What a positive way to experience the past pioneer days. We were the only guests the night of our stay. It was a lovely evening sitting on the porch, enjoying the sunset on the Missouri breaks. We saw the deer in the field, heard the coyotes in the distance. We were served a delicious breakfast before we continued our journey to cross the Virgelle and Carter ferries.

Our stay at the Virgelle Mercantile was wonderful. Don was a great host and an amazing breakfast chef. Our room (the "Blankenbaker") was comfortable and had everything we needed. It was upstairs along with the other B&B rooms in the Mercantile building. We were a bit worried that our room was not air conditioned, but cross-ventilation with both screened windows open was all we needed during our mid-August two-night stay. There is an air conditioner unit in one of the common rooms at the end of the hall that we could have used but did not need it. The grounds surrounding the historic Mercantile and Bank buildings are very nice and fun to walk around. The downstairs Mercantile shop (and B&B check-in) is loaded with antiques and is fun to browse. I highly recommend taking the Virgelle ferry across the Missouri River before you arrive at the Mercantile. It completes the authentic feel of the place. We also had a wonder day canoe trip on the Missouri organized by Missouri River Outfitters in Fort Benton. This was a memorable visit and we can't wait to stay at the Virgelle Mercantile again!

We stayed a week ago, we were there to pick up an antique piece we had purchased! It was perfect! We stayed in a room upstairs in the Merc, and it was lovely. The owner is amazing and so accommodating. It felt like we were the only ones there, his service and food were soooo good, and his attention to detail is wonderful! A truly unique experience, and we will be back!

We had a wonderful three night stay last summer. Two of our party were in a guestroom in the main house and two of us stayed in a homestead cabin. We were all happy with the accommodations. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the stand alone shower and restroom was for those staying in the cabins. The food was really good and plentiful. This B&B is picture perfect and sits in a beautiful river valley, but the very best part was the owner, his sister, brother in law, and all the other guests that we met. Lifelong memories for sure!

The Virgelle Mercantile was amazing! Mr. Don the owner of this bed and breakfast is an amazing person. He can cook and was so hospitable. This place was so nice and quiet. We stayed in one of the cabins on the property . The next trip, I would definitely stay in a cabin. . The antique lover would be absolutely content to see all the things this bed and breakfast has to offer. We thank Mr. Don for being the best host. Janet, Emma and Donna. Until the next time. Thank you! 8-4,5-2023

History at it's finest with antiques to match. Fine selection of antiques from every era and country. Cabins looked adorable with a fantastic view of the Missouri river. Boat ramp and ferry right there as well. Off the beaten path for a reason. Tranquil with only time for peace and thoughts! Love the building old post office fixtures and kitchen wow! I missed lunch!!

We went there for their summer antique sale. There were quite a few people there. The rest room was clean and cute and well stocked. People in virgelle are very nice and it was fun to be outside . Going back next year.

Fantastic escape from the fast paced technology that holds the majority hostage. Don is a great host and goes out of his way to ensure you have what you need for a great stay! Peace and quiet and really nicely preserved treasures to see and buy! It is like stepping back in time and I would definitely return for a future visit! It’s a real adventure just getting there and when you arrive your in rush no to leave!

delightfully decorated with antiques inside and out. Stay in the bed and breakfast or in one of the cabins you are in an antiquers paradise. Beautiful scenery set on the Missouri river just a stone throw from you and don't forget to cross on the ferry. This is one of three ferries left on the Missouri river and who knows when they'll become just another part of history. Delightful wonderful hosts, easy to talk to and helpful. Loved this place

We wanted to stay at the Virgelle Mercantile after experiencing 2 of the 3 free ferries that cross the Missouri River east of Great Falls. We love to stay in historic, restored motels & the Virgelle Mercantile met our expectations. We were the only guests Don, the owner, treated us like royalty. Our room upstairs in the Mercantile was clean & the bath down the hall, & the shower in the ice house was great. Great antiques in the mercantile & the adjoining bank building. We stayed one night. You have to provide your own dinner/lunch but that is more than made up for by the 5 star included breakfast which was out of this world! Take a chance & explore rural Montana!

