What clients say about Black Bear Resort in Davis Creek (WV)

We escaped for a snowy last minute getaway in WV. We booked cabin 32 a couple days before we arrived. We found the cabin, warm, cosy and inviting. The kitchen and living area is big enough for two people but probably not for a small family. It was well stocked with a variety of kitchen essentials. Gas fireplace was lovely and so were the automatic candle lanterns. Overall, the surrounding areas were spectacular with stunning views. 10 minute drive to ski resorts & 10 minute drive to Davis. We would recommend 4WD but not essential as long as you are slow and patient for the plough + gritter. The best part was this place is very dog friendly! We would recommend and likely stay again.

Well....if you like not having water to fill the jacuzzi tub, to take a shower, or make a cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa. Then, by all means this is your place. The view is nice from the back deck.

Stayed in Cabin 29. Poorly maintained... Absolute dump. Toilet wasn't working (maintenance was kind enough to fix it). Washer was leaking badly. Dryer had towels that were clearly left in there wet (the smell was putrid). Floor sags. Couch is unusable, you sink into it. The shower was surrounded by mold / mildew. Told the front desk, they couldn't care less. Told us it was up to the individual owner. I had no way to contact the individual owner. I'll never stay here again.

We stayed in cabin 79. It was full of bugs and poorly maintained. The floors were uneven and sagging making it difficult to walk normally inside. The sheets had a musty/moldy smell and even though we paid a cleaning fee we were required to strip beds and start laundry. The only redeeming quality here was outside the cabin. The resort was decently maintained and the location was convenient to services.

If you go to Black Bear Resort I hope you have a wonderful time! But if you have to cancel it must be 14 days - 2 weeks - before your RSVP. No exemptions. You will lose all your money as we did. My wife has lung cancer and this was going to be our very much abbreviated 40th anniversary trip, but her health was not up to it. They have a VER LONG LIST of expectations and policy that you should read first, as we should have. Our mistake, I understand that. But we paid for 3 nights in full and they made no effort to acknowledge our difficult situation. BEWARE!

I made reservations, but I got sick right before my visit. I called and requested a refund because I was sick and traveling out of state. They did not provide a refund (or a voucher), and I was not able to speak with a manager. Poor customer service; there were no alternatives or accommodations recommended, just "You have to forfeit your money." I recommend booking with the Canaan Valley Resort instead--even though they are more expensive.

Been going here every year with my family, never disappointed. Super cute cabins, with all the essentials. Very cozy and perfect for our ski trips.

When you walk into the main lobby of this "resort" the first thing you notice is the huge fireplace in a main gathering are. Being that said fireplace had no fire going, or even some candles lit if the fireplace had fallen out of code, to welcome visitors on a completely booked weekend the first red flag immediately popped up. My impression was that the people working that day have given up on their jobs, no longer care about ambiance, and have tossed customer service out the window. When we got to our cabin, I was pleasantly surprised to the cleanliness. It was "cozy" for the first twenty minutes of our stay. Having read some review about BBR, I was worried. Boxes of fireplace logs left by the previous owners were still bunched in a corner but mistakes happen. We all make them. While BBR may have a cleaning staff it appears they do not employ a maintenance staff. I have never stayed in a vacation rental that was in such desperate need of caulk, remote batteries, and Bullseye paint. Wow. The owners of Cabin 79 must not care, AT ALL, about the experience the customer has who rents their cabin. This was further evidenced by the quality of the mattresses in the cabin. My wife and I left after one night of a supposed three night stay. I am over fifty and quality of sleep is important to my overall well being, especially if that well being involves being active and skiing. The owners of Cabin 79 at Black Bear Resort should be ashamed of themselves for making their renters sleep on such old, sunken-in, destroyed mattresses. If you are under 40 and don't have any lower-back issues, you can probably get by no problem. My wife is 40 and she couldn't sleep well either and she has fewer physical problems to worry about than myself. Then there was the TV. Terrible viewing issues due to screen deterioration. Modern TVs are very inexpensive. Spend 200 bucks and get a new one for your customers! Use the money you made off our shortened stay to buy a TV for anyone willing to suffer through a "vacation" in your cabin. A vacation should be spending money to go to a place that is at least a touch better than your home. What my wife and I experienced at Cabin 79 was a major downgrade and I wouldn't want anyone else to lose money by having to get out of a horrible situation early. I have a few other minor issues that ruffled some feathers but it is time to put Cabin 79 and Black Bear Resort in the past, which will be difficult since we just got the credit card statement with our three-night stay. This place is not worth the risk. Visit Davis another weekend or go to Snowshoes or Wisp if this place is all that is avaliable.

