Great place to go if you want to get away for a few days over a long weekend. Food is fantastic and every place that we tried. The higher-end rooms can tend to get very pricey but if you prefer privacy, the value is worth the cost.

This is not a 5 star hotel. It’s pretty run down. I was there with my family so we had 4 rooms for all of us. There were issues in every room - mini fridges didn’t work, water pressure was bad, sinks clogged, shower head didn’t work properly, and more. You can also hear everything all night - toilets flushing, Water running, the train going by blowing its horn 3-4 times/night, loud ac unit. The elevators and paint on the walls are just not kept up with well. The decor is extremely outdated. We referenced “the shining” several times. Everything was also SO expensive. The only positive review from me would be the casino was pretty nice. I don’t recommend this hotel until they dump a ton of money into it.

My daughters and I enjoyed a two night stay. The older Dorothy Draper designs were gorgeous. The newer decor was very gaudy and harsh. We enjoyed the resort and the complimentary activities. The pool is a work of art. I was saddened to see the Greenbrier in such a bad state of ill repair. The architecture and older Dorothy Draper design elements were well worth the visit. Our room was surprisingly disappointing. It was comparable to a rundown cheap motel. Linens were not clean, bottom bed sheet didn’t cover a foot of the mattress! Too much to go into detail. Reviews by other people covered similar issues.

We love the Greenbrier. Great staff, food, and activities. I definitely recommend the gun club and falconry for some fun, then shop around artist row, gamble at the casino, and enjoy a fabulous dinner in the main dining room.

Gave a $250 gift certificate to my partner in Dec. 2020 (in the midst of Covid). He decided to use the certificate for my 65th birthday dinner in the Main Dining Hall Feb. 2026, but, it was declined. They said it expired after 5 years? WHHAATTTT. Humiliating and tainted our entire dinner experience. The card had no expiration date printed on it. When it was purchased I was not told it would expire. Why would I purchase a gift card that expired? I'd rather give someone cash or a check that doesn't expire. They seated us at a table next to young kids on what was supposed to be a romantic evening. So, our dinner, with very poor service, had to ask for water refills 2x and no recognition by the servers of my birthday, cost use almost $500.00 due to the loss of the $250.00 certificate. This is just obnoxious. And, they could have honored it since it was only 6 weeks over the date and we couldn't use it for over a year due to Covid, then the snow storms earlier in the year. Thus the evening was ruined. I doubt I'll ever return there. I used to ove it. Now, I'm pissed. If that is how they make money by denying gift cards because people didn't save the stupid cardboard that wrapped around the card that apparently says it expires, than they are not worthy of my patronage nor that of my friends. It's a total ripoff.

I grew up with my family visiting the Greenbrier and have been here many times over the years. It has been really sad to watch the decline in just about everything. I stayed for new years this year to propose to my now fiance. The room we checked into had stains all over the carpet and furniture and the bathroom was dirty and the shower would not drain. It was so filthy we did not sleep in the bed. I Pleaded to have a new room, and they did move us into one of their nicest rooms however that room was also dirty and stained just not as bad. The food was pretty decent, but service was average at best. Employees were cursing at eachother on multiple occasions as it seemed they were not trained or they were overworked. We thought it would be a good idea to explore so we went to the arcade where none of the games worked and the machine ate $40. The staff said we just had to submit an inquiry to the gaming company and they would not issue a refund. It honestly became a little bit of a joke at that point. The hotel is in bad need of new infrastructure which begs the question where the absurd upcharge through historical preservation fee is going… this resort belongs in the class of Ramada and Red Roof, not the Breakers Palm Beach and other 5 star resorts. It got two stars from me just because we have been there so many times. It’s time to sell to a Resort company that will take care of you Greenbrier!!

