Would not recommend doing any business with these people I had 2 small checks I forgot to cash less then $200 dollars that expired so I called them thinking they wouldn't have a issue with printing out a new check. The lady right away said she won't help me out and hung up on me mid sentence.. Completely unprofessional while I was being calm as can be.. Theres far better recycling centers near there that pay better and will pay you cash.. The few times I've been to northstar it's alway been a nightmare to cash there stupid checks even when I went to there bank they use. In my experience jr recycling and metro recycling pay better and will give you cash.
7/14/25 12:15pm. New pictures of where to go with aluminum cans. 11 months ago-We were there today at 11:30am. Went into the aluminum can bay. Had 40 lbs. Helper weigher didn't speak English, but we communicated and when done, took me to the digital scale readout to verify. Impressive, received cash and left. Cash guy called me by name per the name form. Only name was required. We're going back when have enough cans. An amazing amount of recycled product and many rules if you bring in a catalytic converter
I'm an owner/operator that use to haul there scrap out of there yard locally around Minnesota and some into Wisconsin, one morning they wanted to load me rite away with a load going to Chicago. No problem but I told them they needed to load me with a couple of local loads first because the Chicago load was so cheap a guy couldn't make any money doing it unless you had a couple of local loads to go along with it for the day. (the local loads actually paid real good at the time) They told me they didn't have any local loads to do so I told them I wouldn't be able to do the Chicago load then because financially I wouldn't make enough money doing it, so I was told I couldn't come back to haul for them. All I did was make a financial business decision for my company and they through a fit like a kid that needed a diaper change! I would definitely recommend not do business with this company!
I would give this place 100 stars for the easy access to rid your metal, household, car junk, aluminum, batteries, you name it they recycle it! We went with an open trailer full of metal thinking we would also have to unload it after loading it and we were amazed to find out that we did not even have to get out of our vehicle! They weighed our vehicle and trailer and then had a man operating a huge magnet and took it all out for us! All we had to do was drive around to the scale and weigh in and then park and get paid! We were so impressed with the amount of $ they gave us too! I so recommend this place to rid your metal, aluminum, household items, just visit their site and it tells you what they will or will not take and the amount for what you are bringing in! I LOVE this place!! BTW it is a very clean atmosphere as well! THANK YOU North Star Recycling!
First time here. Was given very good help and directions as to where to go to get weight and to unload. Very nice and helpful employees. Check out was a breeze also. Presented my license, was given my check and was on my way! Thanks folks!
Been going here for many years. Staff are usually minimally helpful. Just hope someone makes eye contact. They really need someone to manage the customers. Today I was here early, first in line on the scale. Watched the crane operator fill a semi for 30 min before I left. Nobody acknowledged me. Trying a new place today.
I’m sorry to say but I will no longer be coming here due to the rude customer service I received on Friday November first at 10am . I will be sure to look elsewhere. Thank you for rudely speaking to me and wasting my time I appreciate you arrogantly hustling people. That says a lot about this place.
Went yesterday 9/24/2024 and put scrap in an outside blue bin, (bin number 23 to be exact, which had 311 written on it a few times, which is most likely the weight of the bin). They pick it up and put it on the scale and total weight was 546 pounds. Subtract the 311 pound bin empty weight should equal 235. Well they only paid me for 205 pounds. Thirty pound difference at 3.35 a pound equals $100.50 I was shorted. Keep a close eye on weights and calculations when going to Hugo.
Been scraping for a long time they nit pick everything little thing here. They tried to give aluminum price for brass breakage… funny thing is the part he was talking about was actually steel. Went here for the last 4 years. Be prepared to separate every single little thing.
They gave me 4 cents a pound for steel and called it sheet iron. I had 128 pounds of steel. It didn't even cover my gas to drive there. What a rip off. I would have been better throwing my steel in my trash can !!
Pretty good place to bring your recycling in one of the only places open on Saturdays which is why I tend to drive this far to go to this one. The employees are pretty nice you do have the exception every once in a while there's a guy there who's kind of a jerk but overall they're pretty nice people. They also do not give you cash they give you a check so keep that in mind a lot of the other recycling places in the cities will give you cash this one is not like that. What kind of a big hassle for that reason. And for that alone I probably just wouldn't go back because it's so inconvenient.
