This is an excellent museum and fort site, much better than what you see out at Fort Sumter — and you’re not rushed through it either. Take your time going through the visitor center and talk with the docents in the fort. You’ll get a lot from both of them. If you combine this site with a boat tour around the area, you’ll get the most bang for your Fort Sumter/Fort Mountie buck.

Great fort an amazing trip back into time, especially in the underground stations where it's like a time capsule. Plenty of large cannons in and out of the fort and after you're done with the fort you can go to the shore right in front. Definitely visit

Run by the National Park Service, this place begins in a visitor center with rangers telling lots of interesting facts and great displays. Then a narrated ferry ride to the fort, more rangers at the fort plus a museum. Plenty of time to explore and then a peaceful ride back. Extremely well organized!!!

We went on a rainy day and still had a wonderful time. My kids liked exploring and reading the history

A beautiful and historic place to visit! While it is a pretty quick walk around 1-2 hours max. There is still a bit to see. You are able to walk to the beach from there as well! For $10 a ticket unless you're military, etc.. it is a great price! The visitors center has a lot of the history of the Fort. We did not get to go to Fort Sumter this time around, however the next time we visit, that will be the stop!

What an amazing place. The history itself is enough of a reason to visit but it is also a beautiful site. Visiting on a sunny 80-degree day right after x-mas was a treat and the view was great.

Fort Moultrie was amazing; they manage to show how the fort was utilized from the Revolutionary War through World War 2. The film at the Visitor Center is also amazing. Definitely a must visit.

Great place to learn about Sullivan's Island and it's part in wars on American soil...

Definitely worth a stop. A lot of history. $10 entrance fee at visitor center. Worth reading about the history.

Outstanding historical site. Guided tour on the boat by NPS rangers. Free time in the fort. Highly recommend!

Very nice national park with gave of Osceola adjacent. The park is an impressive layout of military defense that served well from the late 1700s when it was first built from Palmetto logs up into the 1800s when Ft Sumpter was built. I think appreciation of sites like this is improved when we imagine the men and women who had to endure the lifestyles and challenges of the time period. Definitely worth wandering through if you are in the area.

Great place to visit. Fort Moultrie is less frequented than Fort Sumter but it is definitely worth the trip. Very cool fort, bunker, museum, cannon row, etc to explore. Summer, one of the park rangers was very helpful and kind- thank you! She explained who Moultrie was (who the fort is named after) and how his victory led our country to be free!! You can get your National Park passes here which is super convenient. Also randomly happened to meet an Army veteran and military/ history buff and it was so neat to learn about everything from how they melted bread church bells in the south to make cannons to steel cannons up north, to the his own families ties to various wars and his British history and family roots in John’s Island! What a cool trip!!

Visited Fort Moultrie for the first time on a weekday right at 9am when they opened. We had the place to ourselves. The exhibits in the visitor center were nice. Restrooms can be accessed from the outside of the building and we're clean. Free parking, you pay inside the visitor center before crossing the street into the fort. Overall it was interesting and the views were great. Some parts definitely need attention maintenance wise. They also had a large amount of red wasps or hornets all around, likely from all the old wood. So be cautious if youre allergic. A guided tour would likely be a good idea if you want to get the most out of your trip, though we did not do one.

Amazing experience. There is interesting history this place has. It's located next to the beach. This was my first time coming here cause I was seeking somewhere to power walk. I drove by this place. It looked so interesting i had to stop. I ended up getting my power walk, seeing the outside historical wonders of this place and fishing. Three in one, can't get any better, then that!

Not a lot to see. Park for free. You are supposed to pay to see in fort. I went after to pay and after wandering around the visitors center and no one there I left. I do have my parks pass which they take so didn't steal from them.

Very educational. Wife and son had a great day exploring the fort glad they got to experience what I did when I was younger

A lot of history at the fort as well as the local area. Interesting display of cannons used at the Forch over the years. Park Ranger gave us some good information and some highlights about the park why we toured.

Another credit to our National park service for this historic site. Impeccably maintained, loads of history here and a very informative movie at the entrance building. I hadn't known much about Fort Moultrie until I took my time and read the displays at the welcome building. All very interesting, these are the things that make history come alive. Very helpful staff and knowledgeable tour guides. Thank you

We went on Wednesday and it was pouring so we did the inside stuff, the movie, kids did the junior ranger program. Went back the next day (tickets good for a week) got there with 30 mins until they closed. We quickly walked around the fort and got to see it all. As we were leaving they asked if the kids wanted to help lower and fold the flag which of course they did. A super cool experience for them. Learned a lot of history.

Really enjoyed our visit to Fort Sumter. What a great historical place. The guides provided lots of information and everyone was friendly. The visit could be a bit longer,we didn't have enough time to fully explore. But the ferry ride doesn't allow for more time. Ferry ride is short and provides great views. Anyone interested in history should visit Fort Sumter!!!

