What clients say about Wilderness Road Campground in Newington (VA)

We really enjoy having the open campsite. It allows for more vehicle parking and less rigid placement of tents bathroom facilities are close by. Can't say enough good things about the Rangers that work in that area. They're very knowledgeable and accommodating. Campsite is adjacent to the Mischa Mokwa trail.

Great campground close to many sites and activities. Only volunteers due to government shutdown but very helpful. Bathrooms and showers clean and warm.

Lots are good size. Check clearance getting into your spot. Bathrooms have a constant sulfur odor. Location is perfect and scenery is great.

Beautiful place to camp, trails available for hiking from beginner to advanced.

We stayed in Cumberland Gap for a weekend and absolutely loved it. It was myself, my husband and our dog. We don’t have any children but the place was very kid friendly. Campsites were clean and shaded. I was very impressed with the bathhouses- they were very conveniently located to all campsites and were so well maintained. Area was quiet and staff is very friendly. What we loved the most is the campsite actually hosted events for kids AND adults!! Lots of trails that start from inside the campsite. Prices were very affordable so we were able to budget a lot of other options into our stay. (We stayed in spot c22 for reference)

Very nice place to camp. Very clean and well maintained. Bears were active in the campground while I was there so, use caution.

This is a very nice, quiet, shaded campground with large sites. Each one has a firering and picnic table. Bathrooms are clean and have coin-operated showers. There is potable water available at the dump station but not at the campsites. Some sites are large enough for 35+ foot RVs.

The campground is lovely! Well maintained, clean and the sites are very wooded and private. You get plenty of shade to survive the hot summer days. Showers and clean bathrooms throughout the campsite. The rangers are so friendly and we loved all the ranger led activities. So many trails to discover nearby….

This campground is beautiful, quiet and offers lots of trails to hike and beautiful scenery. The ranger on duty when we came helped us get a campsite that was perfect! We loved it!!! His suggestion was the perfect site for us. We will definitely come back here to camp.

This is a campground not a hotel. Google is asking me to rate the rooms. One of the quiet spots. We love visiting this campground because it is always quiet. The other nice feature is this place is not a parking lot. This place has trees and your sites are generally private. Every time we have visited here they were have events in the amphitheatre.

What I like most about this campground is the fact that it's definitely wilderness and not many people seem to know about it. It's quiet, and there's plenty of hiking and wildlife to see.

Very quiet and peaceful campground. Campsite was clean when we got there. Unlevel, but manageable. This is a place to go and relax. Staff were friendly and helpful. We will be back.

We are about 2 hour drive from here this is our first time that we stayed and we stayed on site C6 most of the sites in C-section and b section are electrical.. when you connect to the electricity in the box has both 30 and 50 amps to plug into. We loved this place it is quiet and big spaces between other campers dog friendly. We are senior citizen age and we walked some of the area. The rangers are very friendly and helpful. A big shout out to ranger Sam. This definitely is our go to area. We will be back a highly recommended to anyone. We are in a c model , but there's others with bigger rigs some are big and wide camping areas.

We spent four nights at Wilderness Road Campground. The campground is beautiful with lots of trails. It is a short drive into Cumberland Gap, which was a sweet town with welcoming people. Things to note: -Very nice and clean showers and bathrooms. Multiple options near campsites. -For tent campers be aware that many of the tent sites are small and not flat. A small tent is recommended for most sites, but we were able to use our large tent by switching sites with my brother and sister in law who had a pop up and leveling blocks. Some of the sites were spacious and others tiny. -One side has considerable road noise, but the rest of the campsite was quiet. -There is wood for sale at the campsite, but we never found anyone who worked there and bought wood from down the road. -We only saw a campground host once during our stay, he drove by on a golf cart. However, on Saturday there did seem to be someone manning check-ins. - Many trails and tourist spots within an easy drive. -clean and well kept. We enjoyed our stay.

No rooms this is a campgroud. Very nice sites. Do not veer off edge of pad however, Poison ivy everywhere. Camp host very helpful. We only stayed for 1 night. The listing is clear, and site specific, some sites are steep or uncomfortably not flat. I reserved one that we could not use. The host was able to switch the site for us. We were very happy with our stay.

Writing this at the picnic table! Very well-maintained campground in a beautiful area. I’m sure it fills up during the summer but we’re here on 4/20 and about 1/5 of spots are occupied. D35 is a lovely tent camping site with lots of room to spread out! Bathrooms and facilities were super clean and it was so refreshing to splash my face with warm water. No mosquitos yet this time of year yay! but there is poison ivy so be careful.

Outstanding National Park campground. Whether RV or tent, sites are thoughtfully laid out and not on top of each other. Nice bathroom and showers. Clean and great short or long hikes. Be sire to drive up to Pinnacle Overlook nearby and walk up the paved trail.

We visited for 5 days/4 nights in early October 2024. The leaves had just started to change but many were on the ground. The campground is well maintained and set up with 7 semi-circles connected to a common main road. The sites were a mix of open and private within easy walking distance to trash/recycling and bathroom/shower facilities. The ranger staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. You can buy firewood onsite for $10/bundle or at the nearby Circle K gas station (in Middlesboro) for $20/3 bundles. The trails within the park are awesome with lots of grade differential. They are rated moderate and we'd recommend hiking sticks to help with stability. We encountered small to medium sized black bear (momma and two cubs and a lone adult) three times during our hikes but each time they were frightened off by our walking noises and ran quickly away from us so fast that we were unable to get any photos. The Pinnacle Overlook was beautiful and worth the drive or hike (we hiked). We can only image the beauty during peak fall colors. We try to minimize our trash but the park only recycles plastic bottles and cans. Glass and paper need to be taken out with you or deposited in the trash. The showers are unisex and massive for a campground, but only two in each shower building. They have constant hot water and a large bench for changing. We had beautiful temps with highs in the 70s and lows in the low 50s. We had a great experience and would love to return.

