What clients say about Bear Mountain Inn - Overlook Lodge in Highland Falls (NY)

A nice escape from Manhattan, just about an hour away. The area offers hiking, skiing, and an ice‑skating rink. Most rooms are located around the inn rather than inside it (a quick 1–2 minute drive), so keep that in mind. You can dine at the inn or grab something from their café, but I’d recommend exploring the great food options in nearby Cold Spring, where there are plenty of shops and eateries. If you’re in the area, West Point Academy and Bannerman Castle are also close by

We came for a Christmas week getaway with our grandchildren age 3 & 6. Stayed three nights.|We stayed in two suites in the Inn. Rooms were not well lit at all. Pretty basic accommodations.|The Junior Suite did not have a closet or any pegs to hang up wet winter coats. Just an armoire.|The King Suite had a closet but once again no place to hang wet coats. Both mini bar/coffee areas were not well lit.|It feels like many different vendors. Hiker’s Cafe specialty coffee was not worth it. That’s the only place for breakfast, unless it’s the weekend and they are serving brunch.|We made dinner reservations in Restaurant 1915. Service was so slow and the menu was pretty basic. Not enough wait staff and we had to ask and wait for water refills and condiments. I also question why a child’s meal never includes fruit or a vegetable just french fries. It was very dark and the kiddos needed our phones to be able to color while waiting for the meal.|On Mondays the restaurant and carousel are closed. We ended up going into Cortlandt Manor to go bowling at Hudson Lanes and had a wonderful Mexican lunch at Taqueria La Mexicana. The service and food were wonderful!|I’m glad we bought crafts and games for the kids to do. It’s basically the carousel, skating and the zoo, That’s about it.|The staff at the Spa were professional and I would recommend a treatment.|The front desk folks couldn’t be nicer.|It’s just pretty basic. I expected more from a historic hotel.|Make it a day trip and stay somewhere nicer.

Everything was beautiful: the surrounding nature, the mountains, the lake, and the incredible infrastructure. Everything was very well built and maintained. It's an excellent place to relax and have fun. The rooms were very comfortable. The food at the main restaurant was incredible.

Beautiful property in an amazing wooded, mountain setting. Looks and feels like a lodge with a history. Rooms are priced fairly and are business class, not luxury class. Check-in is centralized as there are different building locations on the property, so that can seem a bit clunky on a first visit, but staff was charming and helpful. Still and all, lovely, quiet, and worth a visit.

This Overlook Lodge is absolutely disgusting. Don't get fooled like I did. I accidentally booked through a 3rd party, the whole time thinking I was booking the Inn. When I checked in I was informed we were in the lodge. I can't even believe this place passes inspection. It smells really awful and moldy. It's dirty and doesn't seem safe. But now we were stuck here so we stayed. I'm told the Inn is only slightly better. We will never stay here again. Just gross.

There is nobody (no staff) at this location. If you need any service you have to drive to the other side of the lake to the inn where the concierge desk is. It's just a no frills place to sleep. The lodge has a nice little balcony and a sitting area but there was no staff at any time of the day when we stayed there. Also when you come out you can only go right. If you want to go north you have to turn around at the inn. Seem like a reasonable price but again, it's not the Bear mountain Inn!

A very good wedding venue. But as lodging this is far too pricey at $245 a night for what is essentially a 1970s type of hotel with many problems. We stayed in the Overlook so perhaps the main lodge is nicer but the main lodge only has 16 rooms. The shower water gets cold pretty quickly and very low water pressure. Bathroom had no glasses, they ask you to use your paper coffee cups. Heating system is amazingly complicated. Noisy doors to the stairs. No elevator in this hotel and very cold stairwell. Main lodge exterior needs new paint badly. Staff are very helpful though. Beautiful carousel for events.

$60 a night per dog WOW! What a real disappointment, last 3 years my wife and I have stayed there at least five times always enjoyed ourselves. Well, thanks to whomever runs the show there greed has taken over. Now it’s $60 a dog per a night. We were planning on going there for her birthday for five nights and when we found out about the price, well the heck with Bear Mountain greed. What a real rotten thing to do so my wife and I who normally stay anywhere for 5+ nights felt $300 for five nights just for a dog to stay with us is ridiculous. They don’t clean the rooms until the sixth day (they state so, plus my wife and I stayed longer than five days so we know that’s for a fact) so it can’t be about cleanliness cause if that was their concern, they wouldn’t wait till the sixth day to start cleaning a room. I’ve said this before a lot of places changing their policies using Covid as an excuse all this other nonsense. I really do hope places like this start to close down and some of the upper management lose their positions due to their greed and just outright BS. If it’s true that a certain commission runs the show there then it doesn’t surprise me. OK do they control my opinion too as they do with the policy?