This was from an email sent to PR at Rhe Greenbrier weeks ago with no response— am writing to formally express our disappointment with the dining experience during our stay at The Greenbrier from December 19–21, 2025. Given the reputation of the resort and the premium price points for both accommodations and dining, the issues we encountered were unacceptable. Our daughter is vegan, and on December 19 my wife spoke with the main dining room chef on three separate occasions. Each time, she was assured that a thoughtful vegan option would be prepared for dinner. We arrived earlier in the day and for lunch at Draper's the only option for my daughter is an impossible burger which was delicious. For dinner, despite these assurances, the only vegan option provided was another Beyond Burger. After raising concerns, a vegan menu item was eventually brought out, but it was served cold. In addition to the food issues, our interaction with our waitress, Dawn, was troubling. She questioned our daughter about being vegan in a manner that felt inappropriate and unprofessional. She also appeared offended when my husband ordered a beer, commenting, “I do not drink alcohol.” Both remarks were entirely out of place and made us uncomfortable. The following morning at breakfast, we met the floor manager, Kathy Shelton, who was excellent. Kathy ensured that proper vegan breakfast options were available, and the food that morning was outstanding. Unfortunately, this was the exception rather than the rule. We experienced similar problems with limited and inadequate vegan meal options at the Forum Restaurant on Saturday night, as well as again at breakfast on December 21. We chose The Greenbrier expecting a high level of service, attention to guest needs, and culinary excellence. Unfortunately, the repeated failures to accommodate a clearly communicated dietary requirement, combined with inappropriate staff comments, significantly detracted from our stay. Overall, we were very disappointed with the food experience.

This place is so incredibly unique and beautiful! My family and I always have an blast when we visit and will come back several times over the years. The staff is so accommodating! Love the Greenbrier!

We enjoyed our stay at The Greenbrier overall and appreciated how many amenities, activities, and dining options are available right on the property. The Christmas decorations were especially beautiful and added a lot to the experience. We also loved the daily complimentary coffee in the mornings and tea in the afternoons in the upper lobby — a very nice touch. The paid bunker tour was absolutely a standout experience. Our guide, Richard, was fantastic — knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the history. That alone was a highlight of our trip. That said, I do feel it’s important to mention some noticeable downsides. The overall upkeep of the hotel rooms and common areas was disappointing for a resort of this caliber. Water damage, water staining, and peeling paint were visible in many areas throughout the property, including in rooms that were described as recently refurbished. Compared to other similar historic luxury resorts in Virginia, The Greenbrier is in clear need of an overhaul in these areas. Additionally, the level of service was inconsistent and, at times, surprisingly poor. During our four-day stay, we encountered multiple servers who were blatantly rude, inattentive, or neglectful. This was shocking given the scale and reputation of the resort and made some dining experiences uncomfortable. We had to involve management on more than one occasion due to server attitude or lack of attention to detail. The Greenbrier has so much potential and history, and while there were many enjoyable aspects of our stay, the maintenance issues and inconsistent service detracted from what should have been a truly exceptional experience. I also want to note that I am allergic to mold and mildew, and I had a very difficult time during our stay due to significant flare-ups of my symptoms. This further reinforced the impression that there may be more extensive underlying moisture or water-damage issues throughout the property. For guests with similar sensitivities, this could be an important consideration.

Probably wondering why I gave room, service, and location five stars and overall two. It’s because those things deserve it. The hotel itself was everything I expected and more. What killed it for me was the food I made reservations at The Main Dining, Prime 44, and The Forum, the three most expensive restaurants that were open at the time of my visit. All of these are easily $150 per person without drinks so I was expecting amazing food. The Main Dining and Prime 44 were just. I would not eat what I ordered at the Forum. I love food and when I travel I make it part of the planning. This absolutely killed the trip for me. They’re using the fact that there’s nowhere else really to go to serve mediocre food and call it high-end. If you decide to come just pick up sandwiches at a couple of the little shops or try to find something in the nearby town. Fast food would’ve served the same purpose for me at a fraction of the cost

The service was incredible. The food was one of the best I ate in a whole year. Everyone was very kind. But, the location is horrible. This hotel is away from every big city and there are not a lot ways to get here if you don't have a car. I think everything is so good that the pros outweigh the cons but you can be the judge of that.

