Very nice Amish owned and operated store. Large selection of a lot of different grocery goods, can buy in bulk. Also features sweets such as pies,saltwater taffy and fudge.
I try to get to Stringtown every time I go to Iowa City. I have family in-laws that left Cuba in the 1980s and they claim they have the best black beans since leaving there. Also great popcorn in bulk. Actually everything is pretty awesome!
Had not been here in a long time. It has grown so much since the last time I was here. Selection was huge, prices are very competitive. If I lived near here I would be there all the time spending money.
This place is a staple in our shopping routine. You cannot beat some of the bulk prices and the amazing taste of their spices. The flour and fresh produce are great.
Probably the priciest Amish place within a 3 hour radius (based on my 4 years of shopping this area). Today the check out girl was VERY rude and short tempered. The 1st unlikable Amish person I've ever met. Usually they are so kind! But not the tall, thin woman with the glasses. This was my 3rd time at this location but I won't be back. Would much rather give my money to nicer people.
I'm giving Stringtown Grocery a 5-star rating because of how well it serves so many people in our area. There are many specialty bulk items, and large 50-pound bags of flour, sugar, and other items needed by restaurants and bakeries. The store seems well-stocked and nicely organized. They don't accept credit cards or debit cards, so remember to bring cash or check. The lamps in the ceiling seem to be gas fueled similar to what is used for some camping lanterns. The automatic door uses what seems to be pneumatic air power for opening. As of May 2025, there is an impressive garden center outside with many plants and flowers.
Amazing bulk food store that also carries meat, dairy and produce. Incredible low prices on grains (esp my steel cut oats!), and I particularly love the variety of jams and preserves, and the spices! Definitely worth the trip!
Just made my annual trip to purchase a huge bag of popcorn kernels. Usually lasts about a year. Pops better than any other brand. Of course grabbed spices, pasta, and oatmeal. Cheeses and chocolate toffee covered pretzels. Love this place and the drive is so relaxing.
I love shopping here for all my spice and bulk dinner prep needs.
I even stop back to the cooler area to find treats like fresh cheese and sliced meat for an impromptu trunk picnic with the kids. Great prices for products I can trust.

Real live Amish grocery store with kerosene lights and air powered fans. Huge selection of cheese, spices, whole grains, flour and pasta. There are a lot of items you can find here and nowhere else. They also have a large selection of bulk items. in the cooler they have some great bargain items as well as gaylords of apples under a dollar a pound! I highly recommend stopping here and looking around as they have a lot of really neat things here!
Stringtown Grocery is a long time Staple in the Kalona area. A bulk shopping experience at which the products are nicely displayed, clearly organized, and VERY clean. There is a vast selection of the best of many things. Jams, pickles, spices, herbs, and extracts. Candy, nuts, and dried fruit, interesting teas. Locally baked breads, cookies and pies. Bulk natural peanut butter and fresh high quality olive oil. Noodles, varied flours for all baking needs, myriad diverse beans. Oatmeal, grits and granola. It goes on and on. Then duck into the cooler area for meat, produce, cheese and butter. In a lovely area just across the parking lot, there is a beautifully maintained and displayed gardening center. At this time of year (late April), there are many plants for vegetable gardens and bedding plants for flowers. I have been coming to this store for many years, having come to rely on it for stocking my pantry, plant some lovely flower pots, and find unique ingredients for creative cooking. Please be aware that there is a bit of road construction in this area as of April 2024. But honestly, where isn't there?

Bulk items in the grocery store. They only take cash or a check so be prepared. The produce building had reasonably priced veggies. Got 4 medium sized tomatoes for around d $2.50.
I frequent here almost weekly! The staff is helpful, they stock great hard-to-find merchandise like anniversary cards in addition to bulk spices, teas, deli counter, produce, canning supplies, and more! In the spring they fill the parking lot with hanging baskets. Fall it is filled with mums
One of the best dry goods stores I've visited. Bulk spices, flours, baking supplies, and candies plus cheeses, local meats, and local produce. Very busy on Saturdays.
Have enjoyed this Amish grocer for decades, both in their current and former locations. One can find very unique ingredients here, such as uncommon dried herbs. Great selection of spices, candy, baking mixes, grains, canning supplies, locally made goods, and cheese. Great for special diets. Wide and clean aisles and fair per pound pricing. Everything is simple and no nonsense, and personally I really appreciate that. Very highly recommended.
Probably the best Grocery Store I've ever been to, but I didn't like all the people swarming around me like flies on doodoo. They have everything you can think of and probably some things that you can't think of. Their prices ranged from very cheap to expensive, depending on what you want to buy. Their meat was kind of hard to find, but a guy showed me where the cooler was, and I was quite impressed. The meat looked great and was cheap (under $5 a pound for ribeye). I also found some cheese in that cooler that looked really good and it was super cheap. It was cheese shipped directly from some local cheese place in Wisconsin. I highly recommend this place.