Booked unit 9 based off photos provided by black bear resort site only to arrive to a totally disgusting unit. It was filthy and in disrepair. The unit was nothing close to the photos posted. The owner of the property should be ashamed to provide such a property and the black bear resort should be ashamed to offer such. Since we arrived after dark and after hours we suffered though a miserable and stressful night only to go the office when they opened the next morning to hear there was nothing they could do. We packed and left out that morning. The sad thing is this resort has potential but the stands set and held by the management is pitiful and until such time as they increase minimum standards and hold owners to minimums it will be sub standard.

I had an average stay at Black Bear Resort. The location was ideal, just a short drive from area attractions and the towns of Thomas and Davis. The property offers a large lodge with games and a library, there's also mini golf. A beautiful view of the mountains is a great backdrop for the pool, even though the pool was closed all year. The room itself was honestly the least pleasant part of the stay. While the in-room jacuzzi was a nice touch, it took quite a while to fill. Additionally, the AC had some technical issues, with very little air moving and very little cold being added. I didn't mind the room being dated, as it fits the vibe. I appreciate the microwave and fridge, but was not really a fan of the bed. Despite these inconveniences, the room was generally quiet and peaceful. We met some neighbors that were also from our state and had a fun evening of dinner and drinks in town. We also really enjoyed the free concert that the neighboring horse farm had on Saturday night! The price point was reasonable, considering the location and amenities. Overall, Black Bear is a good choice for those seeking a convenient place to stay in the area. But I think "resort" is a bit of a stretch for the name. I also would recommend the office inspect the individual rooms/cabins to ensure everyone is getting the comfort they expect during their stay. The staff was aware that the AC unit in our room had previous issues, yet we were still experiencing the same during our stay.

Overall this was a great place to stay at. I stayed at the Inn, so I'm not sure if they are privately owned like the cabins, but the room was really nice. The location was perfect as only a few minutes from where I needed to be to attend a wedding and only 10 minutes from Davis. While the water was nice and hot. The water pressure was lacking and the shower was a much slower process. Filling up the jacuzzi took 40 minutes. So just be aware, but it is a great addition to have in your room and you will use it! One thing that needs upgraded, was the TV. It have a bunch of lines constantly scrolling through the background of whatever you were watching. Some shows wasn't noticeable and others, it stood out big time. Every channel, but channel 6 worked on my TV. Unfortunately I didn't get to watch a few games on two nights I had hoped to watch cause that channel wasn't working. I paid $150 per night for three nights, total came out to over $600 after taxes and other fees they charge. Wasn't a deal breaker as the location was perfect for what I needed, but just be aware of it. It was very peaceful and had no noise problems at all. AC and heat both worked as needed. The rooms do come with a lot and overall they were really nice to stay and relax in.

My husband and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary here and it was absolutely amazing! Very friendly staff who didn’t bother you and the cabin (20B) was so clean and welcoming. The jacuzzi was great and our neighbors (horses) were the highlight of our trip. Will definitely be back!

Beautiful spot central to all things Davis/Thomas/Canaan Valley. I love that you are 10 minutes to Davis or 10 minutes to Timberline/Canaan Valley/White Grass for skiing. You definitely need a four-wheel-drive in the snow. You are close to Dolly Sods and Seneca Rocks for summer adventures. The main lodge is cute and open during normal business hours. Each cabin has their own unique feel- Definitely check out all the different cabins online to see which one is the right fit for you.

Stayed here 3 times, and each time has been a great experience. Big, comfy beds, plenty of options for coffee, fireplace, full kitchens, jacuzzi tubs. 10 minutes from Timberline and Canaan Valley, and 6 minutes from town.