we have been here a few other times and this time there was a noticeable decline in service and quality of food. We had a great meal at Drapers but not good service. The prime steak house and Sam Sneads were not good at all and wished we had just ordered pizza. The breakfast buffet may have looked nice but it was the same breakfast potato’s, bacon, sausage, eggs you find at a residence inn. Simply put, lipstick on a pig with a grander presentation. Our room was nice but you could feel the two body dips in mattress and the phone had some crud in the cradle. Overall there are much better places with better trained staff and much better food. Worth going once from the historic perspective but for us, it was our last time. The building may have the old world grandeur but the magic is gone except for a few old timers still working there and the new ones…well, they just mimic what they are told but ….it comes off flat.

Booked a Christmas package that said $100 resort credit and free breakfast each morning. Arrived and no greeting at all. Went in to check in and couldn’t find check in. Finally got someone to tell me in down the steps and to the left. Checked in and we had reserved a cottage. No help finding it. Drove around 10 minutes and finally located it. Not marked clearly at all. The drive up to our cottage was blocked off so had to drag all the luggage about a 100 yards and then up about 20 steps. No offer to help. Got in cottage and there’s an old pair of sweat pants just laying there. We had to check to make sure no one was there. Them found old leftover food in fridge. We brought it to managements attention and it was like “oh well, sorry”. We sat it outside door and was still there when we checked out 2 days later. Every time we wanted to go eat we had to call shuttle. Sometimes they showed up, sometimes they didn’t. Food and everything is already very high priced and then they add 10% Historical preservation fund on and another 20% gratuity (probably have to add it since service is bad). Got all the dinner reservations mixed up so had to just take what we could get. If you ask for help, just forget it. One person tells you one thing, another person tells you another. Then we check out and no $100 credit and we’ve been charged $128 each day for breakfast for 2. Cold eggs and Luke warm coffee. When we asked why we didn’t get the credit they stated “you didn’t book it so you’re not getting it. Just awful customer service. I got a better reception when I walked into the Loves Truck stop getting gas and the rest room was cleaner than our room. Wished I could’ve rated even worse but nothing lower than 1 star.

We visited the resort in December, and wow! The decor was simply amazing. And the service… top notch across the board. Our room still looked like it came out of another era, quaint, which we loved. We took a couple of tours and joined two events, which were entertaining. So five stars. Unfortunately, pretty much across the board, the resort food was “okay” at best, actually bad at some points. We dined ant Infusion, the main bar, breakfast in the main dining room, Prime 44, Twelve Oaks, and Draper’s. We were just incredibly disappointed. The food is pricy and not at all worth it. At infusion we ordered sushi… sadly, it was incredibly bland. The main bar food, we are quite certain, was frozen food microwave warmed. (If not, that’s how it tasted, so not good.) The breakfast buffet was expensive and uninspired. There was no signature food item… just the typical eggs, meats, and such. The pastries appeared to be store bought. For the price one would expect more, eg: a prime rib carvery, etc. Draper’s was “fine”. Interesting options, but unfortunately they were overall quite bland. The best meal we had was at Prime 44; however, it was not exceptional. We ordered filet, two sides, and two drinks… which cost us $350. If the food had been stunning, I would not be so disappointed; however, again, it was “fine”. Food gets one star, for the average of 3.

You can tell in its heyday that this resort was once grand. Unfortunately, this trip left a lot to be desired. Carpeting was stained and torn, upholstery was stained, there were cracks throughout the bathroom ceiling and walls, the wallpaper was peeling, and both the sink and shower did not drain properly in our room. Throughout the resort the furniture is stained, and the carpeting contains lumps and runners. The hallways to the rooms are dingy and poorly lit. I actually tripped on a lump in the carpet in the hallway. My glassware and silverware was filthy dirty in the concierge suite area. We waited 2 hours for room service. My steak was not seasoned at the steakhouse. Also, there is not much to do for younger children. Even the teddy bear mountain at the toy store was out of order. Omni or a hotel chain that specializes in historic properties needs to buy this resort and return it to its former glory. The only positive comment I have is that the staff was very kind and helpful.

