Sad that many of the recycled plastics aren’t being accepted anymore, as countries accepting them have stopped. Due to the mixed plastic in many items, the USA does nothing with them accept bury them due to the expensive separation processes involved. Plastic is toxic…..period! We do what we can, as do the recycling companies. It’s not them, it’s what industry can do economically. Don’t get me started on glass…..
Managers here are really friendly and the place overall is clean and does not stink, they accept, 1's 2's cardboard, paper, glass, metal aluminum, cooking oil, pizza boxes.
Hey there! Initially, I felt a bit anxious about visiting this location because I wasn't familiar with the procedure, but let me assure you, it's super straightforward and user-friendly. The center is fantastic, with ample parking available and easy access. The signage is clearly written and easy to follow, plus there's always someone on hand to assist you if you need it—they're really friendly! Overall, I really appreciate how well-organized everything is here.
The recycling center is cool, minus one of the guys who works there. I find him to be somewhat creepy and I don't know how to disengage from unwanted conversations.
4/22/2024 Happy Earth Day! I took my bottles, cans, and paper to McIntire Recycling Center yesterday. So nice to have a recycling center in Charlottesville ..so many people are conscious of the environment and utilize this recycling center.
You have to separate your recycling but the place is well maintained AND they provide compostable bags for food waste recycling! The hours of operation are very good.
Nice and convenient recycling center. It can get busy on weekends, but generally it's easy to get in and get out. There has been a steady decline in the types of plastics that are accepted for recycling, which means that a lot of common food packaging will end up in the landfill. Unfortunately there aren't any better recycling options available in Charlottesville. Update... Omg the recycling police! Several retired volunteers, trying to be helpful, but basically rejecting a lot of folks from recycling. We're now down to just 2 types of plastics. Wegman's recycles more items. It's ridiculous because the recycling patrol slows down operations and sends everyone back to their cars. There's no longer an incentive to recycle here.
Clean place with friendly staff and efficient separating/sorting system. Was able to get rid of a truly gargantuan amount of cardboard in about 10 minutes.
We've been going here for years, great place to recycle just about everything. Much better than the "single stream" services that aren't as good for recovery.
Many of the surrounding counties stopped recycling pick-up programs, and many no longer recycle plastics at all. I am very happy to have found this resource. Thank you for staying open!!!
Busy place but no problem. Staff person keeps the bins in good shape. Good to be able to recycle so much. Just wish they could take#5 plastic. There is so much of it.
They updated the signs advertising what materials are accepted since they are changing July 1st 2019. I always appreciate a well kept recycling facility.
Not sure what Julie is talking about. This is a professional and well-run recycling center with a responsive and educated staff. I sent a basic comment through their website asking if they might be able to handle a specific type of packing material. The next business day I got a response directing me to the available alternatives, their approximate cost, and the reasons why they did not accept this particular material. I wish recycling centers were this forthcoming and communicative in other communities in which I have lived. Well done.
My first time here after moving to Charlottesville. I was surprised to find I had to separate news print from Brown paper bags. But since this is the case couldn’t the containers for these be placed next to one another. Otherwise, I am glad to have a place to recycle.