Very nice and clean campsites with and without electricity. Each site has a picnic table and fire pits with a grill grate. Has several shower houses with restrooms throughout the park. Lots of walking trails. Has an amphitheater. A place to get firewood, dumpsters, bear-safe containers at certain campsites, water for your campers, and a place to remove your sewage.

Awesome camp site. RV sites only have an electric connection, but there are showers and bathrooms throughout each parking area. At the entrance there's a dump and water for those that need to use it. Very relaxing atmosphere. We definitely plan on visiting again.

My family and I have been here several times the last few years. We love this camp ground. There are tent sites and RV sites both with and without hookups. The restrooms are well kept and showers are immaculate. Close to many hiking trails and historic places. We plan on going back as often as possible!

We had a very fun and relaxing night away at this campground. We travel as a family with my husband and I being in our 40s and daughters being older teenagers and our 2 dogs. We tent camped and easily fit a 4 man and a 6 man tent on the site. The site was clean and flat, had a picnic table, a fire pit, and electric. The place you pull your car into is paved. The sites are separated by a wooded area but they are still pretty close. We saw no kids play area and the campsite was really quiet. The bath houses/restrooms are easily accessible and there are multiple ones placed throughout the campground that are connected by a paved walking path. The showers weren't real clean. They weren't terrible , but I'd definitely recommend shower shoes. The area doesn't really have any long hiking trails near it, but there are several very short easy to walk trails. You cannot bring your own wood so you have to buy it locally. We bought 4 packs of wood from the camp store and it was way over priced! It cost is over $40! We found an awesome little country store that is definitely worth going to called Montgomery Grocery. The wood was priced at about half the cost of the wood bundles from the campground and it contained more wood. Overall the campground provided us with a great place to tent camp for the weekend and we would return to camp there again. We would recommend a great hiking trail that is about a30 min drive away that is worth the trip. It is on an old railroad track that was converted to a hiking trail. There are several places to access the river and beautiful scenery along the way. It was about 2.4 miles total and called Clear Creek Hollow Trail.

This is a wonderful and beautiful federal park. It’s very clean and the staff work hard every day not just making sure that the campgrounds are clean and also safe! They have free showers that are very clean and nice hot water, bathrooms and electric hook up’s at tent sites with picnic tables, fire rings and all the camp sights are not stacked upon each other with wooded privacy! Dogs are allowed and they have many trails to walk. So beautiful and serene

The campground is very nice & maintained. The shower & restrooms clean. Convenient to Cumberland Gap and the sites & hiking trails. We could hear the main road from our site, F7. For a quieter stay, stay closer in. **Caution** You are outside, there is poison ivy galore. Just keep your eye out & stay safe.

It’s a campground it has no rooms. Camp sites are well maintained off season they have two camp host the shower and comfort station between c and d sites is open the other ones are closed during off season. Register on line. They have electric and fire ring and picnic tables. The tent sites have no electric. Some sites are not level most are. No RV over 28. No play ground but they have 85 miles of hiking trails dog friendly on a leash. They have a dump station and water hydrants to fill fresh water tanks or water containers.

The park is beautiful with lots of hiking trails. We hiked to Skylight Cave. It was a steep trail, a little hard on the knees, but doable. If you go bring a good flash light otherwise you won’t be able to see anything. The campground was adequate, sites not super private. We were glad to be there while the trees still had leaves on them. We never saw the park ranger to ask questions. You can hear the highway, which takes away from being in the wilderness, but makes it convenient for getting supplies. We met some nice camping neighbors and had a relaxing time.

One of the best campgrounds we've been to. We stayed here 3 nights during our travels. It was quiet and peaceful. The campground as well as the National Park is very, very well maintained. Amazing views in the beautiful Cumberland Gap area. I definitely recommend it.

Not entirely safe! We enjoyed our stay, however we did want to warn other campers. I hate to complain, but just feel others should be forewarned as best possible. This is a lovely old forest, with huge beautiful trees… Unfortunately the trees within the campground are unmanaged, and we feel they are a safety risk to campers. Many of them are long dead and falling apart. Limbs big enough to hurt someone were everywhere after a good wind. Many are falling over at the roots and into campsites- and yes, those poor beautiful trees are hefty enough to easily crush an RV. Even scarier for tent campers. We left our reservation two days early, in anticipation of a coming storm. Strongly recommend camping here during only good weather! RV sites are nice new blacktop, which is great! However this campground is on a steep hill. As such, about 2/3 of the RV sites are not very level- some were nearly at a 30* angle. Pack all of your leveling equipment, especially if you’re staying in C loop! Sites are also a bit short. Our 27’ camper left almost no room for our tow vehicle, had to get creative with parking. Other than that, this is a stunning area and is an otherwise great campground. Very peaceful. Regularly patrolled by law enforcement, it felt very secure. Hiking is amazing. Bathrooms are indeed super clean, and showers are private and hot. Lots of squirrels and birds to entertain you. Just be forewarned, and you’ll have an excellent time here!