Lovely, clean hotel in Bear Mountain. We stayed at the Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain. The Overlook Lodge is located in another street a couple of miles away from the main hotel. It has a separate, smaller parking lot with plenty of room to park. Our room was very quaint, lovely and basic. It’s exact what we needed. We were visiting with friends who were RVing. Initially we had planned to stay in one of the cabins in Croton Point park. The cabin was filthy, uninhabitable and had little critters setting up residence. We were able to book a last minute reservation at the Overlook Lodge. We were so so grateful. Staff are lovely. Thank you.

Rooms are comfortable and clean. Nice views in winter depending on the side of the building. Fridge and coffee maker are standard but the freezer is super tiny. Bring a very long phone charger because the receptacles in the lights on the nightstand are useless. Also, be prepared to hear everything that is going on in neighboring rooms and the hallway. Walls must be very thin. Otherwise, a lovely little relaxing getaway.

Wonderful time staying at the lodge for two nights on my anniversary. The view out our room was incredible as you can see. Room was comfortable and clean. Full cable TV and such a nice location with full access to the amenities at the main building.

Reviews let you know what to expect — yes, Overlook Lodge is about a 20 min walk from Bear Mountain Inn, no there is no staff other than cleaning staff or maintenance crew on site. However I loved the location (and I was on foot — if you are driving, it’s not a big deal — and if you ask the staff for a ride and if someone is available, the staff will get you from one side to the other), for the sense of being within nature, fantastic view (note: some rooms do not face the Lake, if you’re worried about that, I guess ask?), and there’s even a service road short-cut (note: steep) to Major Welch Trail, the more scramble, mammoth rock type trail up to the tower viewpoint and continuing on the Appalachian Trail. Bedding felt super clean or even new, room was huge, little kitchenette w sink, Keurig coffee maker, fridge and microwave perfect for being self-sufficient and preparing foods for the trail. YES the bathroom is on the small side, which I didn’t feel as much (5’6”, medium build), but since other reviews mention it if you require a larger bathroom perhaps it is tight. I did see another guest at the Lodge who was a wheelchair user, so there must also be an accessible bathroom. Huge TV for relaxing in the evening. I had a great time. Nothing felt run down (as mentioned by others), staff were all super friendly and helpful (although note a lot of them said they hadn’t hiked the trails!). Trails are all well-marked. I lucked out with great weather, even the morning it rained. With enough lead time for the booking, I felt it was also great value. Lovely!

Great location. We have stayed at the cabins and Overlook and these areas need better maintenance attention. Shower didn’t work in our room. Great spot but be sure to look over everything in the room when you check in to avoid surprises.

Easy to book rooms on the website but needs a better system to cancel or make changes. They never responded to my email. CoachUSA has one bus each direction from Port Authority to the Inn - just make sure to wait on the main road, not at the Inn. You can do a day trip on the weekends but will need to stay for 2 nights on weekdays if you want to hike. Water, food & souvenirs are available at the Inn. Bathrooms at the Inn are blocked off for the people staying there, there are bathrooms outside.||||I stayed in a room at the Stone Cottage so the walk wasn’t bad, you can roll your bags on the path along the lake and the driveway to the cottages. Staying at the Inn would be more convenient, tho. I’m glad I was able to go (it’s been 3 years), the fall colors were absolutely gorgeous. The room was pretty big and the bed was comfortable. I would’ve like a small table and chair, so that I could sit somewhere other than the bed. The bathroom was small but the shower had great pressure. There was a mini fridge and 2 bottles of water provided each day. I didn’t use the shared space - unless you weee sharing the cottage with friends/family, it didn’t seem to be a place to hang out.

The location is good for hiking and has nice views in some areas but the room is not great comfort wise. There were four of us sharing two beds and no one had a good nights sleep. The bed and pillows are not good at all. The air quality isn’t great and not easy to work. The traffic to get to the lodge is ridiculous on weekends so plan ahead. Took about an hour to get less than a mile.

