My daughter (a CNU student) brought her Sentra to Terry’s after several other shops either couldn’t diagnose the issue or simply refused to take it on. Determined to help her “independize,” I encouraged her to handle the entire process herself — from the initial conversations to the financing — while I kept a watchful eye from the sidelines.
From the very first call, Bob made both of us feel like family. He treated my daughter with patience, kindness, and total transparency — explaining every step in plain English, never talking down to her, and genuinely making sure she understood what was happening. When the first few replacement transmissions didn’t work out (the model year turned out to be notoriously finicky), Bob never gave up. He insisted on getting it right, worked tirelessly to make sure she was safe on the road, and even called her several times afterward to check in and ensure everything was running smoothly.
Behind the scenes, Bob kept me in the loop on the more technical details, always communicating clearly, honestly, and proactively. It was obvious that his concern wasn’t just about completing a repair — it was about doing right by his customers.

Did a walk-in here for an oil change and got my car back within 15 minutes, I've also had my car inspected in the past and the inspection seemed very honest, and the parts I needed to replace were fairly priced. This place is great and I would go again :)
The owner, Bob, took care of me and the car. I had been to 2 different auto shops and got scammed and screwed constintantly. One being casey vw in newport news, 2 being cofer auto,. When I finally came here he gave me a great rate for all the work he did that I was quoted elsewhere for way more. I will be recommending to come here and will be going myself. They are off of warwick Boulevard.
I have been taking my car here for years; they are my go-to mechanic. Bob and his son Rob are efficient, communicative, and honest. They alway make time to fit me into their schedule and the repairs are done in a timely fashion. Amazing customer service and incredibly fair.

Terry's has been my go-to mechanic for years. Bob, the owner, has always dealt honorably with me and others over the years and runs a good business that is a part of many local lives. I recently needed a transmission for my SUV and was in a bit of a bind. I had my SUV back about 36 hours after dropping it off. My vehicle drives better now than the day I bought it new from the lot. I recommend this business.

Bob (the owner) and his team at Terry's Transmission are great! First, this business was highly recommended by a neighbor even though it is not near our houses. When I called to make an appointment, Terry's Transmission got me in right away. Then, when I mentioned to Bob who recommended them, Bob immediately spoke highly of both my neighbor and his wife...talk about a great business owner, when they know their customers by name!
Anyway, Bob not only helped me, but he also advised against repairs that another mechanic recommended because he thought they were a waste of money. I was very impressed by him and his honesty and am happy to recommend him to others. He will be our family's mechanic from here on out!
I have been dealing with Terry’s for years, and have always had a good experience. They are honest, reasonable and always do a good job. Also, they are really nice people!
I went to Terry's to have an estimate done for a noise that occasionally occurs when the A/C is on and also a gerneeral inspection cause I'm going on a long trip with the car. Bob's guys check out the car and found it to be road worthy for a long trip but couldn't replicate the noise that I hear from time to time. He was honest and said he didn't feel comfortable replacing an AC compressor with no guarantee of a fix sense the noise didn't happen therefore a true diagnostic couldn't happen. He said sense they couldn't found an issue, the inspection (not state inspection by the way) was free. It seems to be an honest shop and I respect there insight. Thanks Bob.
My experiences with Terry's Transmission are Very Good ones. We have had both of Our vehicles serviced there. The repairs are done Very Well and the Respect given to Us by the staff is Excellent. We have and will continue to recommend Terry's to others.
Excellent work, Terry's Transmission has replaced a Transmission in my husband vehicle and it runs smoothly. The cost was a lot less then what others wanted to charge. We are grateful for there service. The staff are respectful and very helpful. We can call them and Bob will allow us to bring in our vehicle the same day. If it's going to take some time we leave it with them and most of the time before the day is out he gives us a call and the problem is solved. We have taken our vehicles on several occasions and each time great service. We want to thank Bob and he's staff for all their hard work and willingness to help so quickly. We will continue to take our vehicles to Terry's and we have told others about their Excellent work.
State inspection fraud. Took my vehicle to have some work done and requested the state inspection be done. They tell me I needed a wheel bearing in order to pass state inspection. The estimate they gave me was more than what I thought the cost should be. So I decided to take the car to a different shop and that shop tells me there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of my wheel bearings. This issue has now been reported to the state police. Highly recommend to avoid this shop.
I went there to get my car inspected 2 days before it expired and the owner Bob took me right in. I was done within 30 minutes, I needed back brakes and they took care of that the next day, again was out within 30 minutes. The staff there are awesome. I would highly recommend this place for your car needs.
Fantastic service at Terry's!! My vehicle needed a new transmission, and after doing my research, I settled on Terry's. I was glad I did. Fair price, responsive, and excellent service! Bob runs a great operation, making sure customers get the help they need in a timely manner.
I found Terry's for the transmission job, but they do other repairs, too. They just fixed my AC, performing a service and replacing the compressor. They got it done early, for a competitive price.

