This place earned it's low rating. They take all day of course, but besides that ... it's WAY too unorganized and confusing. The lack of signs and instructions are ridiculous.
This place have the worst scale out system I've ever experienced. They just let you guess your way through it with 45,000 LBs of unsecured steel on your deck.
Drivers for this company are so unaware of their surroundings. I was driving in my car with my baby and almost ran us over. And 3 other vehicles. Whoever was the driver does not need to work there.

We've picked up loads from Gerdau Midlothian Steel Mill several times, and it's always been a smooth and easy process. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the facility is well-organized.
Just follow the rules and be on time, and you'll have no problems. They take safety seriously, which is important.
We recommend Gerdau Midlothian Steel Mill to other drivers. It's a great place to pick up loads!
I got a load out of here that called for space between bundles. First of all nobody even tells me what I'm getting. I didn't have much vertical blocking/ T blocks but they should have provided it. It should have been a 1 tier load. Stupid forklift operator stacked blocks of wood instead joining them together with nails. Very difficult to work with. I had to shout to be heard. Ignorant dispatchers, first check to make sure your company even has the necessary equipment for proper loading, at least 10 vertical t-blocks and at least enough 8-foot 4x4's for a bulkhead before even attempting to dispatch a driver here.
BULK Tanker Delivery. Check in with front gate they will give you a map and direct you to receiving. Receiving will contact the necessary department to come get you and escort you to the correct unloading area. It's a dust bowl but they have a water truck trying to keep it to a minimum. Everyone I came into to contact with was pleasant and easy to work with. Only complaint is all the metal debris on the road. Not sure what anyone can do about that so use caution.
Terrible I don't know how any of you give it more than 1 star this place is by appt you can show up 1hr early, but there's times like today where it takes an hr or more just to scale in!! Then you gotta go through the TX Gerdau rigmarole thats mainly sitting around waiting.
I read some other reviews where people thought drivers were possibly sitting on the scales for no reason. There's a reason many trucks load in the B yard when it backs up anyone on the scales going to B yard can't exit.
So appointment time was at 9 a.m , I scaled in at 8:47 and now I'm getting loaded as I'm typing this. I was nervous when booking this load and seeing all the reviews but I can honestly say they aren't loading slow with any trucks that I've seen. The only thing for me was the directions to the yard I needed to go to. Ok had to jump out and readjust the dunnage and now am loaded at secured at 9:48 . Good timing
I was expecting to be there all day after reading the reviews, but for having 7 trucks ahead of me, things went pretty good, loaded steel beams in and out in just over 3.5 hours.
Wasn't as bad as I thought. Brought in tin bales from Roswell, NM on a Saturday morning. Crushed cars are on the right lane and bales / scrap are on the left lane. Waiting in line about 30 minutes or so. Safety Protocol allows a few trucks in at a time. Go in scale, through the maze, get unloaded ( nice folks ), scale out.
Horrible place. I tried to look up the address before I took the load but it was misleading. The address I read had 5 stars. You have to use Gerdau not 300 Ward to see this. Huge mistake. This place is a wreck. No direction. You just twirl around until you find where to go. When you finally find your destination there's 10 trucks in front of you. You might have better luck if you're not picking up under the crane. I'll never come back

So it was my first and last time coming to get a load from this plant. The person in charge of getting signs put up so drivers know where there going must have quite because there in bad need of signage for directions to navigate around the plant.
After I got checked in we set in line for over 7 hours so they could load 5 bundles for my load. I don't recommend picking up loads from this plant unless you want to lose a lot of money and a lot of time.
Delivered scrap here(flatbed) and took over 4 hours, don’t pay detention so never again. If you’re in a end dump or flatbed hauling scrap go to the drive just past the main gate, 1C I believe, turn in there and if your hauling shredded scrap or in an end dump you’ll stay in the left lane and follow the line and if you’re hauling scrapped cars you get to skip everybody so stay to the right and you’ll take turns hopping on the scale. BOL stated it was 24hrs but I’d call and verify.
Not really a review, but a helpful tip for anyone trying to get to Star Recycling. They are located all the way in the back of Gerdau and when you're coming down Ward Rd bypass that first entrance where all the flatbeds are lined up for the steel mill. Continue straight on Ward to the stop sign, turn right and drive to the main entrance guard shack. They will give you a map to Star Recycling. You do not have to wait in any lines or scales, you bypass all that mess.
NOTE: I discovered another way in to Star Recycling. Follow Ward Rd to very end, turn right and bypass any trucks in line for that back scale. There's a gate that will raise and let you through. This shortcut bypasses everything I wrote in the first part of my review. I've included a screenshot with colored routes. Purple is main gate, yellow is shortcut.
This place takes a very long time to unload!! They don't care that you set for 4 hours and run out of time on the ELD, 6-10 PM with only 4 trucks ahead of me... never again will I haul a load into this facility!!!
I hate loading here. Showed up at 4 one time. Didn’t get out till midnight. Showed up again at 230. Didn’t get out till 9 pm. Place is a joke during shift Change. Sometimes they load really fast sometimes you’ll sit there for 8 hours.
They are rediculous when it comes to checking people in waited 2 hours alone on two people camped out on their scale for who knows what reason the fork lift drivers SEE you sitting there in their station to be loaded and still drive off any way i have wasted 6 hours waiting and still have not been loaded they do not care that we are losing our time waiting on them because they get paid by the hour any way. Just a huge head eq
I'm really unhappy with my experience here! I waited for 4 hours and 15 minutes to get loaded. 'Extremely slow' process with no explanation - my forklift driver tells me "that sucks for you". This place totally eats up your clock/money. Bring your lunch "and" dinner. Really wish I could do more to shed light on this place; maybe the local news.
Used to be a good place fo load but today myself and a handful of others that were parked on ward rd because our clocks ran out were told to get out because they didn't allow parking on Ward Rd anymore. If you guys are serious about that there needs to be an actual officer with DOT qualifications present. And oh yeah it needs to be written somewhere that this is a rule now.