My family and I went to The Greenbrier for Thanksgiving and had a wonderful time. There were a few mishaps but they were sorted out. The room was nice however when booking the reservation they did not disclose that the floor our rooms were on was pet friendly. This caused some issues because some of our family had pet allergies and another other had to exchange their room due to non stop pet noises throughout the night. The rest of the experience went pretty well and was very enjoyable. The thanksgiving buffet was lovely and had many options to choose from. The following day we had the option to dine at the gala buffet which was the same price as the Thanksgiving buffet. We expected that it would be similar to the other meal in terms of atmosphere however it was not what we expected. There were fewer options for food and it seemed more like a kids party with the upbeat music and balloons stand. We ended up dining elsewhere because we didn't expect that from the Gala Buffet since that wasn't how it was described to us. The following days we engaged with some of the many experiences available to us. We did the bunker tours, escape room, gun club, and more. All of these experiences were great and went without problem.

We didn't stay there. We just went to checkout their Christmas displays! This enormous hotel has more than we could have imagined! Shops on the main floor. A few different restaurants, an indoor Olympic size pool (an outdoor one as well), a 8 lane bowling alley, a seasonal outdoor skating rink, a spa, a salon, a casino, it's own on the ground church and a golf course! Other activities they offer include carriage rides, skeet shootings, biking riding, 4-wheeling and horseback back riding! We were so impressed, we are thinking of stay for a day or two.

The Greenbrier Resort has always been my favorite resort until this past visit. Our room had several stains on the carpet as well as peeling wallpaper. We did complain the next day and we’re given an upgrade to another room. This was nice, but we had to pack up everything and move. A heads-up, Guests are charged for every bottle of water… when you pay the price you pay for a room, you would expect free bottled water or at the very least a complementary reusable bottle in the room. Another problem is that I am gluten-free due to a medical condition and the gourmet Coffee shop didn’t offer any gluten-free muffins which was disappointing. I love dogs, but recently they have allowed pets at the Greenbrier and there were dogs laying on the couches by the fire… taking up spaces for paying guests to sit. I understand this is not the Greenbrier‘s fault… more of the owners poor judgement. It just wasn’t as luxurious as it has been in the past… It’s unfortunate…

The Bunker tour was interesting but probably not worth the price for other than the well-heeled people staying at the resort. The hotel is stunning. We were just passing through. I'd love to come back and take plenty of time roaming the halls and checking out the displays.

Y’all if Laura Ashley meets Grey Gardens is your jam then this is the place for you. Calling this a resort is beyond generous and seriously violates the definition of resort: in our room alone there is stained carpeting, stained bathroom tile and tub, noisy, inefficient heating and cooling. The elevator interiors have see a better day as has the rest of the dingy furniture and decor. Not even holiday decorations can elevate this. And please add some helpful directional signs everywhere to help guests navigate the maze since the property is understaffed with folks who seem to not really want to be helpful.

What an wonderous experience is visiting The Greenbrier. We visited with a group. Decorations were magical. The whole experience is worth every penny. HOWEVER, my meal on November 21, 2025, at Drapers was pitiful. I had The Reuben, which, besides the natural salt of the beef, this was so salty, I couldn't finish eating it. The twice baked potato was cold. One member of our party returned her fries because they were cold. We had a large party and we were divided into sittings of 8, which put us in the precarious position of paying 22% gratuity. In my opinion, the 22% rule put us in the position of getting no service since that 22% is automatically charged. When the server took my plate, I told her how salty my food was and how cold the potato was, she told me, "I wish you would have told me before. I. That was not possible, since she did not check on us, except when she refilled water while waiting for our food. Lastly, I requested for my drink water with lemon, which I never received. After looking forward, in expectation, for the best food in WV, we were disappointed .It was very busy because of the basketball tournament, but nevertheless, the food should have been excellent.

