I love it! Went maybe around 8:30 am in January. Views are amazing! It's a little cold in the shade, but when those little ray of sunshines ? touch you it's great!

I never knew this hidden gem was here! What a lovely surprise to find lots of meandering trails, beautiful old oak trees, and fun interpretive signage. I will definitely be back!

I’m lamenting the closure of the hillside at Shell Ridge. I spoke to a volunteer who said the local neighborhood led a campaign to discourage visitors. Who knew local residents had the right to gate keep city property!! I completely understand the need to park and visit respectfully. I see the irony though that blocking off the Fossil Hill Trail lot and adjacent streets will just push visitors to either park on the busy Walnut Blvd that’s quite unsafe due to the high speeds of cars OR to the streets 4 blocks away. Is anyone a winner here? Posting a picture I took last year during the bloom. I went there on both weekdays and weekends during the blooming season and only witnessed joyful visitors enjoying the beauty. I was really excited to show my friends the blooms this year, but I guess we’ll be looking from afar. If anyone tells me that it’s just as beautiful from down below, you haven’t experienced the magic of wandering the little trails and being amongst the poppies. Shame on the locals who campaigned to take that away from respectful visitors.

Such a beautiful park for a hike. Great views of the SF Bay Area. So many flowers and birds.

Shell Ridge Open Space is one of my favorite spots in Walnut Creek! It offers a variety of hiking trails for all levels, from easy strolls to more challenging climbs. The rolling hills, scenic ridges, and stunning views make every hike enjoyable, especially at sunrise or sunset. One of the best things about Shell Ridge is the accessibility—there’s free parking along the road, and it’s easy to find a trail that suits your pace. It also feels very safe for solo hikes, which is a huge plus. The open landscape, beautiful wildflowers in the spring, and occasional wildlife sightings make it a peaceful escape from the city. Whether you’re looking for a short walk or a long adventure, Shell Ridge is a must-visit for nature lovers. Highly recommend!

Lots of good trails. Visited during the summer. Limited shade spots. Challenging but good work out. I have yet to visit the pool but looks like a nice set up. Parking closest to the pool gets full quickly but there is plenty of parking at the other lots. Bathrooms were well maintained.

Easy to moderate hikes with the majestic Mount Diablo in the background. Lush green in the rainy season, hot and dry during summer time. Beautiful year-around. Unique vegetation. Gorgeous oak trees. Vibrant and fascinating wildlife. Deer, turkies, hawks, kytes, great horned owls, barn owls, turkey vultures, acorn woodpeckers, rodents, rattlesnakes, gopher snakes, kingsnakes, tarantulas, coyotes, and yes, even mountain lions. And much more! :)

I saw this sign on social media, and now it is my life goal to come here, have a great time, and bring a ton of friends. If you rich dorks hadn’t tried to hide this from the common folk, I wouldn’t even have known, shame on you for trying to hoard a beautiful place. My goal is to tell one person a day every day for the next month about Shell Ridge and encourage them to visit.

Settled in the North West foothills of Mt Diablo this is a really nice place to go for a picnic or wander around the fire trails. Shade is sparse so dress accordingly and bring plenty of water. Parking is available in multiple paved lots and clean restrooms are available. A fair number of people can be found around the trails depending on time of day and pets are welcome to come along too. Photos are of both Spring 2022 arnd Fall of 2023.

Good open space if you are looking for a hike. There are great views of Mt. Diablo especially in the winter and spring after it rains.

Extensive trails to choose from. There’s a variety of difficulty in the different trails and they’re all beautiful! Plenary of branches to rest. The trails are beautiful and clean. Incredible views!

For some reason the Castro trail is not that refreshing or exciting. Don't get me wrong! It has great views and all the amenities of a typical local park like picnic area, restrooms, basketball courts etc. Also the parking at the trail entrance is minimum and might have to park in an overflow lot nearby.

Diverse area where one can bike, hike, run, and enjoy nature. It can be a bit brutal during the hot seasons but even during that time it has its charm. Well situated for good scenic views. A fine place to bring the family during the weekend to promote a love of our natural wonders. I’ve had the good pleasure of taking people here and they’ve not been disappointed!

Beautiful scenic multi use trail. Many routes to choose from depending how difficult you want the experience to be. Seems many locals frequent here so it can get busy at times. Bikes are not allowed on some areas but expect them to be there. Be cautious on the ridge trails as there are many weeds and plants that with poke and prod you since it's a naturally grown area.

Great hiking trails! Clean trails, dog friendly. 996 elevation gain to the top with beautiful views. The spring flowers are starting to pop up.

Great start for hiking Diablo Regional Park. No fee and small parking area. We'll kept with bathrooms and water.

Great hiking Trails, Good For Dogs and Mountain bikes. Rainy season will bring lots of mud, so be prepared. And be mindful of Horses in this area, as there are some equestrian centers nearby, and their riders are somewhat possessive of the trails.

Great dog hike but come prepared with water, bags, sunscreen and a hat! The trails are wide so there is plenty of room for the mountain bikers who whiz by with a quick wave. Your dogs will love it because they can go off-leash. Unfortunately during the summer months the middle of the day might make this a tough hike because there’s no shade to take a break. We went in April and it got a little hot!

A go to spot for mtb riding in my backyard. The park shares boundaries with Castle Rock, Diablo Foothills Regional Park and Mt. Diablo. In other words you can ride or hike a long way if you'd like. It's heavily used on weekends by walkers, hikers, equestrians and mtb riders. Weekdays it can be almost empty and is my favorite time to visit. Beautiful scenery with a mix of fire road, double and single track. Multiple creek crossings and steep climbs and descents are all available with awesome vistas. Single track trails are technically off limits to mtb riders but some have been riding those trails for years. Again, best visited on a weekday to feel like you have the park to yourself. Most hikers and walkers are within the 1st couple miles of parking lot. Nothing to technical to ride or hike unless you really know the area. Highly recommend for a 1-2hr ride if local.

Great trails with variety of hiking options and stunning views. It was covered with beautiful wildflowers, and the ridge was windy and cool although exposed to sun. Highly recommend it

Great trails to explore! Well maintained fire access lanes and smaller trails. Great loops for a 1-2 hour hikes. Good for hiking, running, biking.. You will also see the occasional person on a horse and cattle roaming the hills. Very picturesque open hills. Street parking in the neighborhood. No restrooms.

Large open space park reserve for long hikes on days with nice weather. Very scenic. For those with delicate hearts, be mindful of what trails you hike because some trails are quite steep. Consult a map of the open space before your intended hike, so you know what types of inclines and altitudes you'll encounter on your chosen trail.

One of my favorite places to hike. A wonderful mix of hills and valleys, not too high or steep, and so many different trail routes.

Beautiful hike through the foothills. Not too strenuous - though there are some steep declines/inclines. Wear shoes with good grip. Parking was plentiful on a weekday evening too!

One of the best trails in the Walnut Creek area! Lots of shade and there was a continuous slight breeze to keep us cool. We did the Indian Creek trail loop. It's 2 miles of awesome trails. This trail splits off into multiple great trails for all kinds of hikers! Highly recommend!

Shell Ridge is one of my favorite hidden treasures of this area. It has wooded areas combined with big open grassy spaces, and ponds when the weather allows! I love the off leash hiking areas, and every dog I've encountered on that trail has been well behaved and appropriate. There is also a good variety of terrain: it goes from flat to steep to everything in between throughout the trail, which makes for an extra good workout! Bonus: it's a fantastic location for pet photography!

Overall great place for a hike. There's quite a few different trails in the space, though not a lot of shade.