I was very excited to go to the bear mountain and they put us in one of the cottages. We'll to my surprise this room was horrid. They had the tiniest bathroom, a spider was in the tub. The bathroom was so small, you have to turn left and right in a tiny circle to access the toilet, sink, tub, and close the door. The door did not open fully because it was blocked by the tiny sink. The shower curtain had red droplets on it that may have been blood. The room had an Emergency Exit in our room that was to be used for all occupants of the cottage in case of an emergency with eight rooms. The green light on the emergency sign kept me up all night.

Had to cancel and staff was very helpful and understanding. With professionalism and kindness. I will definitely be rebooking with them in the future. I can't rate the room or anything due to that. But having a business ourselves I was very impressed with the customer service.

We stayed in one of the stone cottages. As you would expect given the nature of Overlook Lodge, the room was not up to modern standards. It was tiny and did not have a desk. The bathroom was very small with no place for toiletries. The walls were thin and you could hear people come and go outside. But the scenery and setting are gorgeous. So if you are willing to put up with the inconvenience and not have to spend any extra time in the room it is worth it. The 1915 Restaurant in the main hotel, a very pleasant half mile walk from the stone cottages, was excellent.

I stayed at one of the Stone Cottages for the Bear Mountain Inn as part of a wedding party so I will start my review with my accommodation. According to both the website and my confirmation email, the stone cottages are supposed to have queen sized beds. All the beds in the cottage we stayed in were not queens; they are full sized beds. When I brought this up to the front desk, the gentleman there was apologetic and seemed surprised to hear that they were full beds. He said they should have been queen beds. I asked if I was put in a different cottage that had full beds and he said that all the cottages are the same type. He went on to ask if they were comfortable anyways. My problem with the queen bed was not resolved. After the front desk staff apologized, he said he sent a receipt to my email [it never sent] and then quickly moved on to the next customer. I paid for a queen room [not a full] but did not receive a queen room as advertised.|| In addition, during the two nights I stayed there, a male maintenance workers walked in without saying a word or saying who we were into the cottage twice! The first time was during the wedding day [the cottage was booked for a wedding party to get ready]. He walked in while the bride was naked and changing into her dress! The second time another man walked in the next morning while we were having breakfast. ||The rehearsal dinner was at the 1915 Restaurant. The food, drinks and service were excellent. The reception was at the Merry-Go-Round. It was beautiful. The staff was great, the food was also delicious.

First night was fine but second night Saturday there was a sweet 16 at the hotel. Loud music from when we got back to the hotel around 730 until after 11 pm. Talk about not being able to sleep. We stayed on the second floor and could hear every single lyric to the songs and people screaming. Very inconsiderate and annoying the hotel staff doesn’t have any noise restrictions. Wasn’t a nice experience overall on Saturday.

The only good thing about staying at the Overlook Lodge at Bear Mountain Inn was the location and access to the trails. Other than location, this was a less than satisfactory stay. We stayed here for one night - upon checking in we reached our room and found that the room had not been cleaned since the last hotel guests left (the bed was messy, the bathroom was dirty, the trash can was full). We called the main desk and they were very apologetic and said they'd change our rooms, but we had to drive all the way back to the main Inn to get new keys. They had enough availability on a Saturday night to switch our rooms but claimed they were fully booked on Sunday night and can't offer late check out for anyone. Additionally, the rooms have central air-conditioning so we could not control the temperature for our room, and were freezing the entire time. The hotel lists a pool as an amenity, but fail to mention that it is a public pool on the premise that you have to pay cash to use, even if you are a guest at the inn. Not worth it for the price, will not be staying here again.

After spending some amazing time at the Memorial Tower, with its magnificent views off the River Valley; we returned to the Inn (which we had checked out earlier) and engaged in their afternoon high-tea. |The Inn has a comfortable wood-centric interior, which is a surprisingly pleasant complement to the formality of a full service tea.|Our server, Shari, was friendly and attentive; lending to the enjoyment of the experience. |The sweet and savories accompanying the tea were nicely conceived and quite tasty. |All and all, this became a very satisfying afternoon; and along with the earlier spectacular time at the Memorial Tower, made for an excellent start to our 10 day exploration of the Hudson River Valley. |The Inn has a nice gift shop, with a decent variety of area related items from which to choose. Any staff members we encountered throughout the facility, were welcoming, informative and accommodating. |Even though it was late April, there was a fair amount of activity at the Inn; and as we were leaving in the late afternoon, some event was creating a steady stream of incoming traffic to the parking area. |If we are again in the area, a visit back to the Inn will definitely be on our agenda.

