We had the chicken breast and wing it was extremely dry, hard to swallow and the skin was so hard to bite in to. They cooked it way to long and no flavor won't go back. Very over rated.
went there for lunch today with my husband and daughter. Had never been there before. Food was delicious and our waitress was awesome. Can't wait to go back.
We were there with group that filled the place. Supposed to famous for their chicken which I've had before. There's nothing like good fried chicken and this was NOTHING like good fried chicken. My first two pieces were barely warm and had grill marks which I assumed were from an attempt at warming the chicken. Our server brought two more pieces that were fried to long and had excessive hard batter plus the grill marks. I'm assuming on a good night the chicken is better but on this night it wasn't. I made comment at the register with no reply or adjustment to our bill. I doubt I'll go back to this establishment since Pizza Ranch has FAR better chicken.
It is the best chicken I have ever had! Juicy on the inside,Crispy on the outside. The coleslaw is also delicious . This place is a true gem in the middle of nowhere.
I’ve been hearing about this place and their chicken for a while…I ironically went there on a Tuesday for taco night. We were immediately greeted and welcomed. We loved the atmosphere and Andy Griffin playing on the TVs. Our server Sara was super nice, their bloody Mary’s were soooo yummy and the tacos were good as well. We will 100% be back for chicken night.
1st time trying their fried chicken. Breading was hard as a rock and couldn't eat but the chicken itself was good. Was kinda disappointed for all I've heard about the chicken there. Leftovers were good the next day and the skin softened. Willing to try it again.
You may not be ready for this fried chicken! Eating here will cause you to turn your nose up to all other fried chicken joints. Hot juicy chicken surrounded by the crunchiest batter in the world. It's perfectly wonderful everytime I go there. Don't try it... keep the other guys in business!

Chicken was as usual "banty hens"(small) very small pieces. Get twice as much as you think you can eat because portions are awful. It's good but not like it was 30 years ago.Are chickens shrinking ? Idk about other food. I'm a chicken fan.
Tacos on Tuesdays are great, Friday chicken is always delicious. ? The service can leave a bad taste in your mouth if you go while they are busy - it's a local staple, and tends to fill quickly and stay busy between 6PM and 10PM.
A SE Iowa staple. Chicken and salad bar are both phenomenal. Cold beer on tap. Appetizers are great. A back room for big groups. Service is excellent. Love going here!
I really enjoy coming here and eating their fried chicken! The atmosphere is fun and light with games to play. You can make it a dinner for 2 or a family night, the diversity is for everyone! The waitresses are so friendly and if you have question theyre very informative. While the chicken does take awhile to come out; you can appreciate the taste and freshness of it when you finally get to sink you teeth into the succulent and juicy chicken! Theres plenty of games and lots of music to choose from while you await for your order to arrive!
It had been years since my last visit to Mt Hamill Tap. The experience was just as I remembered. The chicken was great, cooked well, juicy and flavorful. It was a busy Saturday night. They are struggling with hiring servers like many right now, and service was rough because of this. I will be back. They also continue to carry cute t-shirts, with the same slogans from 25 years ago. Love how they stay true to who they are.
I love fried chicken!! I have had fried chicken at many other places that people have said I needed to try. After all that, I still much prefer the fried chicken here! I have not had a crunchy, great tasting batter anywhere else like I have here!!
Holy cow. Went there tonight and the service was the worst I have experienced anywhere. The wait was so long for everything and they failed to bring simple requests such as ranch dipping sauces. The waitress didn't seem to care at all. They served glasses with cracks in them, when asked they said they weren't allowed to throw them away...? The chicken isn't as good as everyone says it is either. The breading was very salty.
I know this place very well. I’ve always grown up with it my whole life until I moved away. The tap is a very special tap that serves the BEST meals ever!!!!! I fully 1000000% recommend this place to go eat out or to go to when you want to have fun!! The people and workers are very kind people and they take care of you like their own family. I have many many memories of this place and the town also. I wish I could take a trip to the tap and visit for a while this month!
The food was great, it did take awhile. We had an extra large group and didn't call ahead, the staff handled it great. The service and food quality more than make up for the wait. This is the most crisp chicken I have had to date.
Wait for food was long. I thought that the chicken was excellent and as an added bonus you can get all white, dark, or mixed. Served piping hot, nice crispy coating, juicy. Plenty of other options on the menu if you're not a fried chicken fanatic.
Best chicken I've ever had. It was extra crispy and juicy. It was a Friday night and it was pretty busy, but we were served rather quickly. I'd recommend this casual off the road tavern.
Wished I could give higher rank. First time there to try the chicken waited 1.5 hours and finally got our chicken after several large groups that came in after us. Not sure what happened. Chicken is batter breaded and would be good if a spice package and salt were added to it. A bit greasy. Very cheap so it's hard to be to rough on them but the best chicken in Iowa is a bit of an exaggeration.
If you’re in SE Iowa, this is a place you must find! It’s out in the middle of nowhere, but on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, they serve the most wonderful chicken around! It has a unique crust that I’ve not had anywhere else! It’s the place everyone has to hit when they’re home for a visit!
I live in Michigan and have family in IA. This is a "must stop" for me any time I'm back. Consistently the BEST fried chicken anywhere. The atmosphere is exactly what you should expect for the location - a perfect combination.
Local legend at a very good price, known for outstanding fried chicken. Don't be suprised by a two hour wait due to popularity, or slightly worn environment at the expense of tradition and overwhelming crowds.
I am absolutely not a fan of this place. My dad's girlfriend threw my dad a surprise party here last night. I drove my dad's friend(We live about an hour and a half away, so neither of us had ever been there.) and when we got there we stood at the door and were completely ignored(We were waiting to get someone's attention to find out if there were special tables reserved or something). After a few minutes I figured they must not mind if people seat themselves and that it would be faster if we sat down. So we sit, finally a waitress comes over and we explained we were there for the surprise party and asked if we were supposed to be in the back room. She said she knew there was a party back there but didn't know who had organised it or who it was for. Didn't offer to find out.
Since she was no help we went back there and there was a menu at each seat saying it was for my dad's birthday, so we relocated. The place was pretty busy and shortly after we relocated they started showing other people to the back room as well. Which was cool, there were only 4 tables that were clearly reserved for our party. As they started filling up a waitress came back and rather rudely informed us that she was going to have to start seating people at our reserved tables because she couldn't "just make people stand". Like it's somehow our fault that, even having prior notice that there would be a large gathering at their establishment, they failed to make proper arrangements for seating. By the end of the night our 4 reserved tables had turned into 2. We were all pretty much packed into the two tables and thankfully an entire family had been unable to show because of an emergency or we would've never fit.
On top of the unhelpful waitresses, rude waitresses and extremely overcrowded seating they took more than an hour and a half after we'd ordered our food to actually get it to us. And the food wasn't even that good. I had a grilled chicken, it was honestly kind of watery and gross. The fries that came with it were your standard crinkle cut frozen fries that come unseasoned from basically any generic food store. The buttered bread was a little stale. In no way was it worth waiting a freaking hour and a half for.
I don't know what my dad's girlfriend paid for the whole thing, but whatever she paid it was way too much. The only thing that saved the evening was that we had good company with us and that she had made her own desserts and brought them for everyone. Considering we had a large group of people and that most of them had never been there you'd think some tiny effort would've been made to get us to want to come back. Frankly, you couldn't pay me to go back there.
