What clients say about South Pass City State Historic Site in South Pass City (WY)

They've done a great job restoring the town and although I was there after the volunteer pioneers were gone for the season, there was good signage to learn about the original settlers and buildings. Thanking all who work to keep South Pass City alive!

It is so interesting learning about the History of our state of Wyoming. I try to take my grand children when I go to show them life wasn't easy as a pioneer.

If you love gold then you'll find the history of gold mining in this place interesting. Remote, high, and a serious challenge to the old time miners, the story here is one of boom and bust. It's still remote, so stepping back in time is a short walk... just a little imagination is all it takes.

Thank you to the young lady who stayed open to let us look in the gift shop and get a few things! Quick place to walk around and see some history, beautiful area and nice restrooms.

Beautiful location. We visited off season and it was closed. We walked partway down the street, but it was freezing windy and 22 out.

Cool buildings and great history and uncrowded. Good stop for history buffs.

Wanted to see an old ghost town on my trip and picked this one. Quite happy that I did. From the time you arrive it's as if you are transported back in time and are again in the old West. The atmosphere here brings to back to the days of old and you get a feel for what life must have been like for those that came here to make a life. The buildings are amazing, some lovingly restored and others in their natural state. All tell a story that will make you yearning for more. There is a nice gift shop here and markers throughout the site that tell the store of a once vibrant outpost that faded away as did so many towns on the frontier. Well worth a visit if you can stop by.

The lady in the gift shop was very nice. We had a very nice time here. Had the place to ourselves for most of the time. Checked out all the buildings and followed the walking guide. Panned for gold, were a little confused on how to do it at first, then we got the hang of it. Found lots of garnet but no gold. Next time! The buildings are super neat and interesting. There's a few hiking trails as well. We did the one that goes to the stamp mill. Tried some sarsaparilla- so good! Wish we would have came when the general store was open though.

Was really surprised arriving to see a huge abandoned mine as well as an old trading post before driving down to the cute refurbished town. You have to pay to tour the refurbished town (only if older than 18 or 19) Didn’t seem like harped on anyone for age or payment though. The refurbished town had preserved items and there was gold panning available for free right next to the river and bridge. After panning for about 30-45 minutes I did have small flecks of gold as well as rubys. There is a bathroom. Great place to take pictures.

This place was a hidden gem. So much cool history. Lots of things to see, just wish they did more tours

Wyoming's best kept secret! I spent most of a day there. Pay attention to detail, like all the "old" canned food in the store - carefully wrapped new cans with old labels! Amazing. And all the employees are really friendly. Great place....

This place is a great side trop to learn some history. We were able to go into most of the buildings. I highly recommend this place for all ages. It's probably about a 2 mile easy walk I'd that.

We did the South Pass drive and stopped to visit this location. The old town has a section of old building that you can tour for a price. We walked the free 1.7 mile hiking path around mining homesteads and ruins. Interesting.

South Pass City is a restored or revived Old West mining town located between Lander and Farson, Wyoming. The South Pass was a pathway to the West through the Rocky Mountains for many groups. While traveling through the area, travellers panned for gold and eventually struck a vein. A non-profit organization has restored, renovated or rebuilt a slice of those Wyoming gold rush days, with indoor and outdoor displays presenting life in this region. A mine and its mill machinery are available for hands-on visits, as well as homes, businesses, Churches, saloons, and so on are available for self-guided tours with a handy guidebook available at the gift shop. Many regional and historical books are available as are items for young and old. Located at more than 6,500 feet in elevation, the best time to visit is in Summer. It's located West of Lander, Wyoming, the nearest nearby full service center. If you're interested in mining, Westward migration, or mid- to late-1800s history, South Pass City in Wyoming is a great place to visit. Atlantic City is nearby, too!

Nicely reconstructed ghost town with opportunities to experience the ways of old. I've wanted to visit for many years and finally had an opportunity.

It was hard to bring ourselves to pay the entry fee because it didn't look like there was much to see but once we got walking through the town, there was much more than we thought. We spent hours there and would have stayed longer if we had time. It was very interesting and informative!

I loved this town of replicas and mines. I wish we could have gone thru the Carissa Mine but didn't have an appointment. This is a wonderful old town with a lot of history. The town comes to life as you walk thru to look at the houses, saloons, mine shafts, and pictures of people on the walls. The hotel was my favorite with a very narrow and creaky staircase with small rooms and decor to represent the era. I took a lot more pictures but hopefully this will make you want to go see it. They are only open during certain times of the year so check that. While you're there go check out Atlantic City, WY only 4 dusty miles away. It's another really amazing mining town. Go in the Merc./ Saloon/ Diner. It's amazing.

A fun stop, a small gift shop. The gravel road is about a mile and a half and steep at times, take it slow and easy. We made it fine in our large transit van. Worth making the stop if nearby.

This quiet little ghost town site was a favorite stop along our trip. Our entire family really enjoyed it! There are several buildings which you can enter in to and are setup as if they were stuck in time. Really well done historic site.

South Pass City is great for history buffs who want to get away from crowds. This is a former gold mining town where they have restored 20+ buildings to how they were between 1860 and 1946. South Pass City is reached from gravel roads. Historic buildings and short hikes, are all there is South Pass City. No restaurants and no crowds.

They have worked to restore this amazing part of Wyoming history. There is significant value in the growth of Wyoming steeped in this historic sight. Thank you for preserving and telling the history of Wyoming.

Such a fun place to see how life was in the past! You can pan for gold by the creek. We found a small amount along with some garnetts. Highly recommend stopping. It's also not far from the main road and easily accessible.

This place is SO MUCH FUN. We were there for hours. You can go into the homes, shops, cantinas, a jail, and even a hotel from the 1800's and really get a feel for what daily life might have been like. There is also a mine shaft you can walk into and see the mine cart still sitting in there.

We enjoyed walking the loop trail and seeing/learning about the equipment that was used to extract the gold. We then spent a lot of time wandering around the ghost town buildings. Very cool. Our only regret is that we didn't get a chance to tour the old Carissa mine. Tours are only conducted a few days a week so check the website for the info.
