What clients say about Fire Island National Seashore in Ocean Beach (NY)

I had such a great time visiting Fire Island National Seashore! The beaches were clean, peaceful, and had that soft, quiet vibe you don’t always get on more crowded shores. Walking along the shoreline with the waves coming in felt so relaxing, and the dunes and boardwalks made the whole place even more scenic. I really enjoyed visiting the Fire Island Lighthouse. The trails around the area were calm and full of wildlife, and I loved how natural and untouched everything felt. It’s the perfect spot if you want a mix of beach time, nature walks, and beautiful coastal views.

One of the very best! One of only 10 National Seashores! This one includes am actual shipwreck, a historic lighthouse, and the vestiges of one from before! Museum too!

No cars allowed on the island must take Ferry over from Sayerville and pay for parking there. Left my car at home and took train to Bridgeport/Port Jefferson ferry. Bring cash! Not many places do tap or take CC.

This is actually Davis Park. You'll need to take a ferry here or know someone with a boat. It's a town in Fire Island and off season, it's beautiful.

I was surprised to learn that this location was featured in the film What Happens in Vegas, but after visiting, I completely understand why. The island feels like a beautiful escape, so close to the busy energy of the Big Apple, yet peaceful and untouched. Even though swimming isn’t allowed, there’s so much to enjoy: walking along the shoreline, exploring the dunes, birdwatching, or simply relaxing while taking in the views. It’s the perfect spot to step away from the city and reconnect with nature. ??

The Fire Island National Seashore is a truly magical place. Less than 60 miles from Times Square, it can seem worlds away. If you have the chance to go to the Otis Pike Wilderness, accessible from the East End of the park near Smith point, you will find beaches and dunes which are completely unspoiled - no structures, no signs, few people, nesting wildlife and just the sound of the surf and the birds - it’s truly liberating! Bring sunscreen, bug spray, a sun hat and drinking water as concessions are often miles away, mainly in the remaining beach communities from Davis Park to Fire Island Pines, Cherry Grove, Ocean Park and NPS concessions at Sailors Haven, and Watch Hill. The mainland locations for ferry access to the bulk of the barrier islands not connected by roads or bridges are Patchogue for Watch Hill and Sayville for Sailors Haven, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines.

When I think of New York, I generally think of a bustling city with lots of activity and excitement. I would never think that just outside of Long Island I could find a beautiful, natural retreat. But that’s exactly what Fireside Island National Seashore offers, a retreat back to nature to regroup and reflect. In addition to the seashore and boardwalk, we enjoyed the Light Station, Lighthouse Tower, museum and the gift shop. There are two buildings to explore, the Light Station and the Lighthouse Tower. The building that houses the Lighthouse Tower is also where you’ll find the the museum, restrooms and gift shop. (There is a cost to access the Tower, so please check the “Notable Mention” section of this post to see which discounts might apply to you and/or your group.) The beachfront is gorgeous and so pristine. It was a welcomed surprise to see all the different shells and birds. We also enjoyed the boardwalk which allowed us to take in the scenery without disturbing the natural habitat. All in all, this area was a great unexpected find, and we certainly hope to return! Notable Mentions: The Lighthouse Tower offers the following discounts: Active military are free! Veterans and Seniors receive a reduced rate Please Note: The tower is closed right now and will likely reopen in August 2023.

Not the easiest beach to get to, as you need to coordinate a ferry and then walk through a very unique little "village". But the beach is wide and goes on for miles, with nice water and beautiful sand for a beach so far north. There are also some decent restaurants and shops in town. Will be back next summer for sure!

Virtually untouched beaches, I went on a windy day in May and there was nobody. I even saw foxes on the sand dunes. The South Shore of Long Island has miles and miles of pristine sand, I think these beaches are among the best in the US.

There is a lot to love about this stretch of beach along the south shore of Long Island. Since most of the towns are seasonal there is not a lot of retail, some towns will even just have one shop that doubles as a grocery store/ sandwich shop. Each town will also be served by a local ferry from a town on the mainland. There are “water taxis” which will take you from town to town but these services are catch-as-catch-can. The island has some of the most exquisite beaches on the east coast. Deep soft white sand and tall grassy dunes make many sections feel truly wild. Thanks to conversation efforts the coast is again teeming with wildlife including dolphin, whales, sharks, rays and a host of other fish. The Great South Bay sits on the north shore of Fire Island and is what separates it from the mainland. This body of water has also experienced a renaissance as the tides now cleans the water creating expansive clam beds. If you can find an opportunity to spend time on the beaches here you will be thrilled.