I havent reached out to this shop since receiving my car. I havent given them the chance to make this right, they may have been able to, but I have moved to the west coast since then. I am just leaving an honest review of their initial work done
I had brought in a 06 subaru impreza for a new clutch and cv axles. I explained I needed driver side cv and if parts are available, I asked for both axles to be done. they only did the passenger axle and clutch which left me with an obviously still clicky and nearly failing driver side cv axle. I was hoping both wouldve been done as it reduces labor costs on my end since they needed to come out to access transmission anyways. I had later brought the car back to get the driver side axle replaced. all is well except I noticed a new noise after the repair. I didnt drive the vehicle much, trailered the car to the west coast. didnt take more than a couple hundred miles before my clutch pedal went all the way to the floor with no return. come to find out they didnt bolt down the clutch slave cylinder after removing for transmission access. one bolt on the ground, the remaining bolt was maybe a quarter turned in. could've been a huge safety concern if I wasnt just trying to start the car. had to replace the slave cylinder on my own dime. upon further inspection on their repairs, it appears they impact wheel nuts on. I had to also replace two wheel studs after they mangled the threads. most of their work done was solid, but if I'm going to pay a shop thousands of dollars on a vehicle that I have been trying really hard to bring back to life, I expect more attention to detail. I would highly recommend inspecting their work when you get your vehicle back. soon I'll diagnose the new noise that has only appeared after they replaced the driver side cv axle. if its more sloppy work, I'll put in another review
Best place to get car repairs in my opinion. Amazing work, the staff is great and the owner Bob even stayed late to let me pick my car up after closing time. Prices and just as good, they won't overcharge and they do much more that transmission repair
This place is the most HONEST car repair shop ever! If you have a car that your trying to keep on the road this is the place. Bob kept my old Sunfire on the road for years. He kept my sisters old car on the road and Now I have my Nephew and husband taking their vehicles to him. Bob is honest and truthful about what is worth and not worth being done. Excellent work!!!!
I've been going to Terry's Transmission for a couple of years now. They are very friendly and clean. They explain things in plain English so you can understand if your not savvy in car talk. They are reasonable and have always been there when I needed them.
Today was my first experience in Terry's Transmission and will in no way be my last! The customer service was so great I've already text most of my friends that they need to bring their cars to Terry's. The place is clean and nice to wait in, and I didn't feel uncomfortable or like they didn't listen to my needs. 100% will be back!! Thank you!
Terry's did a great job replacing my engine after it got water damage. They were upfront about the timeline and actually delivered exactly when they said they would, which I really appreciated. The car runs great now, and the whole process felt honest and professional. Definitely recommend them if you need major engine work or repairs done right.
Just had a transmission replaced in a Suburban. When I first went there last week, they looked at my vehicle right away and informed me what was wrong. Bob the owner, explained and showed me on another transmission what was wrong with mine. He then informed me why they use the transmission company they do. Bob was very friendly and down to earth. There was no pressure and he was upfront about the cost. When I told him I wanted them to replace the transmission, he ordered it right then and setup a time for me to bring my vehicle in to have the work done. While I was there the first day and today, I watched Bob interact with other customers. Every custom was treated like a friend. I understand why people take their vehicles here for service and repairs.

Had an issue with my older 4runner. Bob and his crew did a fantastic job diagnosing and treating the issue. He was welcoming, knowledgeable, and gave me constant updates along the way. His prices were very fair and in the end the vehicle was fixed and runs great. 10/10 recommend this shop for all your needs!
Terrys is a Is a great choice for your auto repairs and servives. The owner Bob is as Friendly and down to earth as you can get. My wife won't take her car no place else. What makes this place good is that Bob's customers will return.
Our experience at Terry’s was great. We were given all the available options to deal with our transmission situation and time to decide. Never felt pressured. Once we made our mind up they handled the entire process for us and got the repair done in a timely manner given the scope of the repair. They were very professional and really nice to deal with.

After dealing with what I can only describe as an absolute nightmare situation with another shop, the owner Bob made sure I was taken care of. Extremely Disappointed with Service and Integrity
In December i entrusted Terry Transmission on Warwick Blvd in Newport News, VA, with my 2019 Lincoln MKC to have the transmission replaced. Initially, the car seemed fine, but issues arose shortly after. By February 2024, my vehicle started leaking transmission fluid significantly after a long trip. Despite multiple visits back to Terry Transmission to address the leaks, the problem persisted and even worsened.
Each time, the staff claimed to fix the issue, and on my fourth visit, they informed me that another transmission would need to be ordered and installed under warranty. Despite these assurances and a $700 charge for supposed warranty work (totaling $4850 in repairs), my car continued to leak the very next day. Upon inspection, it became clear that the "new" transmission was actually the old one, with sealant applied in an attempt to cover the leaks.
I am deeply hurt and disappointed by the lack of honesty and professionalism from Terry Transmission. Their failure to properly repair my vehicle after multiple attempts and substantial payment has led me to take legal action. I trusted them to do their job with integrity, and they let me down. I am now pursuing this matter through small claims court to hold them accountable. I strongly advise others to consider my experience before choosing this business for their automotive needs.
Best auto service by the best people. I had my wife's engine replaced and am very satisfied with the results. Recommend giving Bob a call for knowledgeable advice on your repair needs.
