach and just as much in the residential yards!

Imagine that a bunch of 1950s greasers went to a drive in, and then the soviets nuked the US desert and no one has been here since then. It was awesome.

It is certainly photogenic. The whole town is, if a bit deserted. Nothing in town by way of services except a small cafe. Private citizens have built these art installations on their own properties and some may rely on internet donations, although there is no fee posted. There was a tourist van stopped here the day I arrived so there may be paid tour services that include the Salton Sea area. It's a long drive from anywhere else, so plan a long day. I started at Joshua tree and ended up in Borrego Springs for the night.

I only wish I could have seen it at night, lit up. Of course, that means that I would have to be in Bombay beach at night....
