While on an extended road trip with my wife and two kids from Idaho to Arizona and back, our 2005 Sequoia became a source of endless frustration — breaking down again on our return journey. We found ourselves limping into the small town of Caliente, Nevada, where we were lucky enough to land at the Mercantile NAPA Auto Parts.
That’s where we met Nate — and let me tell you, Nate is the kind of person who reminds you that good, honest, old-school values are alive and well. From the moment we walked in, he treated us with genuine kindness, patience, and a willingness to help that went far beyond anything expected. He didn’t just sell us parts — he offered solutions, called around for us, laid out every possible option to get us back on the road that very day, and even volunteered his personal help as I worked under my car for hours. He didn’t have to do any of it — but he did, with humility and heart.
And Nate wasn’t alone. This entire town rallied around us. Strangers offered cold water, rides, tools, even their own vehicles to help me drive hours away for parts. The people of Caliente were generous, welcoming, and downright inspiring. What started as a mechanical nightmare became one of the most humbling and uplifting experiences of my life.
To everyone who helped — especially Nate — thank you. You reminded me that greatness can be found in the smallest towns, in the simplest gestures, and in the most unexpected places. Caliente, you may be small, but your heart is enormous.
I like that this Napa is attached to a hardware store, this is really handy when needing to do repairs that require items from the hardware store as well.
I get my oil change filter and oil here every time because it seems like it's just as cheap and a better product then buying it in the city. Not at all what I thought an auto parts store would be in a small town. where I grew up anything you bought in a small town was going to be twice as expensive. These guys are doing great with pricing and will get the part to you ASAP. The one down the side is that because they are so far away from the city you may have to wait a day to get a part. Not too shabby though for the money you save not having to go to the big city.
My wife and I were traveling through Caliente and needed a fuel filter for our pickup. It was Sunday on Labor Day weekend so we checked online for holiday hours and found they were closed on Sunday(no surprise) but nothing about being closed on Labor Day on the website or on the front door. We weren’t terribly surprised to find them closed for Labor Day just disappointed that they didn’t have the courtesy to notify their customers somehow. As former small business owners we were sticklers about informing our customers about any changes in our normal business hours.
