What clients say about Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek in West Liberty (OH)

This castle is a mile away from the Mac-O-Chee Castle(Mac-O-Chee was built/owned by the father, Piatt Castle was built/owned by his son). The Castle is currently closed for remodeling/repairs, but this is the Castle my aunt and uncle took my older sister and me to visit(I was 4ish at that time). There's a creek that is located on the back side of the Castle. I remember my aunt taking us and walking out on the rocks in the creek(ah childhood memories). Memorial visit.

Found Piatt Castle while looking for location on "Path of Totality" for Eclipse 2024! It was gorgeous inside & out! Goth aesthetic in architecture & orig furnishings, the history & original pieces museum/castle hold are absolutely astounding! Staff/establishment is kid friendly. It is in the "middle of nowhere" so prepare/grab any refreshments/needs may want beforehand.

Loved visiting this castle. It cost $16 per person to your the inside. We didn't think it was worth that cost though. $10 would have been reasonable IMO. The grounds are cool and so is the castle.

Only open on weekends. Didn't know that. Stopped by on my way home. Right down the road is a cemetery with Piatts buried there.

Piatt Castle Mac -A -Cheek- We just walked around the outside and peeked in the windows as we weren’t paying $15.00 pp to go inside. Some spots had caution tape around it, orange cones and a broom propped up so it looked unkept around the Castle itself

So peaceful and serene here! The tour was self guided but the caretaker was friendly and answered questions as needed. A portion of the home is off limits as it is occupied by family members. Entrance fee. Discount given for AAA membership. No parking fee.

Very interesting, lots of artifacts to look at, to know more information about the family and how many generations that lived there and still is,how many acres they started with.

Beautiful home. Very well preserved with great history. The docents working were very knowledgeable and answered all our questions and plus. Loved this place and so glad the owner allows tours.

Beautiful castle with much more of a rich, deeper history, than I would have guessed. Dale had good vibes and was incredibly informative, he was able to answer any questions my wife or I had.

A beautiful home! Wish they had a video about the history of the property. Too much to read. I took pictures of all the plaques, and can hopefully read them all at a later date. All the antiques were amazing! Even found a tunnel running from where the green house use to be to a part of the yard. The very last picture is of the Mac a Chee castle that is not currently open to the public but is being turned into a wedding venue. And we did not walk to check out the log cabin that's still standing on the property. That's older than the castle itself. We're older folks and can't do all that walking after viewing the first floor and the second floor of the castle. But the grounds are beautiful around the house.

What a wonderful place to visit while you are coming down to see Ohio Caverns. We'll worth the money and it is amazing that it has the original furniture, exquisite woodworking, great tour guide...

Wanted to leave a fresh review after coming back 5 years later. The grounds and garden are still beautiful, and the architecture is fantastic! The Piatts have a lot of both local and national history dating back to General Washington, you will find there is a lot of new things to learn about in these walls. Great location as well, with great eating such as Uncle Beth's nearby along with Ohio Caverns if you wanted to make a full day in the area. Everyone on site is friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

The grounds are beautiful and Peaceful. Inside is historical and pretty awesome to see!

The historical Piatt home is unique and the grounds are nicely kept and peaceful. We visited and explored the outdoors, but felt that the admission charge was a bit excessive for a self-guided tour of the home. Part of the home is "off limits" as a private residence and it appears that other areas of the grounds are private as well. We enjoyed the architecture and found some of the signage interesting. I wouldn't venture out of the way to visit--but, if you are in the area, it is an interesting piece of local history.

Definitely a neat little find! There was also a scavenger hunt the little ones can partake in. I've always admired vintage Gothic style. It's probably my favorite.

Our homeschool group visited today- tour guides were very knowledgeable. Would not recommend for families with little kids. A bit pricey- Bathrooms were really dirty and had lots of cobwebs.

Much smaller in person, but the castle contents were pretty cool, especially the war memorabilia from the family's various service members throughout the different wars. Hopefully they can maintain the building with ticket costs.

The tour is very small. You only get to enter three rooms, others are blocked off, and you can only lean in for a view. It's a nice glimpse of local history of a well to do family but the price is very high for what you get. 13$ for adults and 7$ for kids I believe. I would value this at 5$ tour.

My husband and I happened upon Piatt while in West Liberty today. We stepped back into time with the decor, furniture, war memorabilia, photographs and more. Our pleasant experience was even better with the knowledge from, Logan (staff). Thank you, Logan and the Family Member (we apologize we didn't get your name) for taking your time and talking to us and sharing your knowledge! Newlyweds John & Diana D. (CELLAR)

Is a very beautiful place, we enjoyed being able to walk around unattended and actually look at stuff without being watched over. The front desk attendant was friendly and even came outside and showed the little ones how to play with the primitive toys that were outside.

They have a kid’s scavenger hunt which was engaging for my 5 year old and you get a prize if you find all the items. Very cool place!

Incredible experience that was very personal and without words to describe. So much of the stories that are historically related, are just our own stories told again in a different light. It can bring wisdom, insight, and healing to spend time in places like this and to reap treasures of the past. A massive shout out to Logan and all his wisdom and the enjoyable fellowship my son and I had with him!

This is a unique museum/home. Not quite a castle, but close enough! The tour is self guided and there are several rooms to view on two floors. The price was a little high at $13. And one reviewer mentioned AARP discount, but they told me they did not have one Just AAA. If I was not camping nearby, I would not make a special trip. I thought the house was unique, but not anything worth a very long drive for. We spent about 45 minutes. There is a lot of information, but mostly centered around the Piatt family. Part of the home is still occupied.

You get a discount off the tour if you show your AARP membership! Cool place, relatively fast tour (we did the self-paced, took us like 30-40 min) and it was nice. Our favorite was the random door that was at the top of the castle tower visible from the outside.

Wonderful self guided tour. Highly recommend. Don't rush through it! Take your time and enjoy the history lesson.

Today we thoroughly enjoyed an amazing 1.5 hour Ohio History tour! We took a homeschool group of 55, and we were divided into 4 groups. The natural history of the area, Ohio history (within the greater scope of US history), and discussions of the development of transportation, industry and economics we're beautifully woven together with the rich family history of the Piatt family. (Think -the patriarch was a secretary to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War!) Students and parents were drawn into the story by assuming the characters of several generations of family members and following them as time progressed. I HIGHLY recommend visiting these local treasures! The drive is gorgeous and the Ohio Caverns are also close. As a side note, Margaret Piatt is so organized and an absolute delight to work with! This will not disappoint!!!

It's $15 per person, if you see just one. My husband and I went yesterday, but if you see both castles, and they are less than a mile apart, they give you a discount. We paid $50. They were built in 1887 so yes, they aren't in pristine shape, but they are perfectly taken care of and totally safe. We were amazed at how great of shape they were in. The larger one is in the worst shape. Gorgeous homes and the grounds are beautiful. There are highly knowledgeable tour guides there, but they basically give you an overview of the castle's history and then let you explore on your own, which I prefer, although if you have any question they are very happy to answer them. I can't wait to go back with friends!
