What clients say about Campus Automotive in Blacksburg (VA)

I've taken my car to Campus Auto for everything it has needed since I moved to Blacksburg four years ago. They always do a great job. They are friendly, professional, and fast. They charge a fair price, affordable for me but high enough so that they can pay to keep their wonderful techs. I'm always skeptical of insanely low prices, because things that are too good to be true are usually not true. Campus Auto is both good and true.

TL;DR: Easy to make an appointment, harder to find the money to pay for services that you don't need. I made an appointment in about 5 minutes for this shop without a hitch. To get by breaks diagnosed it is a $100 fee. In addition to diagnosing breaks they looked at my entire car, which is not what I sent my car in to do. When diagnosing breaks, they should stick to the breaks instead of telling me that I need every fluid in my car replaced and a new timing belt (my entire timing assembly was replaced 8 months ago). The system where they send you your diagnosis is intuitive, and it would have earned this shop 4 stars on its own if this places service and practices weren't utterly reprehensible. When I got the diagnosis the total for recommended services was greater than $3000. Mind you, most of the services were recommended because my vehicle couldn't be looked up on Carfax, so they were automatically added to the list. Over the phone the employee talked to me as if I was either 12 or had never heard of a car. He explained to me that if I wanted my car to last I should do all of the services they recommended. For reference the labor cost for replacing spark plugs on my Hyundai was $500, and the job total was over $800 If I was a gullible and ignorant college student who has never been away from their parents I might have accepted the service. That type of manipulation seems to be their business model. For the service that I really needed, they charged $1600 in order to get my rear breaks replaced. The parts that they planned on using were the most expensive on the market. I of course denied this service and they tried to scare my by telling me my car was unsafe to drive and did not give my keys back until I signed a waiver. I drove my car the 300 miles home with no issue where my local shop fixed it for $450. In essence, my calipers, pistons and hoses were not broken, and although pictures were provided, those services did not need to be rendered to my vehicle. This is a dishonest and predatory business that relies on ignorance and price gouging.

They were so helpful and were able to get my car in for an inspection even though I scheduled the appointment very last-minute. Everyone who helped me was very friendly and my car was done in an hour. Will definitely be returning here for service!

They fixed my car quickly and took great care of everything to get me back on the road safely. I highly recommend Campus Automotive!

My tire was cut on the sidewall and I made a call to get help. A short time later the driver showed up and changed my tire. Thank you so much for your help and being so nice.

Do NOT use Campus Automotive in Blacksburg, VA. I had them look at my son's car as he is an out of town student and it was convenient. He was experiencing an engine miss and low speed shimmy. First off, diagnostics cost me $300.00, which resulted in 13 "recommended" repairs for a cost of about $5,000.00. No way. I.brought the car home and had my local mechanic address the most pressing issues; engine miss (they wanted over a $1,000.00 to replace coil packs and sparkplugs), front brakes ($600.00 because Campus said the rotors were warped), and lower control arms and ball joints (at a quoted price of around a $1,000.00). A total cost of around $3,000.00. First, there was NOTHING wrong with the front brakes. NOTHING! The shimmy was due to the control arms, and my mechanic replaced them and corrected the coil pack for a cost of $775.00 parts and labor. If you're ever in the Shenandoah Valley and want a capable and honest mechanic I've got one.

Do not go here for any service! I took my car in for an appointment state inspection! 8 hours later, they called me to say It failed, They told me 3 things, (only one thing was actually state inpection regulation). I got the 3 things fixed, took my car back, they found something else - failed for the second time, took it to a other garage for an inspection - they found things that campus automotive didn't find and could have actually been hazardous! The new garage fixed the problem and passed my car! Campus automotive is horrible, very rude! The women at the desk was horrible and disrespectful. The best thing I can say for them is the establishment is very clean for a garage!

Thank you, Casey, for narrowing down the mystery regarding my three Subaru fobs. You were right about it being the communication module for the lock-unlock feature. Highly recommend Campus Automotive. I will choose them again.

Appointment at Vet school with my large dog and after leaving had a flat tire on the side of 406. Could not successfully get a tow truck to area until I called Campus automotive. She quickly made me relax and help was on the way! Two gentlemen arrived and quickly and professionally put on the spare and directed me to discount tire. They even called ahead, so were expecting me. Exceedingly helpful!!! Thank you!

Charged approximately $1,200 for an alternator replacement. A predatory charge about four times the reasonable and customary amount for this repair (I was quoted $300 - $400 dollars TOTAL from another shop to replace the alternator). They provided quotes for additional, unnecessary repairs with insane markups far above normal pricing. An instance of this is them identifying an almost brand new timing belt as 19+ years old, most probably an effort to charge me for work that doesn't need to be done, rather than incompetence. They failed to reset the vehicle stereo after disconnecting the battery for an extended period, forcing me to get this done elsewhere... For $1,200 they didn’t couldn't even do that.

My car broke down on I-81S and I had it towed to Campus Automotive. I spoke with James in the Service Dept. He told me my engine was locked up and I needed a new engine. He suggested I contact Kia because it might be covered under warranty. This company is straight up honest, gave me great advice and I would highly trust and recommend. Thanks!

I got a state inspection done and the service was good and quick too. But had some issues after I came back home. I parked my car and the next day when I started, the battery was discharged and I had to jump start it to get the car running. Secondly the engine cover was left open and was noticed after a week because of the sound coming from under the hood.

