Wonderful place to ski with kids. We did season passes for 25-26 and skied a dozen plus days, including all of the holiday weekends. No lift lines ever more than 3 or 4 chairs worth. Even MLK Sunday was not crowded. The snow was great — evidently they upgraded their groomers and it showed. The glade runs are incredible when there’s natural snow. The lift staff were friendly including helping my 5 year old get her ski back on after I knocked it off scrambling to the chair (surfer smile vibes). The cafeteria is fine and again it’s not crowded so you are not fighting for a table. For a DC-area family, being able to escape to a yesteryear (in a good way) mountain in less than 3 hours is amazing. We look forward to many more turns next year and beyond.

Stayed here again recently to go skiing at Canaan and Timberline and it did not disappoint. The room was clean and inviting. There are some things to know if you plan on going for the first time: 1. You will probably need a 4 wheel drive vehicle during the snowy winter season. But the drive off the main road is pretty easy even with thick snow. 2. When you arrive you may be greeted by members of the local deer community. They love to get free food, especially “Moochie”. He’s the local favorite. Just be careful if you do feed them. Wildlife don’t eat the same way we do! 3. Parking is close and you have easy access. 4. Amenities: They have a coffee shop open early for your convenience. And yes, the coffee was awesome! There is a pool, hot tub, game room, big nice conference rooms, gift shop, and I’m sure more that I missed. 5. There is a restaurant and bar/restaurant as well. Be patient as they may get backed up like any other food/drink facility. 6. Skiing/Snowboarding: I’m not experienced enough to go over details about this but here is our experience every time we are there: Decent wait times on the lift, nice staff to help when you need it, medical personnel available for when you try that ski trick you probably shouldn’t have, the bar and food is good. Love the outdoor fire pit. The rental area is pretty basic. They will help you and even make adjustments to equipment if needed. As for the slopes: I feel like this is a safe, good place to learn, experiment with, and develop skills. Finally the people: a LOT of nice people come here. They are helpful & friendly. There are always 1-2 people that don’t know how to be kind, but that’s anywhere. The view is amazing. And you will probably want to come back. So plan ahead. If you become a repeat visitor you will find your grove real quick. The resort is roomy and not complicated. Be kind and enjoy!

Smaller resort but they care about their slopes and clientele. The prices were competitive and fair for their size. Instructors were awesome. The staff friendly and hard working. We appreciate their military discount for the whole family

Attended the Mocrazy Strong event for TBI Survivors and Challenged Athletes of West Virginia assisted with adaptive skiing. Very important to make sure that you request an accessible room and be specific to what you require.

Lift broke down for an hour on our recent visit, and several of the slopes were icy and ungroomed. The infrastructure is old and at the end of it's life. It seems like management treats the ski slopes as an afterthought and doesnt really care.

The computers in the rental department are absolutely worthless! I had to get on two different computers to get my information in! I had my records in but the computers but it said they couldn’t find it! The lady there was no help as she just sat there!!! I wont be using their rentals ever again! I’ve been skiing here for 40 years! Not happy!!!

Canaan Valley Ski Resort is one of our favorite ski destinations within driving distance from the Washington DC area. It offers a pure ski experience without the crowds or long lift lines. The atmosphere is laid back, the slopes are enjoyable for all levels, and the mountain never feels rushed. Add the beautiful views across the valley, and it’s an easy place to relax and just enjoy skiing the way it should be.

No ciders no vodka very few selections on any drinks, no personality anymore fries changed menu is very lacking. Definitely gone down hill. We've been coming for years, used to my fave but guess we'll see if timberline can top it this year. Tried to get my ski fixed and the lady was sarcastic and couldn't help.

We visited the Canaan Valley ski area over MLK weekend (on Sunday, to be exact). It was not busy at all. We arrived around 11am and had no line for lift tickets or rentals. Our group was seven people, including three kids. The process to pick up rentals was quick. The longest part was filling out the forms, but while I completed them the rest of the group went ahead and got their gear with no wait. The slopes were well maintained, and because it wasn’t crowded, the kids had space to learn and get comfortable since it was their first time. They started with snowboarding and about an hour in switched to skiing, which was smoother and easier for them to pick up in the time we had there. Near closing (around 4:30pm), we noticed they were starting to make more snow. We will definitely be back next year during the same time for our annual snow adventure from NC!