Keep track of exactly what you are selling amd make sure that's what they write on your ticket, otherwise you will be screwed out of money. Just keep a watch on the scale weight and what you have on the scale. Don't be afraid to say hey that's not right and question everything.
Not impressed. No sense organizational process. Absolutely no clear direction provided to several customers who were also looking for guidance. We were told to drive to scale. So we Drove thru, weighed, waited, drove by other pickups and unloaded. We had no direction, a second truck was behind us on scale, with no employees in sight, so we moved off scale after green light per the sign. Only after waiting for another 40 minutes someone said we should have waited at scale. As I waited for service I was entertained by fast driving forklift drivers drifting sharp corners on the dirt between parked pickups on the lot. Lastly, couldn’t tell who are employees and who were clients. No uniforms other than the forklift drivers orange vests seen. We culled thru several people to figure out who were paid employees so we could ask what to do with material. What an Unorganized mess. We left the material on a hand truck and left.
I've been here twice with two different ppl and wasn't very pleased with the man who writes down the weight. What I saw and what he wrote down was totally different. My friend tried to contest it and got no where.. why not just write down the exact weight? I've heard alot of other ppl complaining about NRI. Exactly, what do you benefit from being untruthful? SMH!

This might be a great place for industrial level recycling, but it's a Cluster F☆☆☆ for the average Joe.
The only place I go to scrap. Why would I spend money on gas to go somewhere where I may get a few cents more.
Yes you have to sort to get the better price and yes 1 lower price metal mixed will give you the lower price for all but get real do the work if you want the better price.
Employees are friendly and helpful everytime I go. If you need help all you have to do is ask (nicely).
In and out today with 700 lbs steel and 80lbs of cans in less then 20 minutes.
I love the hugo location, some of the nicest people ever! I went at 1pm and service was so fast! I don't go often but this time had a trailer with a lot of steel from an old pool. I really appreciate being able to recycle it. Thanks NRI!!
I can only speak for myself. First time there. Couldn't have gone any smoother. Called ahead. The lady quoted me a fair price on the phone. I showed up a few hours later. Price was what she had quoted me earlier. The two guys that helped me were friendly and efficient. When I went to the office to get paid, it was quick and the lady was knowledgeable, sweet and professional. Ill continue to go back there. I see lots of reviews with lots of complaints. Ask questions people. Also, mistakes happen. To call mistakes "tricks" is slanderous. Anyway, if you've never been here and aren't sure if the place is decent or not, id say take your business there. GREAT service!
I have always had a good experience at NRI. I would suggest a digital pricing sign that could be updated easily daily in plain view for customers.
Also if closed on a holiday weekend say so on website. It said open on 5/27/17. I got there and found out they were closed. It was kind of a bummer and messed up my plans for the day.
Service was quick. I was in, unloaded, and paid within 15 minutes. But it seemed my load got smaller between the car and the scale and then again between the scale and the cashier. I wish I had "audited" what was written down on that little slip of paper!
The place says they close at 5, but we arrived at 4:50 and they were already closing up. They wouldn't help us and the other 3 people that showed up. This place should say they close 10 minutes early if that's when they are going to be leaving.
I stepped out of my vehicle and stated it was my first time so not sure what to do. Guy told me to back up to a blue bin to unload and he would come help me, which he did. Had over 200 lbs of metal and walked away with $10.54. found out afterwards that if not separated you'll get paid less....$.03 a pound is what I got plus some aluminum at $.08 a pound. separate BEFORE you get there. Advice I wish they shared with me before cashing me out. And their rules for separating are a bit detailed. They have a cheat sheet...which I got while getting cashed out not before.
People were nice there but I wish they were more upfront with the prices.
Had a great experience there. I was wondering where to go when i got there. A nice guy came right up to me to ask if i needed help when he was cleary busy with something else. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Took some extra time since this was the first time i went. The gal that checked me out was so friendly and very nice.