I normally service my own vehicle, but some maintenance items require special equipment. I recently had campus automotive do a fluid exchange on my truck's transmission, because a normal drain and fill wouldn't get the old fluid out of the torque converter or the atf cooler, and I don't have a fluid exchanger machine. I also had them replace the atf filter because they already had my truck in their shop. It shifts like a dream again. 71,000 miles and it shifts like it's brand new. I also had them adjust my rear brakes because I just did my own brakes but I hate doing drum brakes and I wanted them perfect. They did a great job! Whether you need some oddly specific maintenance done (like me), or you just need a shop you can trust to do things correctly and be thorough, Campus Automotive will get it done. Don't go to the dealership, and don't trust a lesser shop. Go to Campus Automotive and ask for Casey.

These gentlemen saved me twice in one weekend from my own foolishness (locked keys in rental car) and did such an amazing job that I must publicly thank them, even if it shows my forgetfulness. And on the 4th of July and a Sunday, no less! They were prompt, quick, and extremely kind. I appreciate them making a stressful situation worry-free.

I had my car stall in the middle of north main while there was a considerable amount of traffic. I was fortunate enough that a tow truck drove by me and offered me assistance. Harrison was extremely helpful and provided insight as to why my car stalled and suggested ways to go about solving the issue. He was incredibly kind during the process and listened intently as I described the issues. Overall it was a great experience being serviced by Harrison. While I hope my car does not continue to have issues, if it did, I would hope to have him help me once again.

I locked myself out of my Jeep at Kroger gas station and was quite nervous. They called Campus Automotive for me. They said Campus Automotive were very nice. Frankie arrived just when they said he would. He could see I was nervous. He calmed me down. He got the car open in a jiffy was very pleasant.

I talked with a lovely lady named Missy (in Towing) and she was delightful! She was polite and patient (with a sweet Southern charm) as I got the information I needed to get help with being locked out of my car. She talked me through the process, gave me an ETA for the technician, and was a good conversationalist. Excellent customer service skills! Thank you, Missy!

Amazing service. Friendly people. Efficient work. Casey was a comfortable presence for me during a difficult time with my vehicle. He and his staff went the extra mile to help me out ASAP and get my vehicle to where it needed to be. Thank you all!

Came here for an inspection and they were awesome! Got it done quick, gave me recommendations and diagnostics AT NO additional charge, WITH A REPORT! They didn’t push to sell me stuff unnecessarily and answered any questions I had with patience ! 10/10

We had an amazing experience at Campus Automotive. Our car broke down while we were heading to our daughter‘s graduation, and it was imperative that we returned to Northern Virginia the following day. Campus Automotive quickly towed our vehicle, perform diagnostics, replaced the alternator, and had us back on the road all in the same day! We highly recommend them for anyone who needs quick repairs. Thank you, Campus Automotive!

They made scheduling an inspection a breeze and did a great job communicating throughout the process. Everyone there was kind and never tried to upsell us. We're glad to have found a great place to bring our cars to for future inspections!

Great experience! They did my inspection. I appreciated them breaking down what I needed to pass the inspection vs general maintenance. No one tried to sell me services I didn’t need. The waiting area was clean and quiet. Definitely recommend.

My younger brother brought his car to Campus Automotive because of a strange noise. After charging him $90, they returned the car without fixing or even diagnosing the issue. The exact same noise persists. Extremely disappointed—this felt like a clear case of charging for nothing. I would strongly advise against trusting them with your vehicle.

These people are FANTASTIC. I was treated very well, welcomed and they took the time to listen to my issue with the car. I was traveling and they got me right in and went to work. They were incredibly thorough in assessing and inspecting my car and I was confident they could and would fix it. The problem was a little more complicated and complex but they narrowed it down and fixed the issue. I was able to drive 900 miles home with no problems. They are professional, very competent, and very reasonable. Would definitely use them again but I hope I don't have to!

BEWARE of this place would be my advice. My daughter brought her car in because her front brakes were making noise. After Campus inspected her car the mechanic said her front and back brakes needed to be replaced at an estimated cost of $1,350. There was a myriad of other suggested repairs on the same estimate sheet. I called a family friend who happens to be a mechanic. After sharing the cost with him, he advised me that the price was very high, so I called Campus Automotive myself. Spencer told me all 4 of my daughter's brakes "had only 1mm of pad left" and that driving her car was dangerous and that she would have to sign a waiver of liability to drive it off the lot. My daughter picked up her car and took it to Prices Service Center just down the road. After the mechanic there inspected her vehicle, their conclusion, front brakes needed to be replaced, back brakes were just fine with more than1/2 the pad left. Total bill $450.00 The other suggested repairs didn't need to be done.

Dakota was very kind and made a stressful situation so much easier. You can tell he genuinely cares. He also referred us to Campus Automotive for an inspection, which was super helpful! Easily one of the most professional tow truck drivers I have ever worked with and I will be calling for him in the event that I ever need a tow.

I had a great experience this afternoon thanks to Dakota from the towing company. He was incredibly helpful, kind, and understanding throughout the whole process. It’s not every day you come across someone so professional and easy to work with in a stressful situation. Really appreciate the excellent service!

After a scary late-night experience with a blown-out tire, having Brady come out and take care of my stranded car made such a difference. He was prompt, warm , sincere, and professional, and he knew his stuff when it came to cars. He changed my tire out and quickly realized that my car had more damage than just the blown tire, so he ended up towing it as well. The whole time he was there, I knew that my car and I were in caring and competent hands. Thanks so much, Brady!

Great experience with Campus auto. They were recommended by another parent from VT. My sons car was not starting and needed a new battery. More important they showed me the condition of his tires and the terrible shape my son had let them get to. Being in Richmond and not knowing anyone up there I trusted the recommendation from another parent, I am so glad I did. I'm convinced my son would have had a blowout with two of these tires that were showing the steel belts SMH. They were very reasonably priced, Quick to get it repaired and most importantly SAFE!! Thanks Campus Auto
