I visited the grounds on an early Sunday morning and came away quite enchanted. It was huge! It was well staffed! It was beautiful. All around well done and one of my favorite of the old surviving Virginia plantations. You park and go thru a very small museum to pay your dues. Then across a neat bridge over a ginormous gully to the gift shop and a beautiful walk to the house. The house tour (self audio) was quite cool. The grounds were just awesome. Lots of outbuildings well maintained. It was like a mini Colonial Williamsburg in all the depth and information. I could have spent a day there. Later, I decided to drive the other side and stumbled upon a whole new unexpected world. Lots of cabins that could be rented, a restaurant that seemed closed for the winter and then a windy drive to the river where people were searching and finding fossil shark teeth. One showed me his treasures. They weren't gigantic, but you could definitely tell they were shark teeth. Finally before leaving the river front was a old gristmill which alone would have been worth the trip. Anyone near the area should add it to their list and if you have guests around, make it an activity on your "visitor's list".

We had a very enjoyable time here. We are traveling to the VA250 locations and found Robert E Lee's birthplace. I have lived in Virginia for a while now and didn't realize it was so close! The entrance has a museum of different items of the people that lives there. Including a wedding ring that was lost at the beach and later found! There is a very informative little booklet with each of items in the cases to point out neat facts and information. There is even an old Casio watch in a case and I found that kind of hilarious with all of the ve y old artifacts they have a watch from the 80s. ? The grounds are very well maintained, even in winter. As you walk around you will see fallen black walnuts and other thingsnyou don't normally get to see. Peer into the burial chamber, that was interesting too. Looks like a hole that people are just dropped into, but we found out there is stairs to below. The big house is just that, big! The rooms are laid out how they were thought to be originally. They have a walking tour that you can use your phone for. Adds some depth to just a normal tour. Highly recommend! Very neat and very informative place!

Great place to visit to learn more about the history of the US. You do a self guided tour using your phone and there are docents to answer questions. Very nice gift shop. Rustic cabins are available to stay in on the property. There is also an area where one can hunt for fossils by the water. Westmoreland state park is next door.

A magnificent place to indulge in nature and history! Im a big fan of their fossil excursions. Im new to fossil hunting but their guides are wonderful. Ryan in particular! He was very helpful and took the time to help me spot shark teeth and other cool fossils! I appreciated his patience, knowledge and sincerity. He even helped find a Croc tooth for me!! I can't thank him enough for his help! Richard and Monica (guides) are super informative as well! Overall if youre a fossil nerd then this is the place you want to be ❤️

The staff was very kind and helpful. My mother was on a scooter and they showed us the best route to see the most places . The place was clean and very spacious. Very pretty area. Lots to see.

Very pretty grounds immediately around the visitor center, house and gardens. However the many trails that are advertised on their website (and trail map they give you at the welcome center) are NOT maintained and are non-traversable. We came there to hike a loop trail from the house to the beach and back!! Yeah, that's was not going to happen. Very disappointing. Even the "beach" (and I purposely put that in quotes) was not maintained and very tiny. Not that we were looking for a real beach, but there was barely enough room to look for little beach treasures (stones, shells). And we were not there at high tide! Is it worth $11? I guess as a donation, but for 4 people who wanted to take a hike, No!

This historical home is a treasure. It has been beautifully preserved and well maintained. It is an outstanding example of Georgian architecture; the clusters of chimneys on either side of the house are an unusual feature. The outbuildings and grounds are immaculate. It's interesting to visit a landmark whose owners/family were so prominent in American history, including several who served in the Virginia House of Burgesses and signed the Declaration of Independence. Visitors use a self guided audio tour to glean information about this incredible home, it's inhabitants, and life in general during the 18th century. I enjoyed stepping back in time on a lovely Saturday afternoon.

Worth the drive! The Stratford Hall house and grounds are expansive and beautiful. The house is in very good condition and has been carefully restored. So many birds and flowers and peaceful trails and roads for walking. There are several cabins for overnight lodging. It seemed like we were stepping back in time. Bring a picnic lunch and some cold drinks, perfect for a day trip. The historic museum and gift shop are also really great. It has a self-guided audio tour, bring ear buds or headphones for your phone.

A wonderful place to visit. Virginia and American history. To see it all plan on multiple days or multiple visits. I personally have been there 20+ times and I still haven't seen the whole 2000 acres. Leave time for the overlook and the beach.