Beautiful & remote location. Easy to get to private dock by boat. Davis Point 1 mile away. Water taxi 1/2 a mile away. Recommend sticking up on rations. Pack light, living in bathing suits & sunblock is the norm, sturdy sandals a must, cool at night & hot & humid during day.

This is one of my favorite places ever... The 4x4 Beach is awesome pet friendly beautiful and for the most part quiet and private. It's been one of my favorite places to go since I'm 16 years old the regular Beach is really nice too and certain nights there are bands that play and everybody looks like they're having a good old time not really my cup of tea but looks like a good time . You can also camp in RVs or tents beautiful views can't you can't beat and tons of waterfront fun. Amazing sunrise and sunsets ???

One of my favorite places to visit in the summer. Everything from the lighthouse to the Sunken Forest makes this a gem making our state proud. The beaches are so pristine and stunningly breathtaking. Each beach here is unique, you see so much wildlife here from deers, egrets, crabs, etc. They need public water fountains or water refilling stations and more public restrooms spread out amongst the island and communities. There also needs to be a inter-community transit asides from the ferry, like a trolley or bus, even a tram.

It's a amazing area. I can't wait every summer to go there. My favourite is Cherry Grove

Only if the county would give this a little bit of funding it would be great. But they refuse. All there money goes to Robert Moses and the eastern beaches. But all in all a very good place.

I found it crazy that there's a three or four foot ledge from the shore to the ocean shore the beach is insane looking but I did appreciate the mat that went down to make it easier to walk down to the shores. The lifeguards seemed cool and you can see how hi the ledge of sand is compared to the actual real sure by looking at the people in the water.

My first time. I heard my father tell me stories about him going here when he was a kid. Boating and camping. My first trip here. I'm so amazed how beautiful it was. You can drive on the beach. 4 x4. Is a must. Fishing even went claming. Had a camp fire on the beach. Grill my fresh clams. We came late. But we stayed way past the sunset

You can travel the world and you might not see beaches like these. Endless beaches, pristine and magnificent. Check on the internet when is high tide to better choose your spot. South-east sun exposure, with glorious sunrises towards the ocean and beautiful sunsets towards the inner lagoon. The dunes have a fragile vegetation protecting them from erosion. However, violent storms have lately destroyed large bits of them.

The beaches at the Pines are always pristine and calm. Surrounded by beauty in all forms. Highly recommend a weekend or day trip. Kid friendly, but mostly adults. The Pines are also predominantly gay men, in various states of undress, so keep that in mind if that's important to you.

This portion of the long island sea shore is pretty wonderful. The weather is nice and the water is simply amazing on a warm day. It's a great destination if you have friends to visit or need a day escape from it all. Fine experience. Food out here can be sub par and super expensive so I'd you plan to come out think ahead. You can get great ice-cream out here though

Stunning! Fire island is beautiful and the lighthouse is breathtaking, a nice walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse, you can spot deer and other wildlife! Once you get to the lighthouse there's a nice climb of 192 steps to the top where you see a heart-stopping view of the island and the ocean all around, after that you can explore the museum and the beautiful sunny beach as well!

Great family and beach time. Water is rough but great for body surfing if you're a strong swimmer. If not, swim by the life guards. They are top notch

Awesome place to vacation and relax. Every home is steps from the beach. You need to ferry there and back. Very laid back, friendly atmosphere. Watch out.... Prices are VERY HIGH!!! ($17.00 for pack of cigs) Come prepared!!! Abundance of deer!!

Beautiful beach, we had a nice Beach Walk. The water was still cold, otherwise I was ready to dive in. Very calm and clean. Did a little bit beachcombing as well. Definitely recommend this. And the village was magical.

Went on a perfect end of summer day and had beautiful views. Also seen hundreds of Monarch butterflies. They even know where the awesome places are!

This is definitely a must-see when on the south shore. Take a ferry from Sayville (costs about $13) and give yourself about 3 hours to explore the Sunken Forest path and adjoining beach. Be sure to bring plenty of bug spray!
