I absolutely love riding on this ferry. Super helpful , super appreciative of all the hard work they do and fast efficient way get off long Island with ease. The delis on the ferry are delicious as well. Very fresh food.
A perfect way to eliminate NYC traffic on way to Boston. The ferry was smooth sailing and the boarding with or without a vehicle was seemless. The scenery was brilliant as we passed many islands off the north fork. Highly recommend.
We've used Cross-Sound Ferry for years and they are always a reliable option to "driving around" when traveling to New England to avoid NY traffic. CS Ferry, to me, is the preferred ferry company, compared to B-PJ Ferry, as the New London terminal is much nicer than the Bridgeport terminal.
On our recent trip over the holidays, however, the loading/unloading staff were notably terrible. On both sides. Unpleasant, unhelpful, disinterested, and at Orient, they screwed up our ticketing, putting us in the standby line for an earlier boat, then giving us a hard time when I explained that we should be in the the queue for our reserved boat. Supervision? Training? Or are there just not great candidates for the job? Do better.
I had a 9am reservation this morning. We were running about an hour early so I called and enquired whether we could be moved onto the 8:30am ferry. The reservation agent modified the reservation. I very clearly stated our situation. When we arrived, our tickets stated that she had put us on the 8:30pm ferry.
The gate person put us on the LONG standby line and we went inside to explain the situation thinking this was a misunderstanding and they would help us considering it was their mistake. Nope. Even though online we could see there were spots available on both the 8:30 and 9, they refused to change the ticket, acted like it was our fault, and told us to keep our fingers crossed on standby. Then they UPCHARGED my credit card $30 - for what I have no idea!
If anyone had done right by the customer and told us not to stress, they would make sure we would be on the 9, I wouldn’t be writing this. People make mistakes and that’s forgivable; what matters is will the business make it right. CSF will not. Never using them again. I’ll drive around - NY rush hour traffic is less stressful than the morning I had.
Not only is this very easy, convenient and always on time, the staff and crew are super nice and considerate. My 90 year-old mother travels this ferry very often to visit us in New England and the crew always helps her with her luggage and makes sure that I can pick her up close to the dock. Thank you so much for making our holidays pleasant and easy.
They transport across LI Sound. It's very expensive if going by car, but saves driving through city traffic, so the headache vs the ride can't be described. I've taken this route for years now from Boston to LI. It saves the hassle of NYC bridge traffic which makes it well worth it. The ferries are as expected, just basic tables with outlets and a snack food bar. More than enough for the 1. 5 hr trip. Worth the peace if you have to do this route often enough.
My ferry on a Monday at 9:15pm was canceled and they rebooked it for 8:00am on Tuesday. The did not make me pay the price change for the ferry I booked on Tuesday since it was peak and I had originally booked a rewards member spot that was cheaper. I arrived at 7:50am on Tuesday and the ferry was still boarding but they told me I was “late” and put me in standby and gave my spot away to other people who did not have a reservation. I had to wait another hour to get on the 9:00am ferry. When I got on the next ferry they upcharged me $37.97 because they said I was late for my ferry and they would no longer honor the price change from my original ferry that they canceled. In all the years I’ve taken the ferry, I’ve never had my spot taken away, even if I was there 5 or 10 minutes before my reservation, they still let me get on the ferry. When I talked to the customer service representatives, they were unsympathetic, talked over me on the phone and in the office, and kept telling me I was late and it was their policy and I should have read the disclaimer. They were not helpful and rude. When I asked if I could book a later ferry, they said “that’s called double booking and it’s against our policy.” They were short and snippy with me and didn’t make an effort to help. Even if I am in the wrong about not being there 15 minutes early, they could have said I’m really sorry I know that it must be distressing and had some sympathy. But they did not seem sympathetic and made me feel terrible.
Much, much better than expected. Regular schedule, very nice upstairs lounge with full bar and limited food menu, and great views. Very comfortable. Staff were all excellent - professional and friendly! Highly recommended!
I had an antique car over 70 years old and I was 5 minutes late for a 8 am ferry ( I arrived at 7:53) and they wouldn’t let me board even after they put me on standby!!

