CarMax completely changed how I think about selling a car. Like most people, I always thought of CarMax as just a place to buy or trade in used cars. What I didn’t fully understand was how simple and transparent their appraisal process is. You can get an offer that’s valid for seven days, and the whole thing is incredibly straightforward.
After receiving a lowball trade-in offer from a dealer, we booked an appointment at CarMax so we’d have a real number in hand before heading to another dealership. When we arrived, Laura greeted us warmly, explained the process in minutes, and told us the appraisal would take about 30 minutes and that we could wait inside or browse the lot. We chose to walk the lot, and honestly, it was fun seeing such a wide range of cars all in one place. I also appreciated that every car has a posted price. No negotiating. The price is the price.
About 30 minutes later, Laura walked us through their findings and presented the offer. It was exactly what I had hoped for—25 percent higher than the first dealer’s offer. We took that appraisal to the next dealership. When trade-in discussions started, they offered more than the first dealer, but they still couldn’t match CarMax. We left with our new car and kept the old one.
The next day, we went to a CarMax location closer to home and sold the car. The process took about 30 minutes, and we walked out with a check in hand.

I'm extremely upset about the over the phone customer service I recieved from a guy named Roberto at the carmax on Lacieniga. I called tp speak to a particular person.....he called me back and said the reason im not getting a call is because who im calling for isn't my advisor. I proceeded to ask why are you calling me back he said because I am empowered to do so......huh what. I taking this all the way to the corporate office. Smh

I don’t write reviews and was hesitant about coming to carmax but overall it was a great experience. No haggling, I’ve never been to a dealership and saw what I wanted and got it. It was the fastest, most pleasant experience. Chris kamermayer helped me out, and he showed me the car and went straight to the bank. I walked out with Gap, and maxcare and don’t regret it all. It felt like talking to a friend than a dealership. I recommend Chris and carmax to anyone looking for a car.

The worst customer service. All these cars are LEMONS. Save time and money, go to Reputable Dealer. Nothing but fraudulent activity at any Car Max. Had my truck 12 months it has electric issues, won’t start, and whole host of other issues (more listed below) I’m getting the run around to fix with AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. Touchscreen malfunctions, zip ties on my seats, carpet and wires exposed, overheating these are just some of the issues. Forgot mention is only a 2023. Check out the pictures will add more shortly

Everything went well and the staff was helpful. I shopped around, went to other dealers and we got the best price here with no hassle.
The one star less is bc We ended up going twice since the car I sold was a lease and Carmax needed info from that company. Which would’ve been helpful to know before I booked the appointment and went (there was no info on that). Once at the location it took a few hours to finalize the transaction. My girlfriend and I arrived to sell our car. The overall service was great. Unfortunately we had an issue with the lien release and Lexus would not send us the proper document. Maria (business office) was extremely helpful and was willing to join a three way call with Lexus to get the document expedited. Thanks to Maria we got our call sold!

I’ve had my car for about a month now and wanted to leave a well-deserved review for Mr. Afshin at CarMax. From start to finish, he was professional, patient, and very helpful throughout the entire process. He took the time to answer all of my questions, explained everything clearly, and made the experience smooth and stress-free.

Very smooth experience. I appreciated being able to start the process online. When we arrived in person, there was only the verification and some final paperwork to do. I also liked the professional and easy-going atmosphere of the store. It felt like the CarMax staff was very competent and also humble.

My appointment was at 6 pm, I arrived at 5:50 pm to sell my car. I already got a carmax appraisal. It is 7:25 pm now and still no updates. What is the point of making an appointment if nobody helps you until late???

Horrible experience... Working a guy named Jorge. He was completely disinterested. I came to test drive a Honda Ridgeline. Dude didn't know anything about the vehicle. We got in to test drive and be couldn't get off the lot. Didn't bring the fob to get off the lot. Didn't engage with me whatsoever... I've purchased a rav years ago their... I called them to let the manager know how my experience was and some lady with an English accent went to get the manager and didn't come back to the phone.. I eventually hung up.. horrible experience.. I won't be going back... I really liked the Ridgeline they had... Cash buyer..

Is very clear the incompetence of inventory manager Mr. Hernan and the sales manager Mr.Tim to be call the big bosses. Why would they put a car for sale when they know is not for sale? They should be train better so they don’t make this kind of mistakes. Mr. Tim shows his nasty attitude towards potential customers by not greeting them or at least try to solve issues ! as per Mr.Tim is really Sad! As a person you are a shame and embarrassment for the dealer as well!!you are just not fit for this position. Work on your attitude! Do this world a favor.