Best family friendly ski resort. Always great snow & lots of trails to choose from. Very friendly & knowledgeable staff, plenty of parking.

Signed my children up for ski lessons and WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED . the Web portal was difficult for me but had an easy time over the phone getting set up. The ticket and rental process was frustrating- but the ski school staff were accommodating, friendly, and very good with children. We were freezing and they were patient and made our experience one we will always remember and cherish.

Went there with kids 7, 10, 12 yo. Great slopes, helpful staff at the reception. We were lucky and there wasn't a lot of people. But I won't go there again, unless they fix the way they operate lifts. The lifts are plain dangerous. There was no line indicating where skiers should stand to sit on a chair safely. The operator doesn't slow the benches down unless asked couple of times. For a kid there is simply not enogh time to sit/exit properly!! My 7 yo kid's head was half an inch away from approaching bench just because she (and I, first timer) didn't know where to stand. This lift is only suitable for tall adults with perfect coordination and advance skiing experience. It is not safe for kids and beginners at all! Dec 2025

We aren’t skiers. We came during the fall colors and wife took the Ski Lift up the mountain. I had to stay with the dog. Nice views on the 15 min up and 15 min back trip. Friendly staff. A bit of a walk from the lodge where tickets are bought up to the ski lift.

I had a really frustrating experience at Canaan Valley Ski resort this past weekend. The lines were ridiculously long, and it felt like we spent more time waiting on lift tickets and equipment rentals, than we did skiing. We got in line at open (9am) and we didn’t have our skis and poles in hand until 11:30am. It was disappointing to see so many people crammed into a small space with next to no organization. The staff seemed overwhelmed, which only added to the chaos. Our equipment staff member, Mary, was pulled away to help other staff members repeatedly, causing a substantial time delay in getting fitted for our skis. This was our first time going to this ski resort and I expected a much smoother experience for the price. It was definitely not the relaxing day on the slopes I was hoping for. I would not recommend this place during peak times unless they make major improvements to their system.

Here's a polished version of your review: We had a great experience at this family-friendly resort. While we did encounter minor issues, such as power outages and delays with room readiness, the staff went above and beyond to make things right. They proactively called us before our stay to inform us about the situation and offered several accommodations. Upon arrival, they even provided additional discounts for the inconvenience. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, making our stay relaxing and enjoyable. The ski and snowboard lessons were a highlight—my kids gained confidence and learned to snowboard without fear, thanks to the excellent instruction. The staff was consistently friendly, professional, and attentive, which added to the positive experience. Despite the initial hiccups, their commitment to customer service won us over, and we’re already looking forward to returning in the future!

This place is awesome! The room was clean and spacious and the hotel offered a lot of amenities. 2 arcade rooms, outdoor chill spots with fire pits, an ice skating rink, basketball court, tennis, golf, indoor pool etc. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The ski lodge was just as great, with an on-site restaurant, awesome food, and again the staff was amazing. Definitely visiting this place again.

Best location we visited on our trip to West Virginia. We only went to ride the ski lift to enjoy the early changing leaves this year. Ride was smooth and view was spectacular. 12.00 each for Seniors and 15.00 regular. It was not ski season so nothing else going on but worth visiting just to ride the lift when leaves are pretty.

We love the hike to Bald knob (about 2 mi with a fair amount of elevation), but it can be a little tricky to find the trailhead. Follow directions to Snow Tubing area on Google maps (there is a blue sign that says tube park on the road), then once you go up that road the trailhead is a gravel road on the right at the far end from the building and where snow tubing starts. I circled the trailhead sign in one of the attached photos. Alternatively if you come from the main ski lodge, when it's off season you can hike up the timber trail (the left most ski trail on the map in the parking lot). Once you get up to the actual peak (there is a sign pointing to your left up a steep slope), if you turn right instead on the big wide grass area, it's a nice hike. However, if it is wet out the trail can be very muddy and mucky. Eventually you'll see a trail on your right through the woods to the ski lift (marked with green blazes). If you're coming from the ski lift look for a small brown sign to the left of the small trail through the woods.