We came for the bunker tour, fascinating, no pictures - worth it, but the hotel itself was stunning. My prior job had me in some of the most beautiful hotels in the world, but this hotel just floored me. With everything going minimalistic this just spoke to my opulent side. They have all kinds of things going on during the holiday season. I really wanted to move from Vanlife to Hotellife for the season!!

What can you say about the Greenbrier but... Wow! First the good news: From my experience, it's not uncommon when staying in a world renowned hotel's "standard" room that you end up disappointed with your stay. That wasn't my experience with the Greenbrier. If you're a person who loves to travel and experience truly exceptional/one-of-a-kind location the Greenbrier has to be on your list. The location is incredibly beautiful, the hotel and the grounds (while old) are immaculately maintained. The hotel's restaurants are wonderful, and the service throughout the resort is over-the-top. Also, the rooms (at least our room) are excellent. In addition, there are a long list of activities available for adults, children & families (such as: hiking, golf, casino, yoga, biking, fishing, horseback riding, bowling, geocaching, croquet, falconry, bunker tour, etc. etc. etc.). - Now the bad news: The Greenbrier is NOT CHEAP!! While you might be able to get a room during a slow period for a reasonable price (by Greenbrier standards) there are numerous added fees (resort fee, historic restoration fee, occ. tax, sales tax, valet parking, etc.) that are charged PER NIGHT. And, the excellent onsite restaurants are very expensive, as are any of the activities you might sign up for. So, it's easy to run up a large bill. In fact, if you read many of the negative reviews the hotel gets they frequently center around the fees charged and how much a stay costs. So the bottom line is, if you're someone who worries about spending money think twice before booking. If, however, you want a great experience and can afford it, this might be the place for you!

The grounds of this place are amazing. We enjoyed the fall outdoors very much. However, this place is way overpriced for the service and food if you are staying in the resort. They clearly put all their effort towards members and honestly dont seem to care much about just hotel guests. The whole experience is way overpriced for what it is. It prices itself as a high end resort but the rooms and service is not anywhere near that. The food is mediocre at best and I got sick one night from it. Everything is overpiced as is but then they add all these extra fees and even a liquor tax (despite the fact that restaurants outside dont hvae the tax). They also charge you crazy fees to cancel anything and EVERYTHING. When we arrived we heard a guest at registration trying to leave early (I now understand why) and they refused to allow her to not pay for the remaining night ($800). OK, that MAY be understandable at hotels but this is high end place. It was cold so we tried to cancel our outdoor jeep adventure and they refused since were within 24 hours (and they were not nice about it), and we tried to cancel a dinner reservation because their food MADE ME SICK the night before and they charges us $50 per person to cancel! I asked to speak to the manager and the crappy concierge guy said "there's no point, they will charge you to cancel too." again, this is an expensive plance, treat us better. We stayed at other high end resorts and as soon as you book a room, they call and ask to help schedule things. This place never called after we booked and seemed like we were bothering them when we called and tried to confirm a king bed and inquired about reservations. So disappointing.

Carpets were stained everywhere. Furniture in the lobbies were stained. Walls had dings and scuff marks all over them from luggage smacking the wall. The doormen didn't hold the door, so not sure why they were out front. Hotel security pulled me over because I didn't stop for them at the booth? When I pulled in, I stopped but no one came out to greet me and there were no lights on. They were incredibly rude about it. Furniture looked like I took a time machine to the 50s. Interesting, but not my cup of tea. I'd prefer to stay at the schoolhouse.

I was really excited to book this trip for my family. It turned out to be far from what we expected. The rooms are old and outdated. Floors are carpeted and dirty. We had a rollout bed brought to the room, the springs were coming through. There is visible mold in some of the ceiling corners of the hotel. My kids were really looking forward to watching the movie offered at the hotel and it didn’t work the two days we tried to go there. For the cost, it’s just not worth it. This resort is in need of serious renovation. The only positives were the carriage ride, walking grounds, and shuttle. The employees are very nice. I would not recommend nor come back.