The quick description of the rooms at Bear Mountain inn are slightly misleading. Our stay was convenient to hiking , nice walks , and private parking but that was the only positive part to mine and my wife’s vacation. The “cottage” is a shared space with 4-5 other private rooms. If you are looking to sleep in , you won’t be able to. As I’m up very early, guests let the doors slam and it wakes up other guests as i can hear them complain. Our room would keep getting spider crickets. (We noticed one right as we checked in) . We would both wake up very stuffy which we guess may be from the carpet and possibly the central air filter. For $200+ a night for 2 nights in June , it wasn’t worth it since we would avoid our room and i would constantly have to check our bathroom to kill the few spider crickets that would some how appear.

That’s a 3-star hotel, you cannot expect unbelievable service here. No elevator in this building- two floors and basement only. But you can get peace and quiet here after concrete jungles. Guys on front desk not always here - so use phone to ask questions. You can always find coffee in the lobby . If you’re so picky - this place not for you , but we ordered the last room here.

Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of Bear Mountain State Park, Bear Mountain Inn Lodge is a haven of rustic charm and modern comforts. From the moment you arrive, you're enveloped in tranquility, the hustle and bustle of everyday life melting away as you breathe in the crisp mountain air. The lodge is a testament to the region's rich history, its stone and timber architecture blending seamlessly with the surrounding wilderness. The cabins, each a cozy retreat, offer a taste of authentic mountain living with inviting fireplaces, plush bedding, and breathtaking views. Beyond the cabins, the lodge's amenities further enhance the experience. The on-site spa provides a welcome respite with its rejuvenating treatments, while the renowned Restaurant 1915 tantalizes taste buds with its exquisite culinary creations. But what truly sets Bear Mountain Inn Lodge apart is its exceptional staff. Their warm hospitality and genuine care for guests are evident in every interaction, ensuring a memorable stay. My recent visit to Bear Mountain Inn Lodge was nothing short of extraordinary. The tranquil surroundings, charming cabins, and impeccable service created an unforgettable experience. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature, all while enjoying the comforts of a luxurious lodge. If you're seeking an escape from the ordinary, I wholeheartedly recommend Bear Mountain Inn Lodge. It's a place to unwind, recharge, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Awesome place to stay, especially if you're into hiking. So many trails close by, including the Appalachian Trail. The Overlook Lodge has a great view of the lake, the rooms are big and had all I needed. Some reviews mentioned a strange smell but I had nothing of that. The restaurant in the Inn is fantastic but only open from Wednesday to Sunday. Staff was friendly and helpful. I'll be definitely back!

I came to bear mountain for my anniversary, beautiful area with lots to do. I’ve always wanted to stay at the lodge and I really wanted to give a good review but my experience was less than mediocre. The overlook lodge had the only open room for the dates we were looking at. The rooms have AC units in them which is nice, but I don’t think they’re maintained. There was an OVERWHELMING mold smell in the room, I’m glad we only spent 2 nights because I honestly wonder about the safety. The unit was also leaking so there was a large wet spot on the carpet. There was also a super loud event we weren’t warned about and you can easily hear the rooms beside you and talking in the halls. Overall a pretty disappointing experience

The Overlook Lodge is something of an annex of the Bear Mountain Inn. The downfalls of booking here are that the place hasn't been updated in a very long time, there is one vending machine in the lobby that doesn't have much, and is really expensive. There was only one person on staff in the lobby on Friday until 11PM , and Saturday during the day. There is no elevator, so if that is an issue, ask to be placed in a first floor room. The road leading to the lodge is almost impossible to get to on the first try, because it looks more like an access road, and the roads haven't been paved since Rudy Guiliani was mayor of NYC. Look out for potholes! The plus side is that there is a gorgeous view of Hessian Lake from the main balcony, and or from your room if you're lucky to get one on that side. The person that did staff the front desk was very friendly. The rooms were very clean, and the beds were uncommonly comfortable for a hotel. The heating system took a bit to get used to, but it's better than the window units you're used to seeing. Any money they spent on upgrades must have gone towards the climate control. They have a security layer in place that requires you to have room key to get into the lobby when there's no one at the front desk. This place blended into the nature surrounding it. It felt isolated, but oddly safe. If you're expecting the hospital like ambience of a Hampton Inn, this isn't the place to go. It has way more charm than that, and a few less services.