I was there in February. It wasn’t crowded. Lifts seems older, but I like trails . We had a good instructor. I love that you can ski to Parking lot. In some bigger ski resorts you need to remove ski and walk to Parking lot. I also like trees covered in snow on the top. Looks beautiful. Also we stay at the hotel nearby and it has outdoor ice skating rink. Saw deer during the day right next to parking lot of hotel. Deer were not afraid people or cars

Skiing was an experience. It was our first ever time. We did not take a class.. probably should have. My son took to it immediately, lucky him. I fell a TON. Husband and son really loved it so they will be back tomorrow most likely! The ski lift was scary to me, but I’m sure most people don’t mind it. I’m a chicken I guess lol It was a perfect snowy day! Snow blowers were still going, which made it so much more fun.

Highly recommend the scenic chairlift when the fall leaves are at peak color! The view of Canaan Valley at the top was amazing. There's also an overlook of Red Creek Valley - follow the sign for the Hang Gliding/Parachute Launch.

I have come to Canaan Valley Resort in the Winter and now in the Summer. In the Winter, there is an ice skating rink. In the Summer, the outdoor pool is open heated to a lovely 78 degrees with 3" to 5' 6" depths. Year round, there is also an indoor pool and good size hot tub. The pool was about 4'. The saunas were closed used for storage. Where you sign-in with the attendant, there were towels you could borrow. You could also get a key to the gym which has bicycles and treadmills. There are some lovely sitting areas in the lobby, on the deck, and outside in back of the hotel with wooden gliding chairs area the firepits. Rooms: All the hotel rooms have a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee maker with individual Wolfgang Puck round coffee filter packets. In the pictures (if you start a booking), the King has a sofa while the Queen only has a chair which is same for the Balcony versions. There is a Queen with Balcony room, but the Queen Junior suite does not have a balcony and has a parking lot, front of the resort view, but it has a sofa and minibar. We have splurged for the King Suite which has two rooms. A King bedroom with a balcony, desk, mini-fridge, microwave, individual cup coffee maker, and bathroom. The nice, big second room has a gas fireplace, sectional sofa that also is a pull-out bed for the kids or another guest, wooden eating table with four chairs pus an additional leaf in the closet, and a wet bar (sink, microwave, and another refrigerator), and desk. The room has a connecting door if you needed to book another bedroom. The living room wet bar has a full size coffee maker (each filter makes 3 - 4 cups). Black tea is provided for both the living room coffee maker and the individual coffee maker in the bedroom. Each room has separate climate controls which worked well, although I found the bedroom heating to be noisy. There is shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, hair dryer, and an iron/ironing board. Although I liked the pump soap by the sink, I thought the rest of the products were rather cheap. The soap was very drying and made my skin feel tight afterwards. Tip: You may want to bring your own bath products. Dining: Hickory Dining Room. 2nd floor in the middle building with a lovely view of the outdoor pool, golf course, mountains, and trees. You can get carry out but getting someone to answer the phone is a hit or miss. - Breakfast 7 am - 11 am - Good, hearty breakfasts - Lunch 11 am - 2 pm. Don't get the coleslaw. It tasted like the mass produced/bulk one and I couldn't eat it. - Dinner 5 pm - 9 pm Seasons Cafe for grab and go food, pizza, ice cream, milkshakes, Starbucks Friday - Thursday 5 pm - 9 pm Laurel Lounge for appetizers, pizza, wings, etc. Friday - Thursday 5 pm - 9 pm Activities: - Sometimes there are hikes - check on their website under Events - Golf - Scenic Chair Lift for $10 each way; 2 mile hike back otherwise - Sporting Clay shoots - Arcade / game room - 7:30 am - 10 pm Air hockey table, shooting games, and claw game. - Canaan Valley hikes near-by - maps at the front desk Nearby Points of Interest - In the Davis town, the WVHighland Artisan Gallery (487 William Ave, Davis, WV) is a wonderful place for affordable gifts made by local artists. It is closed on Tuesdays but open other days from 10:30 am - 5 pm. - There are several other stores, deli, and restaurant within that area. There are not many parking spaces though. Ignore the Town Hall Garage. It was an old garage and is not a parking garage. - Mountain State Brewing company - bar and can buy beers. Open 5 pm and later but may be earlier.. Also selling pizza earlier. - Farmers Market on Fridays 5 - 8 pm in the open lot area. Only 4 or 5 vendors when I was there, but there can be up to 20 depending. - Riverfront Wood Fired Pizza (290 State Hwy 32, Thomas, WV) - about 20 minutes away. Wonderful pizza! Spaghetti pizza is one of their specialties with delicious sliced meatballs! Indoor and outdoor (back of the building) seating - Blackwater Falls State Park