So, very disappointed on July 29th 2025 I purchased or I should say financed, a 2018 Nissan murano., with approximately 75000 miles. I began to hear a loud ticking. Sound coming from under the hood, so I decided to take it back in to the service department on september 17th 2025. I was introduced to the service agent by the name of Jonathan who was going to take care of any needs that I had in regards to the car. I received a call from Jonathan September 18th, asking permission to take the car to the Nissan dealer which I agree on Monday september twenty
Second twenty twenty five i stopped by the service center to find out more information on what was going on with the car and I was told the car needed a new engine and they would kindly close out that deal and put me into a new vehicle at the moment I felt scared and afraid not knowing if I should purchase another vehicle from this company... What if I had gone over the 4000 mile warranty? So they encourage me to speak to the Service department manager and he seemed really friendly. But he's really big on putting me in another car. I have negative equity around about $3500. From another vehicle, I turned into them. I was told that they could repair the vehicle but not from the dealer, they would use their own vendor and and they're not going to replace it with a new engine They would just fix the engine which didn't make sense to me. So I asked, can we just close out the whole deal and we both go our separate ways. I was told no I needed to pay the $3500 instead of them clearing the amount owed because of them inconveniencing and stressing me out, wondering how I'm going to purchase a new car and stressed, because I don't want to be in a contract with this company.Because i'm afraid something else like this might happen since it's their mistake. I even reached out to the corporate office in Virginia.And they stated they wouldn't be able to override my negative equity of $3500 so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do I try to scramble up $3500 to give them just to get away from them or do I open up another contract? Not knowing what type of vehicle I'm going to get and yes, I do know that they are all used cars, but why are you all selling cars that needs new engines?Sep 30, 2025 -
The service center had excellent customer service, great communication and did great work on my car at a fair price. I will only be taking my car here for service. I love how they accommodate busy people by allowing customers to drop their car off after hours or before opening. My only recommendation would be to have the option to communicate with clients via text message.

I was quoted, By three Tesla, wanted to give me 15K, car max 19600, and carvanna 21 plus go to rover dealership.
Pristine 2018 Range Rover velar. staff was very friendly. No BS left with a check and a free ride from Lyft. Amazing. I'll be back to buy my second Tesla. After this crazy market settles down.

Avoid this place at all costs.
CarMax LAX tried to sell me a defective car with broken trunk and seat controls. Repairs were extremely slow, and they lied again and again, saying it would be done “in a day or two.” After more than 10 days, nothing was fixed.
They even told me the repair was finished and asked me to come pick it up. But when I arrived, the car was still not fixed, and they pushed me to buy it first and then get it repaired under the CarMax warranty. I wasted half a day because of their dishonesty.
During the repair delay, they also tried to use my rental car costs as leverage - pushing me to purchase first by promising they would provide another rental while the repairs were done. This was nothing more than a strategy to unload a faulty car onto me.
CarMax LAX will give you the worst buying experience. Don’t make the same mistake I did.Sep 16, 2025 -
If I could give carmax inglewood negative stars I would! Only 2 weeks after purchasing a car from them my car shut down on the freeway. Had it towed to carmax only for them to give me car back 2 weeks later and error messages come up on the dashboard. Take it back to carmax again! Only for them to sit with my car for over a month and claim the issue was fixed. 3 days after getting my car back that they claimed they fixed, my car won't even shift to park! Same issue as before that was never fixed. Of course I call the service department and crash out because why are they playing with me like this? Do they help? Absolutely not! Instead they tell me to contact aamco directly and the rep tells me they can't help me. I requested in email, writing, and verbally to be given copies of diagnostics, service orders, and service repairs and still i get nothing. Just a bunch of lies from the manager Bernard and the rep Jonathan. This is the absolute worst place to purchase a car today. They buy faulty cars and resell them with hopes that whatever quick fix they did will extend through the warranty period. They are only out for profit and have no morals when it comes to business. Run as fast as you can away from this place!

