Gateway Garden Center has very friendly staff and a good selection of North American native plants! They also sell supplies such as soil, compost, and organic pest control. Plants are well-labeled with their height, soil and sunlight requirements, and other info such as native status.
The best part was that the plants looked healthy and well taken care of. (The only ones that looked less healthy were in the discount section, and most of those were spring ephemerals that wither in the summer anyway--no fault of the staff!)
They had a 4th of July sale going on when I went, so keep that in mind if you go in the future. :)
The definition of great plants, people, and knowledge. Gateway is an absolute asset in the native plant movement. Far and away the best retail garden center in the area.
Prices are a little high, but they have an excellent selection af annuals, perennials, shrubs, and veggies, all arranged attractively and logically. They often have uncommon, interesting varieties.
The staff is very personable & willing to help. Unlike other many retail employees, they know a lot about the products on offer, and if they don't, they they will try to find someone who does!
I LOVE Gateway Garden Center! ?I travel from southern NJ to shop here. Gateway has a FABULOUS selection of plants, trees, water plants, birdbaths, etc. ALSO-the people who work there are extremely helpful. It’s a beautiful place?. I recently purchased 6 waterlilies-a few hardy, a few tropical. One hardy was a newer developed hardy waterlily that is purple. It is GORGOUS, big and prolific.
GATEWAY is an excellent place to buy native plants that will draw all kinds of IMPORTANT pollinators to your garden, your world???.

My husband and I have been purchasing plants and. Garden supplies at Gateway Garden Center for many years. The plants that they offer are very well cared for and healthy and many carry their guarantee. The people who work there are ALL very knowledgeable and always willing to help if you have a question or need ideas. I love to go there just to browse. Wonderful place.
I came here for the indoor plants, and I loved the variety that this garden center had- mature hoyas, thai constellation monstera, etc-, but I was devastated to see that the potential of these houseplants was understated by the lax pest control. Mealybugs, thrips, and spider mites on every plant, with many leaves being absolutely overrun by these pests. I'd understand if each plant had a few tiny bugs here and there, especially with the number of plants cared for, but having every single leaf have visible infestations is too much. I can't pay $276 for a thai constellation that will bring home an epidemic.
It makes me sad to write this review. Purchased a Chinese Money plant a couple weeks ago. I always isolate new plants when I bring them home until I'm certain there are no pests. The plant has thrips and thank goodness I didn't expose my collection of tropical plants to these pests. Just want to say...buyer beware.
My son and his partner, newly relocated to Wilmington, went to Gateway today and had a very unprofessional and disrespectful experience with a male staff member there. They told him they were novice gardeners and wanted help choosing some plants for their front garden, but because of their jobs they wouldn't be able to water twice a day. He told them they should put down plastic or cardboard, then he recommended silk (as it's natural).
They walked away and tried to choose some plants themselves. Eventually a woman came over to help; she recommended several annuals, but told them they couldn't put in any perennials at this time of year in the heat.
Although it's very hot, and not an optimal time to plant, there are many tough plants that will be fine with a once daily watering, including perennials such as lavender, Salvia, and penstemon, and some tough native shrubs.
What an unpleasant and disappointing experience for this couple who want start a garden in their new home!
What they don't know isn't worth knowing. They were a great help figuring out which shrubs would work best in my yard. Even better, they deliver, which for those of us with small cars is a godsend
Nice little garden center. Good selections, healthy plants and decent prices. Staff was helpful and kind. Parking was ok. I will return for future gardening needs.
There’s plenty of garden centers to choose from in northern Delaware. I’ve been to many. I’ve found Gateway to be a great resource for people who want to get a variety of plants and garden supplies. I also love the atmosphere and layout. The space creates a sensual experience lacking in other centers.
Some of you may think plants are plants. But not so. There’s a lot that goes into maintaining the health and beauty that flora and fauna provide us. Yes, you can go to the big boxes and get plants “cheaper,” but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Big Boxers also don’t have the variety and quantity of plants and resources offered here. If you don’t care, stick with them. Otherwise, visit Gateway and see if you’re mind is changed. Yes, it costs more. But there are costs to going for a lower price.
Enjoyed my visit today so much that I feel compelled to tell you how much fun I had touring the location and speaking with the employees. You have every right to be proud of your efforts. Everything was beautiful. Good luck and much success to all of you. This nursery is a treasure!
Last May we bought some bushes and over the winter several died. There is a 1 year warranty included on the receipt which was due to expire within the week. I emailed Gateway Gardens and Rich responded to my letter. Through several emails and exchange of information I was given store credit.
Today I went to Gateway and met Rich. Though very busy he did assist me with the exchange and gave some advice on new selection. He was polite and professional.
I highly recommend this garden center to anyone looking for products and/ or assistance.
Great selection of native plants. Items that I could not find at other places. Everything laid out intelligently so plants were easy to find. Lots of informative labelling. Everything well maintained. Staff super helpful and knowledgeable. My new "go to" source for my garden.
One of the ladies who worked there was very helpful. However, their prices are high. They do have an immense diversity of plants and flowers. My starts evaluation is purely base on their high prices. Other than that I recommend it since they do guarantee your plants. So if you have the budget this is a great place!
The best inventory of "native plants" friendly to the environment. High quality have been buying trees, bushes, annuals, perennials, etc. for many years. Staff extremely knowledgeable and helpful. It is the only garden center we patronize because we get value and plants that thrive. With Doris' assistance we have been able to establish a butterfly and hummingbird friendly garden that has blooming beauty from March to November.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, a huge variety of thriving plants, native species galore. Just a really well run business. Was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to buy 200 lbs of compost; they loaded into our car and everything. Will definitely be our go to garden center from now on.
What a pleasant surprise. There is an abundance of unusual trees, paints and planters. You are bound to find something for the garden that you can't find else where this season. I am definitely coming back.
I was really impressed with the selection. Moreover, I was impressed with their engagement with customers. I noticed several people getting good advice. After hunting through several other garden centers for a bay laurel I was finally able to find one here. Had I not found it they have a wish list that they consult when they place orders so you can get hard to find plants. This will be my first call from now on.
My husband and I recently visited this nursery and I did not enjoy my experience. I did not feel welcomed, we were not greeted and we were not asked if we needed help. I did not feel that the workers wanted to help us. When I asked where a specific section was located the first employee said “over there”. We then waited for an employee to come over and help us.
I then asked an employee about a plant issue and did not feel that he was very helpful at all.
I will not return to this nursery or spend money where I do not feel welcomed.

My wife and daughter took on the task of selecting our Christmas tree this year, prompting me to write this overdue review. Honestly the most beautiful tree we’ve ever purchased. Our tree is naturally shaped and full to the floor.

Excellant variety of plant materials, very knowledgeable staff. Great customer service and follow up. Even though it's not local for me, I always stop in to see what new plant varieties they offer, from perennials, herbs, shrubs, locals native varieties.
This is the best garden center in the Newark/Hockessin area, bar none. Huge variety of plants, knowledgeable and helpful staff, fair prices. We have a Certified Wildlife Habitat property, and they are a real partner for us in selecting plants that nurture wildlife, many of the native to the area. It is easy to get carried away with so many choices. Just remember, you have to plant what you buy.