I made online reservations for February weekend at the price posted on their webpage. My reservation was accepted and acknowledged. The next day I received an email informing me the prices online were incorrect. In fact, the price/night was double what they posted on their website! They acknowledge their error and only offered to refund the money. In my my, a comp was in order as it totally canceled my weekend away and not our fault that they couldn't administer their website.

Stayed in Cabin 5 over President's Day weekend with my family. Location is beautiful. The cabins are individually owed. Our cabin clearly needed updating and a deep cleaning. Cobwebs were everywhere and the shower curtain had mold on it. Bedding should be updated as well as the couch. If you are paying a high price for your stay the inside of it should represent it.

2 stars is because the resort is in a really good location for exploring the area. Beware what cabin you rent. All are individually owned and the resort does not seem to have a standard that they must be kept to. We rented cabin 9. It was badly in need of renovation. Smells like mold / mildew, terrible bed mattress, uncomfortable furniture, stove top falling apart, drywall peeling in places, slow internet and ultra grainy cable TV. We felt more sick the longer we we were there. We left 2 days early and immediately felt better. The resort has a lot of potential, but the cabin quality is a gamble.

Spent our anniversary weekend “On Mountain Time” unit 76 and it was awesome. This is a newly renovated unit and it didn’t disappoint. Kitchen was perfectly stocked and the beds were very comfortable. I recommend this unit if you’re looking for a mountain vacation. We can’t wait to go back. 10 out of 10.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay at Black Bear Resort. The cabin/house was large and clean with a fireplace, large deck, jacuzzi tub, and a lot of other amenities. It's also well located just a few miles from Davis, Thomas, Black Water Falls, and Canaan Valley. We'll definitely be back soon.

5 Star Review for our early Spring 2023 get-away in cabin 20B. Our cabin was beautiful, clean, cozy and comfortable. All amenities in the cabin were great. No problems with checking in or out. Desk service was friendly and knowledgeable. Kids enjoyed fishing... caught a few sunfish at the ponds. Bring your own bait and matches. Weather was a bit snowy, common for the time of year in this area, recommend 4 wheel drive. Roads were cleared and passable with no problems. Scenery was beautiful, esp Blackwater Falls. Our cabin was next to a beautiful horse farm. We saw many deer and wild turkeys. Campground was quiet and relaxing. Recommend dining locally at Hellbender Burritos, excellent food. Do not waste your time at Mama Mias Restaurant, slow and surprisingly expensive. Overall trip was great, traveling from PA. We will def be back again.

Do not book here unless you want them to cancel your room on you, without any notification, and then confirm your booking when you call anyhow, leaving you stranded in the middle of a snowstorm. Here’s my experience I was extraordinarily dismayed and upset to find that when I arrived on Friday night with my wife and sleeping toddler for this confirmed stay, there was no key, and I was told by the maintenance person (the only person who could be reached) that the room had been given away to someone else. This was particularly shocking because two days earlier to confirm my stay, gave my name, and the person working at your desk said that yes, I had cabin 94. I thought this was strange because I had cabin 77 on the registration, but your form indicates cabins may be switched. I told her I would be arriving after hours and when we did I followed her instructions, only to find no envelope with my name or cabin number. We were forced frantically to find another room for the night to avoid a 3.5 hour drive back home (it was 10 pm by this point) during a snowstorm. Fortunately we were able to find a room at another motel but only for one night. When I returned the next day to talk to someone at your front desk, she informed me that our room had been canceled in January. To be extremely clear, neither my wife nor I canceled our room. Nor did we receive any notification of the cancellation at the time that this happened, in any way, though they had my phone and email. The person working the desk also said that the room I was told I had when I called two days before check in was for another person with my same first (but not last) name, but clearly not me. Nevertheless, this staff member insisted we cancel the reservation, which we clearly did not do as we showed up at 10 pm for the room. So to recap, Black Bear resort canceled my room reservation when (I presume) someone else called to cancel their room, provided no notification of the cancellation, then this past week confirmed to me over the phone that I had a reserved room on the dates designated, and left me stranded in the snow with my wife and almost 2 year old struggling to find a warm place to stay the night. When I pointed this exceedingly unacceptable, unprofessional, and frankly almost unbelievable behavior (except that I have the receipts) to the staff, they said there was nothing they could do, not even fully refund the cancellation fee for a cancellation we did not request or want. They have ignored repeated emails and phone calls. Do not stay here unless your idea of a good time is to be stranded in your car during a snowstorm because they gave away your reservation, then confirm your non existent room anyways, and then ignored all requests for a remedy.

