The Yaphank Garage Museum is a beautifully restored piece of history that takes you straight back to what a 1930s gas station used to look like.
This old Shell gas station features a single automotive garage door and three vintage hand-cranked gas pumps that really set the scene. One of the coolest parts is the large front window—when you look inside, you get a clear view of how the station was set up back in the day. It’s like peeking through a time machine.
On the east side of the building, there’s an original outdoor automobile ramp that was once used for repairs, which adds another layer of authenticity. Right next to it sits a classic 1936 Dodge tow truck, fully restored and full of character. The lettering on the doors reads “Yaphank Garage Shell and Machine Shop, Yaphank, LI,” along with “24 Hours Towing – Phone Yaphank 535,” which is a great old-school touch. The truck is dedicated to the memory of C.O. Ralph “Skip” Vuolo (2009), with “Skip” proudly displayed on the doors. And the Building is Dedicated in honor of Detective Peter J Smith

Everything here has been carefully restored, and while the building itself is locked, the outside displays and viewing window give you plenty to take in. It’s a simple stop, but a meaningful one—especially if you appreciate history, classic vehicles, or just want to see how things were done back in the day.
I highly recommend checking this place out. It’s a great reminder of how the past used to be—and honestly, they don’t make places like this anymore. ?
