First time crossing at this border coming into the USA and it was empty easy and calm, all I can say about borders is be calm and peaceful, and they will treat you with respect as well..
Read the website to make sure you have everything-passports and id's for all persons, registration for your vehicle. The personnel may not speak English. The US Border patrol personnel will ask why you come and go and what you are bringing to and back from. I was told on the way back into the US that all "citizens forfeit their rights". So they can and will search you and your vehicle as they see it. They know what and who they are patrolling;expect the unexpected, dont be in a hurry.
If you happen to have a medical emergency anywhere near here, it will take EMS roughly 2 to 2.5 hours just to reach you, then another two hours to the Hospital. Closest medical facility is in Mexico, probably as good as Lordsburg's Hospital anyways.
This is a good border crossing but hard to find and difficult logistics. There is a small gas station in Hatchita but expensive. I normally cross here going North. Found out it is CLOSED. To travel all the out there and have to either go back to Deming or over to Agua Prieta. Call the Colombus field office to find out if it is open or closed.
Where you finish the Tour Divide, if you're starting from Banff, Canada. Can't speak to experience with officers. But cyclists are usually low on their list of priorities. It gets stars because it's the finish line of your journey across the continent.
Officer Ureta enjoys taking legitimate permits from Mexican students and also enjoys threatening them by stating he's going to take away their legitimate visas without giving probable cause or having reasonable suspicion. My cousin obtained his Visa and permit. He's a student in Mexico who is now currently on vacation. He comes to visit me when he's on vacation. Well, today was different. Ureta revoked his permission to pass without giving a reason stating he didn't believe my cousin should be visiting and accused him of illegal activity without any evidence.
I'm sure they wouldn't do this if my cousin had blonde hair and blue eyes.