The only part of this experience that I enjoyed was the pre-approval even though that was drug out as well, the customer service in person and the service department team. Chris you are great!!!
To the point:
Got the car at 61,000 miles.
I had my car for one day and the check engine light came on, as well as other dashboard lights. I have had to take my car in a total of three times in less than 2 weeks. I would think I would be okay since I THANKFULLY got the maxcare. I am not happy outside of not having to pay a dime. Each visit was for the same issues after getting it “serviced”. I said screw it. Let me take this to Nissan. I called carmax inglewood business office to get my warranty policy number. I was told by Elizabeth I believe it was that it will take some time( what is that in an increment of time???) to locate my information. I was placed on hold for an hour and when she came back she didn’t even remember why I was put on hold and then put me back on hold to do what we discussed already before the hour wait. All I can say is that I am so glad I got maxcare because if I didn’t I would be in a financial hole already and it’s within 30 days of purchase. I have pictures for proof. DON'T BUY A CAR HERE. The car listed for sale showed an obvious sign of an electrical issue. The CarMax Los Angeles location near LAX misrepresented the cars options as loaded. They claim a thorough inspection and yet 50% of the car's lighting system failed and was inoperative. SEE PICTURES. The reps via chat burdened me call this store and then argued with me. They claimed a manager was notified which was untrue. CarMax to date has taken no action. They tell you what you want to hear. They make promises they can't keep.
I asked for an inspection report which was unavailable. Their rep Avery, in their Oregon call center, did not know and TOOK NO action or offered to send it.
I spoke with Phil in Customer Relations who was totally incompetent. At every turn, he was defensive and tried to spin CARMAX's false advertising. He told me their Feature Score was the number of options which was patently false. When confronted with this he did not apologize and continued with misdirection. The conversation turned contentious as he talked over me. It is in fact a score of 1-10. The problem is the score is a LIE. Is should be a 3 once I pulled the options using the VIN.
The conduct of CarMax is one of profound dishonesty, NO EVIDENCE OF INSPECTIONS or follow through. Looking into CarMax further shows allegations of the company failing to do inspections. See attachment.
UPDATE Oct 29: CarMax is the biggest time drain and the most unpleasant experience I've ever had to endure. Employees waste your time and insult your intelligence. You'll be placed into an endless loop of dysfunction and empty rhetoric that they are customer centric between their various departments. Their 'customer relations group' is uncooperative and does nothing. It has zero ability to solve any issues. They are nothing more than a data harvesting entity. This company treats people with such disdain. Their cars are $3,000-$4,000 over market with barely any money spent on reconditioning. DON'T JUST WALK AWAY. RUN!

The process didn't take as long as I expected and I didn't feel rushed into making a decision. My next vehicle will also be from CarMax.

It was a great experience visiting CarMax! I initially went in just to browse, knowing I was interested in getting a Tesla, and you guys had a few in stock. Jeffrey, I believe, was the one who helped me out. I had my mom with me, and since she’s Hispanic, she had a few questions of her own. Jeffrey, being bilingual, was able to answer all of her questions, which was a big plus. Overall, the service was excellent. I’ll definitely be coming back when it’s time to purchase vehicles for my kids!

I did everything online and when I did have to go in because an error on my end, I worked with Armando out of the LAX store. He is awesome. He kept me engaged, made small talk while I waited for them to wash my car. We had good laughs, it was the best car buying experience I have ever had. After it was ready, we went out and he explained everything about the car to me. How the hybrid charges and that it had eco as well as hybrid. He showed me how to program the car garage opener to my garage. I would definitely recommend CARMAX to my friends and family, and have them to request to work with Armando.

I am very satisfied with my recent experiences and purchase from Carmax. Purchased a 2013 Rx350 and the vehicle had to be shipped. The shipping process was timely and I was well informed of when the vehicle arrived and was ready to view. Went in on a Saturday morning and was able to complete my purchase within a few hours. Also did a trade in and was very happy at how smoothly that went as well. Had the vehicle examined by my mechanic and did find some items that needed attention. I brought those items to my sales consultant Godfrey's attention and a service appointment was scheduled. CarMax took care of all of the issues that were found excluding some normal maintenance items. Service was timely and quite thorough. Communication from start to finish has been fantastic and I would highly recommend CarMax to anyone looking for a vehicle. Yes. Their prices are perhaps a little more expensive than other dealerships. But with my very pleasant experience and the amount of repairs that were put in to my vehicle under their warranty it was well worth the additional price because of its great value. Highly recommended.

I'm editing my review after purchasing a car from CarMax over the weekend. When we first decided to look at CarMax (5 days ago) I was impressed with the number and options of cars they had in their inventory. As a matter of fact here's my previous review: "Soooo many cars! Lol. Really great options and prices and the service is wonderful, laid back with no hassles which is great for me. We had Devin as our sales person and he was great. All around good experience." That was day one. My husband wasn't impressed with Devin's sales tactics, which basically involved him talking you into dizziness, but I found him harmless, hence that previous review. Then we went back to get the car we thought we selected when we were notified that it arrived and we didn't notice until we got home that it wasn't the car we thought we were buying: long story short, we ended up with a Jeep Renegade Sport instead of the Latitude and he didn't bring this to our attention and rushed us through closing the sale. Also, the floor mats were replaced with cheap ill-fitting mats, no owner's manual, and a giant crack in one of the tail lights was glued together and tagged as "repaired" on the paperwork. Needless to say, we are not happy with our purchase or experience. I'm giving them 3 stars mainly for their inventory.
