Third Experience (May 2026) Total Cost $2111 + $700 for new torque converter/ Original Quote $1600 + $700 for new torque converter: Originally told to replace coil packs and they didn't feel shudder. Replaced packs, no change. Then, was told it was definitely shudder and a new torque converter was needed after supposedly installing an upgraded converter in Feb 2025 (see above)
Fourth, and final, Experience (June 2026) Total Cost: $700 / Original Quote $700: New torque converter did not fix the issue and I'm not sure it needed a new converter at all.
Here is why I'll not use this shop again: I have spent $10K here in less than a year and a half!
1. Communication. It's 99% by text message. So, if you want immediate answers to any questions you might have, they can leave you on text message hold as long as they want before answering and they usually leave you on this hold for quite a while. You have to request a call. Even then, it might take two or three days to receive that call, but not to worry. They will send you another text message each day saying that they are going to call you that day, but don't actually call.
2. The truck always seemed to leave their shop with a problem that it didn't have before it went in. Get a transmission rebuild only to need new mounts. You'd think they would let you know that your mounts are almost gone at the time of the transmission removal/replacement. If a plug was chipped and arcing, you'd think they'd be able to diagnose this also instead of letting me find it the hard way. They replaced the torque converter, but wouldn't show me TCC slip data to justify the replacement and made me order the torque converter myself after telling me that them ordering it would come with a markup on the price as "they cost of business". After replacing the converter, they state everything is fine only for it to be doing the exact same thing as when it went into the shop. Then, it needs plugs and wires which I had changed and gapped properly myself just 7 months prior.
3. They do and charge for things that you do not ask for. I was using an aftermarket tuner plugged into the OBD2 port to disable AFM. They took it upon themselves to tune it out while calibrating a new torque converter without permission at an additional $500 cost to me.
3. Their "techs" are young, inexperienced and seem to be more interested in working on/customizing their personal vehicles than anything else. My truck and other vehicles sat outside in the lot while their vehicles occupied shop stalls. I live a block away from the shop. So, I drive by it constantly and this was something I noticed very easily.
4. My wife has far less patience when it comes to these things than I do. She called the shop very upset about everything and how much this was costing us. She told me the receptionist, Dede, was very rude to her, and that they don't seem to care about getting return business. They definitely do not seem to be worried about getting return business, and they definitely will not be getting anymore of ours. I used the shop primarily for the convenience of its proximity to my home.
In short, I had a great first experience with Phoenix. I needed a quick-turn differential overhaul on my work truck. Allen took the job, communicated with me as needed, and got me back in service. There are fewer mechanics out there who know how to do this kind of work, so I was really put at ease with Allen's experience and communication. The work was neither cheap nor fast but time and cost were reasonable. I'm taking all my work to Phoenix from now on. Thanks, guys!
Amazing service! The owner is kind and for the ladies out there who have had issues with condescending mechanics in the area, I recommend this place to you. Also, there is a diagnostics fee. You should happily pay it because the service is worth the price! I know a lot about cars and used to work on them myself and not once did they try and tell me anything outside of what I suspected was wrong with my vehicle so you can trust my word on it girls!! Great place IMHO!
I have used this shop twice and they have taken care of the issues quickly both times. They have been able to get my vehicles in and repair them quickly while answering any questions I've had professionally and in detail. The prices are in line with any other shop in Madison but they get me in quicker than others.
I love the Phoenix Motors family. Allen and his crew will take care of you, and not try to sell you something you don't need. Solid work you can trust! I will always bring my cars in and look to Allen for car buying/repair advice.
I came from Ardmore to this shop and it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. I brought my older Camry there yesterday morning for a catalytic converter issue. I'm not the most mechanically inclined, I'm more of a computer guy but I try to know as much as any regular person should and it looks like I fell short. My car had some more pressing issues that I didn't even have a clue about. This was no problem though, Allen called me up after they took a look at my car and helped me understand the situation and kept me in the loop about what was going on. I have to come back next week for some more troubleshooting but it was ready the NEXT day. Talking to Allen on the phone and at the pick-up was extremely informative and he gave me some great advice. I'm 22 and I've had 2 beater cars so there's at least some weight to this but; I've never had this wonderful of an experience with a mechanic ever. I'll definitely rely on Phoenix Motors for all of my mechanical needs forever.
UPDATE: Moved to Madison and been going to this shop for several years now for maintenance and any repairs that pop up. They keep my old Camry kicking! Just got my oil changed first time this year and they take such good care of me. Allen is super knowledgeable, honest and such a pleasure to work with. Dee Dee, the techs and the other girls up front are just as awesome. Best shop I've been to, highly recommended.
I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. The staff and technicians are highly professional and CARE about me and the work they do. I can't say enough great things about Phoenix Motors.
I will always come back to Phoenix Motors for any work I need to be done on a vehicle. The staff is very knowledgeable and very courteous. I have never had a better experience with a mechanic in my entire time driving. They made sure to thoroughly inspect and check my concerns with the vehicle and they provided me with a quote that was very reasonable. They were honest and will have our business
Allen and his crew have always been helpful, worked to get things resolved as quickly as they could when I was on a time crunch. They may not be the cheapest but of the other places I’ve gone they’re the ones I feel I can trust to give it to me straight and not cut corners to line their pockets.
