What clients say about Fort Herkimer Church in Mohawk View (NY)

While the church itself is beautiful, trying to get a wedding ceremony set up is extremely difficult. They wanted to wait until a couple months before our wedding to look at the church, but we requested to see it sooner. Just to find out that they will not be opening the church due to high school graduation falling on the same weekend. While I can absolutely understand this, that should've been discussed with us when we asked about a date back in June/July of this year for a wedding in June of 2026. Meanwhile, we show up to view the church and 2 minutes in are asked if we are set on the date after sending save the dates out. Yes, we're set on the date. We were also told that another couple had requested that day too, so why not just call and let us know about it? Luckily we didn't put any money down, but it was really a shame to not get any support, only told "well there's other churches you can go to" very unprofessional. Both my fiance and I had taken the day off to view the church, just to be there for 5 minutes and not even given an apology.

Church is only open about 1/ year. The adjacent town park is awesome! Bathroom facilities and the pavilion has outlets you can use. Picnic tables.

An interesting roadside stop. If you're following the Erie canal this is worth a quick stop.

Such a beautiful piece of history, the church and its grounds are very well kept. You cal walk down by the river, and there's a nice little beach there perfect for skipping rocks. There's also a very nice paved nature trail.

Stopped in for the 4th of July service. Wonderful experience connecting with the past where this Church provided a place of defense and safety during the American Revolution with Britain. Really impressed the meaning of the 4th of July.

Cool church that served as a fort during the American Revolutionary war. It's worth a stop to see the unique stone structure. It still has gunports from the war built into it.

Really nice looking, historic church and cemetery from the 1700s. Plenty of parking and the Canal Trail is nearby and you can also walk down to the canal and enjoy that as well while there

I only visited via the Empire State/Erie Canal Trail. I was looking for the gravestone of a friend's ancestors while I was there - but never found it

I absolutely love this church! So much history and it is definitely worth seeing the inside! I noticed many reviewers have not been inside! It is so stunning! You can feel the history! As the oldest standing building in Herkimer Co, the grave sites, the battles and the feasts can almost be imagined if you close your eyes. The Mohawk Valley Rotary (former member) cleans this church every Fall so the Thanksgiving Dinner can commence. Be sure to think of Mr. Roger Skinner when you visit as he was one of the best Rotarians there was.

Amazing history at this site. If you visit, be sure to take a look around at the gravestones near the front and back of the church.

A church with an old cemetery. Didn’t go inside. It’s near a really pretty section of the Erie Canal so I’d suggest a walk.

Nice little tour. Some early history of the German Palentines. You have to make arrangements through their website for someone to open and give tour of inside. No charge. You can view outside and grounds on your own.

Easy to stop by for 10 min. American history right before you. Awesome gazebo to enjoy too. Bike or hike Erie Canal.

I love the history of the valley. It's also a great place for a walk along the canal.

Aww folks, read some history would you? Dozens of 'reviews' here and no one talks more than a phrase and I see one date. This is thought to be one of the oldest churches in all of New York State. From the Mohawk Valley Region Path Through History Page: "Built between 1753 and 1767, Fort Herkimer Church is one of the oldest churches in New York State and the oldest building in Herkimer County. It serves as a reminder of days past, having functioned as both a fortress during the French and Indian War and American Revolution as well as a place of worship for valley settlers."

Looking through the windows from outside. The place looks in great shape. I guess you have to contact the curator to get inside.

A pretty neat spot but not much to see. The grass wasn't mowed making it difficult to walk the graves and no plaque with history.

This appears to be a beautiful older structure and an extremely old and under maintained cemetary. The grass wasnt even mowed when I was there but I would fall short of saying it appeared abandoned as there were fresh flags on the veterans graves (I'm assuming from memorial day)

Quaint, intimate venue for a wedding. I'm not sure what type of HVAC is used (if any at all), so keep it in mind depending on the season. Beautiful architecture and very well taken care of!

Rich in history. Very nice & well maintained trail for running, biking, skating. The gazebo offers shade for a picnic. Grounds are clean and family friendly.

I love anything that can be connected to the birth of this great nation. The Mohawk Valley has so much rich history you're missing out on the connection to American history if you haven't looked into it. Do a little research and you'll see what you can discover. You may even find you're more connected than you thought! It's tied to the Battle of Oriskany near Fort Stanwicks in Rome for example.

We didn't get to see the inside the church because we got there on a Saturday and there were no tours that day. We got to see what we could. We'll come back later during regular hours. It's one of those hidden gems that's outside in our backyard.

Excellent piece of history. Thanksgiving service was beautiful. Great history lesson from Mr Nasypany. Local treasure

Beautiful old church. Great open area with a gazebo, nice place to stop off for picnic or for a brief walk down the bike path that runs along the Erie Canal.

The church is very well maintained and the grounds itself are very well kept. They hold an amazing service every holiday and the bike path makes it a convenient stop to check out.

I've never actually been in the church (though I would love to sometime). But I go there with my daughter & grandsons for the Easter egg hunt every year. Very nice! Also walked the canal trail there to the park area. Sweet!

Park your car take a walk or ride your bike along the trail. It a 3-mile trail does non- stop to Mohawk, NY. My favorite trail in the valley. Watch out for the dog walkers when riding your bike and those wearing earbuds.
