A great historical area to take kids or just take a walk and admire the beauty. Like the area for the northern lights. No light pollution except for the vehicles.
This is a great place to visit, know the Native American history or simply go for a hike. There are parking spots right before the gate and a few benches to rest.
No cost entry, great walking trail on the eastern shore of the Missouri River with informative signs along the path chronicling the history of the site. Open 24-7.
We had an incredible experience at the Double Ditch Indian Village which we could have enhanced by arriving earlier. Our visit was 45 minutes long due to our timing. We watched an incredible sunset from the bluff the village was located on. There was plenty of parking. We only say one other tourist. If we had more time we would have planned our trip earlier in the day, at least an hour before sunset so we could walk around the site reading the signs provided by the park service. Great visit.
Nice place to go for a walk with some sight seeing. Beautiful views of the river. Great place to go during sunsets. Trash cans and dog poop bags available. Has a kayak launch too
Quiet, beautiful and an important site next to the Missouri River that was built and used by Native Americans. Interpretive signs are located around the site to identify features and provide information about its history.
The scenery alone made it worth the visit! We were here in early October when the leaves were turning. It was absolutely gorgeous!
It doesn’t look like much when you pull into the tiny parking area but don’t let that dissuade you from going! It’s a long walking trail with signs along the way explaining how the Indian tribe lived here. We didn’t walk the whole trail (we’re old!) but it really was interesting.
A very isolated historical site north of Bismarck along the Missouri River. The trail is somewhat marked through the first half of it but beyond the shelter/guest book it's beyond hard to follow the loop to the other side which could be disorienting to anyone without a good sense of direction
It might seem a little barren but there's a ton of history behind this place. Fantastic view of the river, great place to get out and burn afew calories or even a nice place to go by yourself to relax.
The area is clean, easy to navigate, and beautiful. There are plaques detailing the history about the site, and are very interesting to read. It's a medium sized walking area, and is good for a quick stop to soak in some scenery. The sun sets on the other side of the river, and can be viewed very well from here. There are benches to sit on as well. If you are passing through, I would recommend stopping here for a quick stroll.
A fascinating historic and archaeological site situated on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. I suggest visiting the ND Heritage Center first to see their Double Ditch mural. This will help you become familiar with how life was like in this Mandan Indian village in its heyday. Then go to the real site, and with its silent stillness, let the past come alive in your imagination.
Nice view of river. Gives a sense of the life on these river bluffs. Not much for kids but has historical boards to read. Pretty country. Nice place for a small picnic.
Total disappointment. Traveled 30 minutes out of our way for a plaque. Plus, the GPS took us there when we were trying to see the Menoken Historic Village.