12.15.2025 ***update*** Every time I come back to Phoenix Motors I am more impressed. Another stellar performance by the team and family at Phoenix.
I had turned too tight with the trailer and knocked the exhaust off the hangers. Phoenix got the exhaust back on and straightened out the exhaust so they matched up again. Took some welding so expected a larger invoice. Nope, again a reasonable price for an excellent job.

If you want it done right at reasonable prices and reasonable times, this is the place. Been here several times and each time has us more convinced that these folks know what the heck they’re doing and we don’t worry that they’re out to gouge you.
They were super nice! So many times at different auto places, I feel like they tell me something just to get money out of me, but it was not this way at Pheonix Motors! They were honest with me about what was going on! This is where all of my business will go from now on!

The “owner” of Phoenix Motors, Allen Buchanan, is a foul human being along with his front office staff. They will gaslight you until you pull your hair out and go somewhere else with your car. He ran a “diagnosis scam” on me, charging me $165 for barely touching my vehicle and also $150 for a full-synthetic oil change is CRAZY WORK imo. I was given ZERO informed consent in regard to the costs of the oil change plus my diagnosis fee combined. My problems were: ZERO COMMUNICATION TO THE CUSTOMER INCORRECT ODOMETER ON INVOICE INCORRECT DIAGNOSIS ON INVOICE ALL STAFF ARE RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL THE OWNER REFUSED TO TELL ME HIS LAST NAME (ALLEN BUCHANAN) (But I found it on his biz card on his front desk) MY COOLANT RESERVOIR WAS DRY AND EMPTY PROFESSIONAL GASLIGHTERS My invoice was completely wrong with an odometer reading that was off by about 60K miles LESS than my actual odometer. When I asked about why the oil change was more expensive than any other shop I’ve ever been to, he and his office staff claimed it was “the cost of the oil.” But there’s one problem, they used Valvoline oil, not Mobil 1 or anything that would be expensive. It’s just a blatant lie, so he overcharges or labor, hoping that I’m too ignorant to know better. This is why I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND PHOENIX MOTORS! Save yourself a headache & $$$!!! MY wife called their shop to simply ask them to fix my invoice to show my correct odometer and also a correct sticker for my windshield to which Dee Dee replied with, “ummmmmm, NO!” The audacity of these people is crazy to me.
Absolutely an amazing Shop, they are patient with you and understand your frustration and where you may be financially. The level of communication is top tier. If you have a dodge, chrysler or jeep this shop is definitely for you. The mechanics here have more knowledge than any shop i have ever been too!
Allen did a great job on my truck, despite being a man down he made an effort and to communicate in a timely fashion. He caught things other shops did not, as well providing recommendations to keep my truck running. The prices were competitive and I had my truck back on Wednesday after dropping off on Monday.
I would like to share my recent experience with Phoenix Motors, located in Madison, AL.
I brought my 2018 Range Rover Velar in for an oil pan leak on July 7, 2025. I chose this shop because, according to their website, they are certified to work on Land Rover vehicles. I was assured by someone named Allen—who identified himself as the owner—that the vehicle would be ready in two to three days, with an out-the-door price of $1,750.
After about a week with no updates or communication, my husband and I went to check on the status of the vehicle. At that time, the car was on a lift in the shop, and we were told they were waiting on seals. However, no one mentioned any additional issues or damages—such as problems with the wheel hub assembly or other components—that I later discovered were no longer functioning, including the ABS brake system and other systems now showing error messages.
All of this came to light on July 18, 2025, when they finally informed us that the vehicle was ready—after repeatedly giving us inaccurate time estimates. When we were contacted, I asked the receptionist for the final cost. She said she would get back to me and, about 15 minutes later, sent a text saying the total was $2,287.87.
When we arrived to pick up the vehicle, my husband asked the owner why the price was $537 higher than the original quote. Allen responded that it was due to parts they had to order. However, we were never informed that we would be responsible for paying for parts that were damaged during their service. The owner eventually credited us approximately $200, but that still left the total well over $2,000—far beyond the quoted amount. There was no communication regarding these additional unexpected costs.
Customer service was poor throughout—from the front desk to the owner. After paying for the services, I went to my vehicle and immediately noticed multiple indicator lights flashing that were not present when I initially dropped it off. Additionally, the door handles no longer function properly, and my key fob no longer locks the doors.
My husband returned to speak with Allen about the vehicle’s condition. Allen printed out a list of diagnostic codes, but none of these issues were present or mentioned when we brought the car in. While the original oil leak may have been fixed, I now believe that more harm was done to the vehicle overall.
As a result, we are now forced to take the car to a certified dealership to address the issues caused by Phoenix Motors. There’s no telling how much more this will cost us. I feel Phoenix Motors was dishonest and unprofessional throughout this entire process, and I cannot recommend them based on our experience.