Canaan is an old-school place, although the recently did upgrade from the old wicket day tickets to a new RFID system. Their snowmaking is significantly worse than neighboring Timberline, but when the weather cooperates, it's one of the best places to ski in the mid-Atlantic. That said, they're usually nowhere close to having 100% of the runs open and the lifts are super slow. Prices at the cafeteria aren't terrible, but it's pretty common to see people tailgating in the parking lot. It has its faults, but I do like the place and the views from the top!

Our family decided to make a day trip and visit to ride the scenic Ski chair lift. We are so glad we decided to do this. It was such a fun family experience. We got to ride to the top seeing all the amazing views. Got to hike trails and take stunning photos it was an amazing time. We plan to visit again in the winter to do more activities! Loved the fall scenic chair lift such a great time.

Stunning fall foliage views from the chair lift in September. Be sure to check the weather, we had gorgeous, sunny skies on the way up, got off for 5 minutes and had torrential downpours, high winds hail, thunder and lightening ALL THE WAY BACK DOWN. It was terrifying. We had our 2 year old twin grandkids with us and I believe they're scarred for life! Unfortunately, I had just taught them the danger of lightening the week before we left. The BEFORE and AFTER pictures are hilarious. I'll try to find them.

Went on a Monday (Valentines Day) and the place was desolate. Got about 3-4 runs in before seeing another skier. At the height of the day, there were only 20-30 folks on the slopes. Trails aren’t well-maintained (compared to Timberline) and all of the trails past Weiss Meadows 1 were closed. They only had the Weiss Quad lift open but that was enough with the few people skiing. I never had to wait in line, just up and down the mountain all day. The lift is pretty slow, it pushes about 10 min, twice as much time compared to Timberlines new 6-man lift which will rocket you up the mountain in ~5 min. Thankfully, the day was redeemed by 4” of fresh powder from the night before and a $30 lift ticket due to Food Bank Mondays. Donate a non perishable food item and get a lift ticket for only $30! It’s truly a steal of a price!

My wife and I had a wonderful time here. I'd highly recommend. We visited on a Friday and Saturday. While Saturday was a bit busier, you really didn't feel it. We never waited long for the lifts, and there was always plenty of room coming down the runs. There was a long wait for lunch at the lounge, but they have a large cafeteria with food to purchase as well; this is what my wife and I opted to do. $30 for chicken strips, a cheese burger, 2 fries, 2 drinks. A bit pricey for what you get in my opinion, but not bad food. The staff was very nice as well.

We went there in the summer and it was still beautiful. Make sure you try the ski lift to the top. It's $8/person but it's worth it. Don't forget to wear your jacket though because it's awfully windy and freezing cold. This ski resort also offers ski beginner class. You can also rent ski equipments. They also have restaurant called Quencher, and they serve good food. They have a big outdoor amphitheater outside the restaurant where people play live music. A lot of people bring their dogs in the summer to watch the live band or just walk around the premises. I haven't tried the ski slope yet, but it looks very mild for advanced and beginner skiers.

Our family had a great time here for two days. There was no natural snow, but they make it. Half the family went snowboarding and had an excellent instructor while the other half went tubing with the kids. The first day we were disappointed we couldn't tube due to their system overbooking, but one of the young ladies at the front desk was able to get us in the next day to tube with a much smaller crowd (way better). The tubing area has a magic carpet which brings you & your tube up to the top of the tubing lanes. All in all, we had fun at both places. Afterwards, we went to the pub on site and enjoyed a few drinks (they have a full bar & craft beer) and picked on some food which was okay. All was surprisingly reasonably priced. The service could be better, at times I felt the young waiter was upset, but that may be because there were only two servers for the whole place.

Scenic chair lift ride to the top during summer. It’s a 15 minute ride to the top and we decided to walk down. It’s about a mile down on timber trail and not very strenuous. You can see where the hang gliders can take off. Beautiful views of the valley and trees. Friendly staff.