My favorite place in the world. It is charming, luxurious, rich with history, the grounds are gorgeous, the staff makes you feel like you are right at home. The Greenbrier is my favorite destination in the United States. I will forever be vacationing at The Greenbrier, it is unparalleled and incredibly special. Rooms are lovely, decor is enchanting and there is a surplus of activities from pickleball to tennis to golf to horseback riding to skeet shooting to fly fishing. The Greenbrier reminds you what life is really about. Unwinding, spending quality time with people you love and being one with nature!

This is a long review but important. The Greenbrier is NOT handicapped friendly AT ALL. If you use a wheelchair to get around at all, do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. I booked a bunker tour for 3 adults, and when I booked I made it clear there was an adult in a wheelchair in our party. If you aren’t staying at The Greenbrier, you have to park across the street and walk to the hotel. This is not ideal for someone in a wheelchair, especially when we are trying to make a scheduled tour that requires us to be there at a certain time. I asked for a shuttle bus, they only have one shuttle bus that is equipped with a wheelchair lift. This shuttle was at the airport, so we ended up being late for our bunker tour. This delayed the tour, which other people also paid to go on, and they were delayed as well. Then when we were trying to leave after the tour, the shuttle that could take us back to our car was again at the airport. If you have never been here before, walking to the parking lot across the street from The Greenbrier is not a short walk. You have to walk through a good portion of the very large grounds of this hotel. I asked the shuttle driver if he could radio someone to ask if I could go get my vehicle, drive into the hotel grounds and pick up my aunt, who is in a wheelchair, and not wait for the shuttle. He told me to go speak to concierge. No one was at the concierge desk the entire time we were there. So I had to walk to the opposite side of the hotel and wait in line at another concierge desk. During this time, my mom somehow convinced a shuttle driver to radio security at the gate, so we could get permission to drive into the hotel grounds to pick up my aunt. Any ramps they have for wheelchairs at this facility are so steep that my aunt’s chair almost flipped over. Since we weren’t guests staying at the hotel, no one was very accommodating or helpful in resolving any of our issues.

Booked a suite for 3 people and there is one bathroom (person using pull out needs to come into our room), mattress in the pull out bed is FULL of springs and so uncomfortable. We had to pull the bed out ourselves and call housekeeping for pillows and comforters (had to call 3 times before someone answered) Dinner was good, but my meal had a large piece of plastic in it and the waiter (not his fault) did not know how to handle it. Espresso martini does not have actual espresso and presentation is horrible. They weren’t able to make 2 of their offered cocktails because they were out of the ingredients. Not worth $1200 a night.

This place claims to be a 5 star resort. Not even close to five stars. The grounds are lovely. The hotel itself was decorated by Dorothy Draper and then her protege decades ago. I happen to like the retro bold colors and patterns and it gives a cool vintage vibe. That’s in the common areas. Where they lost me was the rooms. I tried to tell myself that it goes with the theme to make myself feel better but that didn’t work. The rooms are nothing but dated. Stains on the bright GREEN carpet, shabby furniture, canoe like mattress, our mattress was so bad that we asked to charge rooms. The bed in the second room was better and the bathroom had been updated. Same old tired carpet but the furniture was not as scuffed. Chairs in the room may have been sat on by Eisenhower himself. I don’t feel dirty per se but also don’t feel entirely clean. We ate at two of the restaurants. Sam Snead at the golf course and Prime 44. Both were good. Prime 44 is a nicer updated restaurant and the service in both were excellent. Did the bunker tour and it was interesting. Tour guide Margaret was excellent. Before coming know on every single thing you do or purchase there is a 9.75% Historic Preservation Fee. I mean everything. Food, drinks, bunker tour, gift shop etc. I’m not sure how the fee is being used because this entire hotel needs to be spruced up. It’s literally saying “I’m tired boss”