There was something really wrong with my car, and I was stuck and didn't know who to call. Phoenix Motors is right by my house, and their reviews were great. I called and the nicest lady got me in and my car was fixed in 2 days, where other places I've been to took over two weeks or more! Well I drove my car the next day and it was smoking! I just knew I blew up the motor. I panicked and call Allen. He said its going to be ok don't worry. This man called a wrecker service to get my car and he took time out of his busy day to come get me and took me home. A few hours later my car was in my driveway!! Come to find out it was a faulty fan. This is what you call top notch service!! Hands down! I'll be taking all my vehicles to Phoenix Motors from now on.. And a special thank you to the two ladies in the front office.
Took my 2019 Chevy Trax for diagnostics since it had eaten 4 tires on the front in 2 1/2 months. Pheonix Motors took the best care of my vehicle and myself. Better than any other shop I’ve ever been to. They will forever have my business with this vehicle and any vehicle I own in the future.
I had been taking all 3 vechiles to this place all seemed great until....I had to return the vechiles for the same thing it was took in for and there was always another problem that cost me more. Spent approximately 9 thousand dollars with this company and came away with more problems. Put water pump and timing chain in and 2 days later returned had to spend more money because i was told timing chain was bad from parts place. Added another bill for shifter phasers. Put a steering wheel clock in amd to this day it pops and grinds told them and they never fixed. The last thing I took my car in for was my heater it was not fixed nor did they get my authorization to fix it. But charged my $285 for putting in a thermostat. My car had to go back to them cause is was still doing the same thing and yet I was told they had to put another thermostat in ...still the same problem. Called several times no return call. Returned to the dealership for repairs to find out 1 of the problems that was wrong was the thermostat. Dealership they replaced it and my heater is fine now.
Previously I had highly recommended this company but Wish to recall my earlier post due to my multiple experiences.
My 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe had thrown two check engine light codes and the local dealership could not offer an appointment any sooner than December (two months away!) I found Phoenix Motors when doing a Google search for repair shops near me. The number of positive reviews prompted me to take the car to them. They took the car in immediately with the understanding that it could be a while before they could evaluate it. Within a couple of weeks, Allen had updated me on everything he was checking out and what he had found. Unfortunately for me it wound up being a timing chain replacement. Within the week of the final diagnosis, Allen and his team had me back up and running. It’s still a month until my appointment at the dealership. Allen was very straightforward about cost and gave me the option to not proceed if the cost was prohibitive. While a timing chain replacement is not a cheap repair (Google that…) it is still cheaper than a new car. I am very pleased with Allen and the crew at Phoenix Motors and will most certainly give them my automotive repair business going forward. Thanks guys!
Quality work at reasonable rates. Came in for rebuild rear-end, and waterleak. As new customer, they gave the inspection diagnosing. Realizing i needed front end work as well as waterpump and radiator, along with initial rebuild. They were able to squeeze me in a busy schedule and have everything completed within a week from initial quoted on rebuilding rear-end. Thanks for going above and beyond. Definitely found my new mechanics.
10/10 recommend for anyone looking for automotive services. The crew here is very professional, very knowledgeable, and very straight forward with you. I took my truck to them and they were very reasonable with price and got it back to me quickly with also going above and beyond diagnosing the issue. Will definitely be back for any vehicle needs!
I dropped my car off here on a Saturday with a ticking engine hoping for an easy fix. They kept me updated through the process and gave me a thorough diagnosis and pricing. They fixed everything that was wrong and I got it back within 5 days. Super fast and excellent service! The mechanics are very knowledgeable and friendly.

I’ve dealt with many shops in the area over the years, and have been screwed over, lied to and everything else by just about every one, besides Phoenix. Allen is a great mechanic and I will always recommend them over anyone else in the area. They do take a while to get your vehicle in, but that’s pretty much everywhere in the Huntsville area right now. It’s definitely worth the wait to do business with a trustworthy & reliable mechanic. He also always personally called me himself to tell me the issue and explained in detail what was wrong in a way that someone who knows nothing about vehicles would understand.
Allen (The owner) and his team did a absolutely phenomenal job. Everyone was incredibly kind! I am a young woman who doesn’t know much about cars and I always get so worried someone is going to try and pull one over on me and make me pay more than what I need to. Not only did he show me where the problems were he really explained the importance of them and why it could be causing the issues. He had me in and out of there within an hour and 30 minutes. Bonus I also didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for the amazing service provided. The guy was so nice he offered to teach me more cars, stating Me and my gal pals could come class and learn how to change my tire, oil etc…. I would REALLY RECOMMEND coming here! Really good people at Phoenix Motors! 11/10 would recommend!
I highly recommend Allen and his team. I have taken several different vehicles to him for different reasons. He has always done a great job. His staff makes you feel like a friend and not just another customer. As someone that has owned a repair shop in the past. I am confident in Allen and his team working on my vehicles. His prices are fair but more importantly the quality is there. Phoenix Motors is the only shop that I will use.