This place is awesome. They really restored this place. However it is difficult to find your way around as there is little in the way of signage and what they do have is difficult to follow. We were told that the director doesn't like signs. If it was easier to find your way around outside I would probably recommend it. As it is now, we went the wrong way several times. Frustrating!!!

With experience interpreters, guides, authentic "period" settings and architecture, a long visit to Stratford Hall immerses visitors in the daily life of pre-revolutionary figures and their ancestry. Fascinating and revealing.

Great time exploring the property. The house is in great condition. Hiking trails are available.

A day of history is always a learning experience and lots of fun. I miss the guided tours but the electronic media provides a lot of detailed information. Signage improvements would make it easier to find the mansion after exiting the visitor center, for entering and exiting the mansion, as well as figuring out which room to go to next. Maps would definitely help if you're planning to go to the waterfront.

My wife and I stayed the night at the Astor house and had the Valentine's dinner here. We explored the grounds around the main house and they were beautiful. I put off exploring because when I usually come here I come for the beach and fossils but I finally got around to exploring the well maintained lands of this historic site. I would highly recommend a visit as the staff were super attentive and everything about our stay was perfect. Super clean rooms and amenities and the food provided by Densons Farm to Table was to die for. Again highly recommend a stay and/visit.

Very interesting window into life in colonial Virginia across several generations of the gentry while also providing insights into the plight of the slaves and indentured servants on the plantations of the time. Excellent audio tour, nice grounds to explore and a decent beach area where you can also find fossils and shark teeth.

The history of the grounds is amazing. Great audio guide. The welcome center is really informative. There is no restaurant on the grounds, snacks in gift shop. We were there for over 3 hours.

The birthplace of Robert E. Lee, it is a well maintained and restored historic home. The self guided audio tour was engaging for myself and kids of multiple ages. The volunteers are very friendly and the grounds are beautiful.

Wonderful tour of the Lee family home. Staff was helpful, technology was efficient and thorough, gave many details of life at Stratford Hall. Three different types of tours were available, excited to return for another, or possibly one of their special events.

This outstanding 1700's era plantation house with outbuildings was the birth place of Robert E. Lee. Wonderfully restored, we visited just as they were opening back up after the Covid-19 lockdown, but the staff was great. With no in person tours allowed, we found the self guided audio tour to be a great substitute, and in some ways better than a guided tour. Highly recommended for anyone interested in this time period or history in general. Also, take the time to visit the cliffs (photo below). A great view and easy to reach.

Location is beautiful and massive. I chose to do my own tour using a headset. The bad part is that the house and grounds are far away from the entrance building. I'm disabled and there was no handicapped accessible options (such as someone taking you to the house and grounds in a golf cart or letting you drive to the house). Then when I finally got to the house, my headset would only work with about 1/3 of the positions. There was no staff there for me to switch out a headset. Someone needs to be at the house with replacement headsets. When I returned to the entrance building, I informed them of the defective headset. She just said, "Ok," and tossed it to the side. I believe an apology and maybe a partial refund or at least a coupon for a percentage off at the gift shop would have been appropriate.

Great property for a family excursion. Even has a working Mill with a demonstration. All staff were extremely friendly and ready with knowledge about the Lee to answer questions. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes.

Fun place to go. The staff was very knowledgable, friendly and professional. There are hiking trails that lead down to the Potomac river. Nice day trip.

Amazing and lovely. Rich history. The grounds were immaculate and the house was accesible on the guided tour. I wish they made it a little more kid friendly as the history portions and family information did drag a bit. I would like to try the self tour wands next time, and can't wait to go back in the Spring for the gardens blooming. Great day!!

Very knowledgeable and fun staff. The tour is worth every penny and more. The gardens are beautiful and the rest of the grounds really helps you understand plantation life.

The ancestral home of the Lees dating back to circa 1738. Excellent interpretation, helpful staff, and magnificent grounds. Be sure to check out the Clifts and the beach. Bluebirds, deer, groundhogs, and bald eagles can all be spotted here, and the mill pond is teeming with fish. A true gem easy distance from DC. They also provide overnight lodging at the Inn for those who want to spend the weekend.

Fascinating place. Home of the Lee's in the 1700s. The family had many members who were important in the American Revolution and early history of the country. Also Robert E. Lee was born and lived there till he was 4. Well preserved and beautiful grounds.

Always a nice place to visit! Robert E. Lee's birthplace with a great mansion to view as well as outer buildings (kitchen, stables, slave quarters, spring house), however could be kept in better shape and admission and tour prices are rather high.