My husband and I stayed in cabin 20B,and we were completely amazed. The woman working at the office was so sweet and so helpful. It was our first time and she made sure to let us know about everything. The cabin was absolutely beautiful. Absolutely no complaints, nothing but 5 stars the whole time.We will definitely be going back,3 days went so fast,it was worth it the whole time.(:.

The room was clean and comfortable. Service during the check-in process was friendly. The facility was quiet and peaceful even with other guests present (a plus for the atmosphere of the environment (additional points for having quiet hours posted AND being a dark-sky community)). The only negative I can think of is (try not to laugh) the toilet was too small. Highly recommend staying here.

My family and I recently stayed at this resort cabin 93. The home is beautiful and minutes away from activity. The only problem we had was that the home was extremely dusty, the sheets were not properly cleaned, and the grill had what looked like a rats nest in it. We drove 18 hours to get there and instead of settling in we had to clean the house and wash all of the sheets since they smelled like sweat. The host Grace was friendly at first then it all changed when she was told how the home was received and that I had taken photos so she can see and speak with her staff. I’ve never had negative experience with a host/owner before but since then she has been very rude!! But like I previously mentioned the home and location is beautiful but the cleanliness of the home needs a lot of work and staff needs improvement on hospitality and customer service!

My oldest son went to Cross Country Camp, this part week held at the Black Beat Resort in Canaan Valley, and it was fantastic. It was the first time my wife and I had ever visited this resort and I can honestly tell you that we will be returning. We actually did not have the privilege to stay at the resort, we were only there on drop off day for the camp and family pic-up day, but my oldest sun got to enjoy the resort all week and he said that it was wonderful. There are plenty of adventures to be had around the area of the resort, I posted just a few of the pictures we took. So if you have never been to the area before and enjoy the outdoors half as much as we do I highly suggest that you go check it out for yourself.

We had the only cabin that our grill was chained to a tree in the driveway. Every other one had a nice big grill on the deck.. They wouldn't let us move it and that's how we planned on cooking. Irritating..The website description said jacuzzi...I assumed jacuzzi hottub...it was a jacuzzi bath tub. All in all it ended up being okay. The view is beautiful and I guess if you plan on skiing, hiking etc, it would be a nice place. We have a toddler and thank God I prepared to toddler proof the cabin. There wasn't much for us to do bc of the weather and having a toddler. We made the best of the weekend but definitely will not be returning. I should have done more research before booking this place. Also there were no inside pictures of the cabin and had there been we would not have stayed here. It was clean and nice to have a full kitchen and washer and dryer but definitely not what we were expecting. Oh and we had a 15inch TV. ?

We stayed at black bear resort January 2021. We spent two nights in cabin #39. It was cozy and clean. The resort is minutes from both Canaan and timberline. The staff was really kind and helpful. The entire process was very easy. Don’t be discouraged by negative reviews about this not being a hotel. For our weekend stay we had plenty of toiletries and towels. You are responsible for laundering the provided towels and stripping your sheets when leaving. There is a simple check list to complete before you go. We plan on using black bear in the future.

This is a beautiful area and the large cabin that we stayed in was not only beautiful but very spacious. Ski resort area in winter and the view from the top of the slopes is spectacular. Very close to black water falls, a Must see if you are in area. Very close to Davis, West Virginia for supplies. Horse back riding available at reasonable prices. Don't pass this area by without a stay.

We are vacationing in cabin #70. Extremely friendly and easy to work with staff. My young children love the pool. It seems huge and the scenery is beautiful! Mini golf is free and super fun, but not maintained extremely well...same with tennis courts. Maintenance men responds very quickly, but the fact that we needed the maintenance guys speaks for itself.

This is our tenth years coming here. We always love it. The cabins are fantastic and well equipped. The pool and facilities are always well maintained. The staff and other guests are always a blast. The surrounding area had plenty of things to do such as hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and enjoying nature.