Jr ranger program was great for my kids. Kids are free 15 and under. Parking closes at 430 so go early so you can see everything. The ranger was very knowledgeable. RIP to all of our soldiers that occupied this area and all that served

Be sure to arrive in time to visit and tour the grounds inside Fort Moultrie before the gates close! Last year, I arrived too close to the fort itself closing but was able to walk the grounds. I was able to take some really cool pictures, and th we y do have a lot of signage, but I was so excited when I arrived early enough to enter the fort this year. I don't know if they offer guided tours, I walked the grounds on a self-guided tour. The inside of the fort is well marked and small enough to complete in about an hour. The Visitor Center is across the street and has a nice bookstore and museum full of artifacts and information. The Rangers and store staff are full of information.

I loved the self guided tour of the fort. So many things to see. So much of it is tunneled underground, it could be east to get turned around in here. In the lookout tower you have spectacular panoramic views. Great restoration and several informative displays will definitelykeep you interested. Plan on spending 2 hours here to see everything. $10 fee to visit, can be purchased across the street in the museum.

• We visited on a Sunday morning in late December 2023 (Christmas Eve). There was plenty of parking in the large parking lot. We actually got lost making a left after seeing the fort but the visitor center is actually the next right slightly down the road. • It was quite busy, much more so than Fort Sumter Visitor Center in Liberty Square. • They do request payment or showing your annual pass as you enter the visitor center. There are signs at the fort that say the same thing although there was no one out at the fort enforcing it so it’s on the honor system out there. • The bathrooms are located just outside the main entrance to visitor center. • The junior ranger books can be picked up at the main desk and they also happen to have the junior ranger books and badges for Fort Sumter and Charles Pinckney as well as this is the main office they do their mailings from. They also have the NPS Passport Cancellation Stamps for those sites. The junior ranger book for Ft. Moultrie can be done inside the visitor center. • There is a theater inside on the right that plays a short film. It’s funny as the Ranger at Ft. Sumter mentioned to us to count how many outfits the actor changes into as the whole video is shot with the same actor as he goes through the history of the fort in all the different outfits. I think my middle son counted 8. • The NPS store is also a decent size and includes a couple items from Charles Pinckney but didn’t notice much for Ft. Sumter. • The exhibits in here are relatively new and very well done. There were a few displays that were incomplete or under construction at the time of our visit. • Another Ranger was giving a program/tour of the fort at 11AM and he was fabulous. Very engaging while getting all the information across. We had a large group, and everyone was paying attention. • Ranger Rebecca (spelling?) went above and beyond and was awesome! She helped us with everything from NPS store questions to questions about the fort and the other local forts. She gave us info about status of the other parks as Charles Pinckney had closed for the entire day and also information about the local town and what to do etc. • The fort itself was fun to explore. There are signs that kind of guide you through the fort. There were some flooded parts from recent rains and so we could not get there. • We didn’t get to see everything and would probably stop by again if we were in the area to finish everything. Also see what the final exhibits would be inside the visitor center. Additionally, a number of people took the trails down to the water but we decided against it.

This fort is really neat if you’re looking for a self touring area. It’s pretty well preserved and it’s not very touristy. The staff at the visitors center were very kind and informative during our visit. I do wish the museum was a little bigger with a few more exhibits, but didn’t disappoint. We loved walking around the fort and seeing the old cannons still in place, and that they have maintained and preserved a lot of the structures. It’s very cool getting to see how close to the water they really were and how all of that came into play during time of war.

This is one of the few places I didn't read about before I checked it out. When we arrived, there was plenty of parking available. There is also a separate parking lot when you head east to check out the Canon walk and Battery Jasper. The visitors center had a little gift shop and museum to check out artifacts. It did seem like there were a lot of items "temporarily off display." They also play a little move in the theater every 30 mins, which gives you some insight. Once you leave the visitors center, you can go on the roof, and there are good photo ops there. We also ran into some little lizards, but they were friendly. Then, you walk across the street and enter through the Sally port. They do a very good job of having self guided signs up so you can make sure you follow a path and hit everything. I also didn't realize that it was retrofitted for use in WW2. They had operations centers and other offices you could check out with stuff on display. I'll let my pictures do the rest of the talking. Overall, a must see if you are a history buff.

This is a history buffs dream! We spent 2-3 hours here and my better half, who is not a history nut like me loved it. You have to join the park rangers history walk and talk. So much info in a short time and the better half was not bored by it. She didn't want to wait for the tour but was so glad that she did. The ranger brought the fort to life for her.

An amazing experience and history lesson. While I wanted to visit Fort Sumter, there is a 3-4 hour time commitment due to ferry and thorough tour. We decided to go to Fort Moultrie. From the park rangers to the very knowledgeable guides, it was the right choice today. The next time you visit one of our national monuments and a guide wants to share a quick lay of the land, do it. It was an amazing history lesson. I would never have known most of it by simply exploring on my own.

This place is so cool! An artifact and peice of American history for starters. It cost 10$ to enter Fort Moultrie but totally worth it! I would give yourself at least 2-3 hours to be able to see everything here. You can walk down to the beach which is only a few hundred yards away. So glad I went for a day! Will definitely be going back!
