Rude….
That was my experience from start to finish
First time visiting and I stopped in the main office to ask what I should do
Was greeted with resentment and a unfriendly point to the general area stating #1 building
A little surprised by my encounter I returned to my vehicle and looked for #1 building
I saw #5, #7, nothing with a #1
Eventually I found an employee who told me I needed to drive behind the buildings to access #1
That would have been very helpful to explain in the main office
After dumping my cans I returned to the main office with my paperwork to finalize the transaction
At the office a encountered the same rudeness as before and after giving the paperwork to them I was handed another piece of paperwork and told very rudely to go to the machine and follow the directions
I thought I weird but continued to the machine
I followed the directions and the machine gave me my money but forgot to give me my change
I went back to the employee against my better judgment and asked about the missing change
It was only .49 cents and I was not really worried it wanted to check to be safe
I was confronted with a barrage of negative comments about this that and the other thing
Very rude
Very disrespectful
No respect
No empathy
I will not be back and I would suggest you do the same

Processing was very slow, can only unload one car at a time and you have to wait on the hill in line. Only one guy working one scale, max of 2 scales at this location. 2 pickups in front of me when I arrived took 17 minutes before I got up, neither had all that much stuff.
Yard was very, very muddy and I saw a decent amount of debris which had me worried about a popped tire.
Staff was very friendly, payment through the office was fast and easy, scrap prices are very good.
I usually go to EMR, but recently they won't buy barebright unless you're an electrician. So I took the extra 15 second drive down barge channel road to Alter, I don't think I'll ever go back to EMR. Alter is quieter, cleaner, less chaotic. I think the employee doing the scales was named.Chris (forgive me if I'm wrong) but what a joy to work with. Super helpful, filled me in on tips and secrets to maximize my payout. Gave me some free buckets and the cashier was just as friendly and polite. Few times EMR has turned me away from cashing the check they just wrote cause I was 30 minutes to close(???) send me to the bank 10 minutes away, just for EMR to not clear the check on their end, which means no cash, waste of time and gas. Alter has an automatic payment machine, cashier hands you your receipt, you scan the barcode,and cash comes out. So simple and relaxed. Only reason I contemplating giving less stars is so it doesn't turn into a crazy, chaotic mess like EMR. But honestly if I could give more stars I would Alter hands down has a new customer. You guys rock!!?
Pretty easy to scrap here, take first right get on scale, pull up to intercom and wait. They will tell you when you can proceed forward and where to dump your load. Pretty easy.
I always turn in my husband’s copper and this is my favorite place to do so. Michael is ALWAYS so nice and helpful! Super easy to get in and out of and they also support the community!
I really like this place. ALTERS PAYS MORE for ALL kinds and types of scrap metal and E scrap then all other places in the metro to before. Great staff, simple set up and easy to do. Whenever i do scrap metal, i always go to Alters now. I have referred everybody i know straight to Alters and everyone who has gone there has later told me I was right and thanks for the referral. I like this place. Good job Alters staff. See you next time I come in.
If this is the first time you've been to a place like this, this is not the place to learn.
Very confusing and no instructions or signs anywhere. Staff is not helpful, either their scale is inaccurate or they are screwing people over on purpose.
I'm not sure any other scrap yard would be any better, but I wont be back.
I'd rather just donate my scrap to my work for free than go to that hellish place for pennies on the dollar.
Would have done 1 star but the person on the phone was decent and they weren't too terribly rude but I am the CUSTOMER.
I've heard nothing but good things even your reviews are awesome. I'm super new to this recycling thing and I could really use some advice on aluminum cans I have a ton of them do you accept cans at your location? If so how much are you paying per pound ? Please if I'm completely in the wrong place I would really truly appreciate any help to point me in the right direction I really need to get a good price per pound fast... long story short I was played for a fool and used so now I'm left with 3 different debts that I want to get delt with immediately thank you guys very much for any advice you have about aluminum cans and also any leads for great prices and places to take them if yall don't accept cans that is Have a wonderful morning everyone and stay warm.
All of the guys who weigh my aluminum cans are courteous and helpful ....The young lady who pays me is also courteous and helpful. .....They give me the option of being paid by check or cash .......The cash option is great because I don't have to wait for a check to clear ......There is no reason for me to go to any other recycling company. ......Recycling scrap metal is a win-win activity because it helps the environment, creates jobs, and I get paid for doing it!
These guys are the biggest con artists out there. I asked for a price on my cadillac converter and they ripped me off for about $200 and said they can't give it back to me. They take the cheapest price they can find then ship it out to someone that knows what their doing and collect your money. You shouldn't be taking these items for recyclei f your not able to evaluate the price. I'm contacting the better business bureau this is straight up robbery. You should be shut down for these type of business transactions.
very friendly and knowledgeable staff who are patient with new scrappers. they also made sure to help me figure out how to sort my stuff to maximize the amount of money i would receive for my efforts. they also helped me to figure out what was a complete waste of my time vs what was smart to process and break down further. these people are #1 in the business as far as im concerned and they are also located in a very convenient spot for me because its right off highway 52 and concord so if im scrapping anywhere in saint paul or the surrounding suburbs its not even a choice as to where to cash in at!!!!
Took my mom to recycle pop and beer bottles she collected over many years.
Alex - name listed on receipt plus another man - very helpful and insightful. This was my first time. Will definitely take mom back as she got more cans to recycle.

Great place and Pricing. I would highly recommend them. Best around!!! I used to go to EMR(Northern Metal Recycling), and every time there was a different issue. Not to mention, Alter has better prices!!! I’ll be back again soon!!!

A worker on a forklift helped us out as soon as we came into the yard and asked where to go to drop our cans. And then the other items we had for recycling. Great service through the whole process. Thank you.

Was a good place to take your scrap metal but seriously the black guy don't know how to do his job or just plain lazy....
Didn't want to sort out my scrap metal and just put all of my scrap metal as aluminum breakage at 5 cent a pound....!?!?! Never going back there from now on.... Going to Metro Metals recycling from now on....
Seems to always have the best prices especially copper prices friendly trustworthy staff with great management "Bob & Doug" I'm at alter several times a week
It is my favorite scrapyard to go to I drive the extra miles because I like this one the best the people are nice the pay is good and it is a good environment
They give you a credit card instead of cash and don’t tell you that it expires and you wind up with nothing for the metal you brought in. Read the fine print very carefully!