The ferry ride from Orient Point, NY to New London, CT was wonderful. The service was great and the ride itself was pretty good. Ferry ride is about 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are plenty of seats to sit both inside and outside with an option to buy coffee, snacks, food and desserts. Bathrooms are available too. We are allowed to enter back into our cars towards the end of the ferry ride.
Great option to cross from New York to Rhode Island with a scenic ferry Ride with your car! Prompt and courteous service and the lovely view makes this an enjoyable trip!
Wow what an amazing experience. First time I’ve ever taken a ferry with my SUV and it was great. Was heading to Maine from Long Island and decided to try it and it was definitely pretty cool and saved a LOT of driving time.
We always enjoy and appreciate the crew for getting us across the sound safely. Yesterday the water was rough and they navigated the waters with ease. We had a good meal too. Cross Sound Ferry for the win!
had a great experience traveling back from Boston, hanging out in Connecticut, then hopping on the ferry for a scenic and relaxing ride back to long island. you won't be saving money but you'll be getting back home in style and without the agony of just driving endlessly.
We’re touring with a couple of motorcycles. I wanted to use his ferry but the website said it was fully booked. We turned up anyway in the hope of getting on, and the ferry office said no problem and sold us tickets for the next boat, leaving in ten minutes, which was good.
We were surprised that there was no equipment, straps, bars etc, for securing the bikes on the ferry. We’ve taken bikes on many ferries in Europe and apart from short river crossings, bikes are always tied down with something - even string.
The deckhand said that if we were worried about the bikes falling over, we should stay with them. However the water was smooth, the trip was nearly an hour and a half, and coffee was calling, so we left the bikes.
When it was time to get off, it was obvious that one of the bikes had fallen over and then been picked up again, as there were scratches on the screen and levers. Fortunately no major damage. Also congratulations to whoever stood it up again, as these are heavy bikes, we wouldn’t be able to do it ourselves.
In hindsight we should have had a load of straps and padding ready to hand so we could secure the bikes for the crossing. But we don’t normally tour with that amount of gear. Perhaps we should.
We took the John F which we thought was a great ferry. It's roll on roll off and it has benches along the side. We took the Block Island ferry the week before and this ship is far better.
Very pleasant! I like this a lot more than the Block Island Ferry! The car is easy on and off drive through. The deck has benches facing the water with a roof that gives shade from the sun. After Labor Day it is not crowded. Such a pleasant trip!

Traveling up to Boston and decided to take scenic route. Last few times up had us close to five and a half hours. This route cuts an hour off the trip and passes all of the NYC traffic. For a car, driver, and two passengers we paid $122 and got across to New London in an hour and 15 minutes. Could get pricey but totally worth it. Very cool views top!
This is the first time taking the ferry to shorten our commute Newport, RI and I feel like such an idiot for not doing this sooner.
Saved so much time and money! Actually able to enjoy the commute! No traffic!

Always a relaxing crossing. So much easier than driving through NYC to get to New England. Crew is friendly, views are great, and no worries about traffic.
The ferry saves so much time! You cut out all the bad driving Connecticut and traffic through the city to get onto Long Island.
Definitely recommend it. All the staff is friendly and they're always helpful. And surprisingly enough the food isn't bad
The staff on the Ferry are very friendly and helpful. Traveling with my elderly Mother-In-Law we asked if it were possible to park near the elevator as she uses a walker. The gentleman walked us in, guided us to a spot that was right to it. Thank you so much. Staff is caring and excellent. There are plenty of photo opportunities if you go out on the deck, especially at sunset.
Serendipity! Inadvertently chose a google map route that included a ferry, discovering it too late and too far to turn back. Caught the 3 pm trip to New London on board the John H ferry. Service was excellent with helpful and friendly crew. Boarding was organized and took less than 15 min. On board, large pax area with bar and cafe service. Coffee surprisingly robust and flavorful at 2 usd. Section for pax with pets. Wifi @ 2.99 usd for 2 hours.Clean and well maintained. There's also an exhibit of interesting facts abt Long Island Sound. All in all a wonderful adventure.
This is a great way to break up your trip if you’re heading from Long Island to New England. I love being able to avoid going through New York City and the related traffic. Generally it doesn’t save you much time but it does save you the headache of being stuck in traffic jams. Also, the ferries are nice quick and efficient with restaurants and bars on board, and it just gives you an opportunity to unwind and get off your butt and walk around a long road trips. Reservations are mandatory and priority service to get you first on first off, is a nice convenience.
This was my first time being on a big ferry ship like this and it was definitely a great experience. I was one of the first cars onboard and after parking I headed upstairs and was amazed at the size of the sitting area upstairs and also that there was a small café onboard! Very nice that the seats have places to plug in and charge devices. I loved the views from the upper deck, and when we were pulling into the port on arrival there were fireworks going off which was pretty cool :)