Antiques! You won't believe the quantity nor the quality of this remote antique store. Not to mention, if you're a weary canoeist, and would like a moment of relief from the river, this is the place. But with all that being said, the true value of this place is the kindness and thoughtfulness of the folks who work there. Don't miss an opportunity to experience it yourself, if you're anywhere close to this location, and like anything that the above mentioned. Your duck tape is on the way...

We stop in every year around the Fourth of July on the way to Havre! A wonderful antique store, they have rooms that we have not stayed in but will someday for sure! The owners are always fun to talk to, and the antiques are always fun to go through! No brainer stop, not far from the highway!

Though we live in Montana and travel out of the state often, we make sure that once a year, we take time to have an adventure close to home at one of our amazing destinations. This weekend we traveled to Virgelle, to enjoy a cast iron cooking class and a night at the Inn. The cooking class was fun and informative and the dinner we made on the fire and on the old wood burning cook stove was delicious. We stayed in the Inn, the room we stayed in was perfectly clean and very comfortable(wi-fi is available), and we had a great time meeting the rest of the visitors. Breakfast on Sunday morning was fantastic, also. We loved being surrounded by all the antiques and the beautiful views of wild life, the river and the cliffs. Sunday morning, before we left, we explored the rest of the property, we will have to make another trip to stay in one of the cozy cabins or the sheep herders wagon! ||Thank you to Don, Bonnie, Sandy and Jimmy for great weekend and all your hard work.

Two buildings full of antiques, a genuine homesteader's cabin to spend the night in, a friendly proprietor who's been there for 39 years, and a cold soda or ice cream cone provide plenty of reasons to visit, but just to cap it off the free ferry across the Missouri River is practically next door.

A super special place run by super special people. Check out their web site and be certain you understand what they are offering, and what they are not offering. We stayed in the Big Moser cabin. It's +/-80 yard walk to the old ice house they brought to the site and converted into the washroom/shower building. We had been camping so we had equipment to make our own dinners [Virgelle provides a fridge and microwave on the back porch for guest, plus a wash-up sink. Weber BBQ's are available. Be sure to food shop in Havre or Fort Benton on the way in: Virgelle is a long way from food store.]||Having said that, you're in for a treat at Virgelle Mercantile. The old store is chock full of fascinating artifacts/antiques that will bring back memories of maybe your grandparents' place. The views over the alfalfa field down to the banks of the Missouri, that HUGE Montana sky always changing, absolutely no noise from all those urban things you want to leave behind. Kick back. Enjoy.||Get ready for an absolutely fabulous breakfast each morning prepared by Victor. The coffee's on early. He'll tell you while he works just where he purchased every ingredient from local farmers as he gets it ready. It was a real treat to chat with him, watch him work and then especially to enjoy every one of his breakfasts. I'd go back tomorrow morning if I weren't 1,500 miles away. Thank you Victor!||Don Sorensen your host is a fount of knowledge of everything about the history of the people and places surrounding Virgelle. The river. The farming community. Cooking on the big cast iron wood stove. The provenance of every antique in the place.||Being a special place its likely the other guests, like you, will be special people. We were treated to have one of America's foremost artists stay at Virgelle when we were there: the only USA artist to ever be invited to display in The Hermitage. Like Van Gogh in the cornfields, he'd head out across the alfalfa, down to the river with his easel and paints on his back. Fascinating conversations with Don, Victor and fellow guests that stretched breakfast out through several cups of good coffee.

I changed my holiday plan so I could fit in staying at this place and was very glad I did. The place has unique charm, accompanied by history and creativity to make a stay here very memorable. The host Don and Jimmy make you feel at home instantly and the breakfast is incredible. I will be back

My husband and I recently did the Cook-Inn and spent the night in a rustic cabin in Virgelle, Montana. We really appreciated the wonderful attention to detail and great food during our stay. We learned some great cooking techniques that we are anxious to try. The accommodations were awesome and the scenery is beautiful. Thanks to everyone who made our stay enjoyable!
