Went here for a company crawfish boil and i was blown away by how amazing this place is. Staff was super helpful in set up and breakdown and the facilitation of events. The Pavillion was clean and open air with fans keeping a breeze going. The day went off without a hitch
We stopped by for a tour, but the lady at the gift shop told us they only have guided tours, and there were none available. You can walk around the outside but you can't see anything through the windows. Just glad we hadn't made a special trip to see the plantation.
Dropped by on a Sunday evening to visit the nearby Veterans park and walked over to the Plantation. Beautiful home, currently decorated for Christmas. Walked around the home taking photos. Did not visit the inside due to being closed.
Our guide gave us a very thorough room by room tour of the mansion. Several of the rooms are more like local history museums than recreations of the original plantation rooms. They have done a very good job of restoring the buildings after hurricane Ida.
The Southdown Plantation hosts many events. My too favorite are A Roux for a Reason and The Arts and Craft festival hosted twice a year! Parking is always good, but the walk from the car to the festivities is a little long. If you happen to attend something at the plantation, be sure to eat the food. The food and music are always what keeps me coming back.
A Refreshing Change from the Tired Regional Plantation Circuit
Tired of the same-ole, same-ole Louisiana plantation tour? The head to Terrebonne Parish and check out the Southdown. First, the grand plantation house is dissimilar in design and structure than all its neighbors: built entirely in brick and in a style more a Norman castle with Victorian embelishments. The pink color? Well, there's a practicsl reason for that. But the focus of the site is more on the history of the parish than plantation life, slavery, and hoop skirts: the museum includes topical rooms on local native culture, the career of a Louisiana senator, local artists, and so forth. Our guide was thorough, knowledgeable, and oh so friendly. Check their calendar for additional events: lots planned for an interesting one-day escape from NOLA's Fench Quarter.
I visited the plantation on a Monday, traditionally not a busy day for tours. I was welcomed and provided a tour that was informative and exciting. I was the only one on the tour at that time and felt like a VIP. Things I was interested in I was allowed to spend more time looking and things I wasn't so interested in I was given the short version of the story. Great tour and my guide was knowledgeable and friendly. I'd go again to see and hear about it's history. I know every time I learn something new or am reminded of something I had forgotten.
Cozy little store located behind Southdown Plantation for everything louisiana. History books, stuffed armadillos and sheep. Jewelry, plates, gumbo spoons. Holiday decor. And the nicest people working here. Very welcoming and outgoing.
Monday was a great day to immerse ourselves in Southern Louisiana culture, thanks to gift shop manager/tour guide, Lee Landry. His knowledge of the property, the buildings and the way of life in this area of The South, gave us a greater understanding of what plantation life would have been like. The gift shop was also delightful with its wide assortment of books from the Cajun twist on a few children's classics to the first hand accounts of life in The Bayou. Thankyou Lee for your personal recommendations. He is truly passionate about the story and the land and a firm believer in preserving the past so that future generations have a better understanding of where things are today. Thankyou for your time and energy on one of our favorite tours in Louisiana!

A great historical place to visit. They have interesting things to share of its past history and of the people who once lived there. Each room has its own part of history for anyone whom wishes to see. My favorite rooms would have to be the natives room and the mardi grass room. They even have a gift shop for those who like to collect on their travels.
Great experience.. They need to really show the entire house. The kitchen, the added on portion where the children live as well as the upstairs of the labor workers house. We also should have been able to go to the front of the home to check pictures of the house. The guide was good and she was able to answer majority of questions.
Our tour guide Helen was extremely knowledgeable about everything in the house and on the grounds. She was able to talk about anything we had questions about or expressed interest in. The house has artifacts not only from its own history but from the area's history. The slave quarters at the entrance is supposedly haunted, but that portion is self-guided. It would have been cool to know the ghost stories. The gift shop is also very nice. I wanted a themed snowglobe for a gift, but they focus more on the culture of Louisiana than just self-promotion.
They nickle and dime you to death. A sure way to run people away from the craft fair is to charge an entry fee. And what do you get for that? A chance to spend more money.
Went to the craft fair. Had a really nice time. We didn't eat at the fair but we did go to every booth of vendors! Lots of variety and very reasonable prices!
The tour is $15/each for college students and Ed was the best guide ever ! Was worth every penny ! I learned so much from him because he use to live there as a young child! Not only do you learn the history of the plantation but you learn about the wider world events that shaped the plantation! Oh yea you get to see a real shrunken head !
We were short on time.. So this was the closest plantation house to us.. It did not disappoint. The tour guide was great and he didn't rush us through. We got a privaye tour and really enjoyed it. Def. Stop by!

Dear readers, this old plantation is a one of a kind! My father and I spend several hours enjoying the tour given by Ed our guide. A little about Ed, he lived in the house as a young man in his youth before the place became a museum and is a wealth of knowledge of it's past. Ed is a youthful 86 and has stories of the house, different items in the house and of the people of the area. Each room is dedicated to something different in the past. The musical machine at the base of the stairs, the gorgeous tiffany stained glass, the beautiful artistic ceramics, the Spanish bedroom, the Senator's office, are but a few of the items to see, don't miss the Beautiful Houma Indian exhibit. Give yourself time, and Ed will really make it worth your time with his stories, and you can congratulate him, he is a great grandpa again. Thanks Ed for a great tour that certainly made my day!
