What clients say about The Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center in Rochester Hills (MI)

It is slow for donations if you go on Saturday. My daughter takes me whenever she can, but she works most Saturdays. I'm very sad that they don't offer pick-up in my community. We are 4 miles away. But because we don't live in Rochester Hills, they won't come here. Lol. I've already given $1,000's of donations and have $1,000's more. But I'm disabled and don't have a car. I guess my donations are going in the trash. It's a shame...

Been going here all my life. Idk what happened but I don’t know why the prices are so high now. I saw a few beat up crusty shirts with holes in it but just because it says “Nike” it’s priced at 14 $. Ain’t this a place for people who need cheaper clothing? I find new shirts at an outlet mall for cheaper.

I will say this.
If your line to check-out and buy something is going to be 20-30-40-50 people long, half hour, one hour wait times....
You should probably close until further notice, until you can properly staff your store.
Right now it amounts to nothing more than wasting lots of people's time, energy, gas, etc. Things they'll never get back.Jan 02, 2026 -
Wonderful items here, Clean and well taken care of. Friendly staff. I enjoy coming here everytime I am in town. The lines can be long, but the staff is patient and kind with us when we have questions.
This is a pillar of my shopping trips.Dec 09, 2025 -
Per the staff at the store: The DONATION hours are from 10am to 7pm, Monday - Saturday, the STORE hours are from 9am to 9pm, Monday- Saturday. Happy shopping everyone!

Salvation Army is a thrift store and prices should reflect that. A lot of the items I found were being sold on the Internet at the same price or for a few dollars more. They’re given these items for free and charging prices too high. I’m seeing a lot of people who have left reviews about this same issue…

The store was clean and well lit, didn't smell. Prices were too high for me for a thrift store.

Don't buy any electronics from here. Their stuff is priced higher to begin with. They don't refund broken electronics they also don't test.

We have been trying to drop off clothes, shoes, etc. in like-new condition. They either didn't fit or we didn't like or they were worn one time an not liked. I've had a huge bundle of clothes in my itty-bitty cat for months! SAL is either closed, or the line in the "donation drive up" has been over 30-minute wait
They either need to expand donation drop-off, or allow after-hours or something. We've been stooped to dropping in any box we can find...Sep 13, 2025 -
If the larger woman on the mic didn't want kids in her salvation Army simply say that don't passive-aggressively tell everybody to hold their child. Rudest person on the mic. Do better.

One of the larger stores that I have been too. Lots of inventory & usually a lot of furniture too. Needs more help though. Expect long donation and checkout lines on the weekend. Not unusual to wait 20-30 minutes to check out.

Always finding good stuff at this location it seems. Large store with a huge selection of different types of stuff. It’s packed wall to wall with merchandise. And I’ll be back again. It’s a great store.

Whoever is proving these items should be ashamed. items are WAY overpriced. Example: There’s no way a fake plant should cost $40

Don’t donate Its Your responsibility
Please refrain from making donations to this establishment. The funds are allegedly diverted to higher-ups rather than the intended recipients. I recently visited the store and encountered several issues. Broken electronic items were displayed on the shelves without being tested for functionality. Furthermore, purchases made at this establishment are not refundable, which is considered a deceptive practice.Aug 12, 2025 -
A nice selection of clothing but if you go anywhere near closing time they are VERY strict/rude about having people in line 15 minutes before closing. No one is allowed to peruse the aisles past 8:45. They literally shut the line off at 8:45.

Second time we had good clothing, bedding etc to donate. First time, not open..apparently opens at 10a..nothing posted. When I inquired inside the store, was sarcastically told it opened at 10am..said they had nothing to do with it. This morning, pulled around to drop off area..door opened, card board boxes outside..no one out to receive donations @ 9:45am..so, my husband decided to take our 4 bags of clothing/bedding..everything almost new..and set them by the door/boxes. An older man came out yelling at him that they did not open til 10am..could not tell that by what was set up...kept on yelling that they did not open til 10am and we should wait..after we placed the bags right by the boxes/door. I thought the Salvation Army was a Christian organization..you would never know it by these 2 experiences.....we will not donate to them again. There are other organizations that are far more accommodating and decent in their communication and appreciative. We will not ever donate money again to them!

Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable. The store is one of the cleanest, or well kept Salvation Army locations I've visited. Will definitely be going again when I'm in the area.

I've been coming here super frequently since purchasing a home nearby, in the last two months they've more than doubled their prices and they have done nothing to fix the issue with their slow cashiers. I've set my things down and left at least 4 times now because I simply cannot stand in line for two hours. I wish I were exaggerating. Super disappointing.

Horrible service. There were 6 employees up front and only one person ringing anyone up.
That’s understandable. What isn’t is THEY DO NOT TEST ELECTRONICS NOR DO THEY HAVE ANY PROPER WAY TO TEST THEM OR HAVE A RETURN/EXCHANGE policy.
Not to mention the item in question was brand new worth $30, but they were selling it for $25…
When I asked to have it reduced, a black man hollers from across the room “it’s already discounted!”
I reply did you see or know the price of this item?”
He quickly shuts up and looks away, then proceeds to run away to another part of the building.
Lame. And rude as all get out.
Buyer beware.Jun 24, 2025 -
I have went to a lot of salvation army’s and this one was so dirty spilled stuff on floors doors are grimy everything just thrown around on shelves the floor was Absolutly gross it looks like it hasn’t been vacuumed or mopped in months. I would have thought we went to the ghetto not Rochester. Very disappointing.

No fitting rooms and only 2 mirrors in the whole place. The prices seem higher too. I miss the Dodge Park location

This is one of their larger (but not largest) stores. Occupies the entire building of a former Super Great Scott.
Well-organized and nicely merchandised, with polite, helpful staff. Of all the SA stores I've visited, have found consistently the best quality and best deals at this location. Each week features a different color tag on sale at 1/2 off. Wednesdays are Senior Discount Day; 55+ get a discount (check for current %). Mention discount before order is rung up.
Friday afternoon through early eve, and similar times Saturday, and Senior Day, are usually crazy busy. Closed Sunday. Special sale days are crazy till the last couple of hours before closing. Expect very long lines at these peak times. Store will also be messy during these times, but staff catches up quickly afterward.
NOTE: all merchandise is donated. They are a charitable organization, and do not purchase items.
5/13/25: Good news, it hasn't changed!May 16, 2025 -
Huge store with a wide variety of clothes for all ages. Worth a visit. The only negative is about Salvation Army pricing in general. I just bought 3 pair of pants to use for working around the house. About $12 a pair. $5-$6 seems more appropriate.

Hate this location. Why would they require a tag to buy something when just about everything is the same price? I found some amazing jeans but they didn’t have tags so I wasn’t able to purchase them even though there are at least 1000 jeans there for $6.99. I would even pay $20 for each of the jeans because I don’t like buying new clothes, but I couldn’t buy any of them. I’m surprised any jeans with tags are still there, because they tag the jeans on the logo tag, asking for the tag to fall off when people try them on. Terrible planning. 4/8 dressing rooms were closed so I was waiting in line for like an hour to try on 2 shirts and one tag came off in the dressing room. Horrible experience. Will not be returning to this location, I prefer good will.

Big store (largest SA we’ve ever been to), good selection of things. Prices are good but not the best we’ve seen. Line was huge for a little while but then settled down. Overall very good place. 8.5/10.

This store is the absolute worst, run by a greedy manager focused on making maximum profit. It's supposed to be a thrift store, but there is nothing thrifty about it. Why sift through dirty, old, stained / damaged merchandise when you can get new for a few dollars more, in a much nicer setting? Also, the cashier who checked me out asked if I qualified for a senior discount. Excuse me?? Not the most flattering question to be asking your female customers. If I was a senior, don't you think I would've offered up that info when I got to the register? The store is an eyesore and a lawsuit waiting to happen. When I walked up to the entrance, part of the building was falling off, and there was yellow tape around the piece of siding, or whatever to keep you from walking into it. Just shut it down already!

Never been here before and only a couple other ones the past few years but this place is big. The store had lots of things to choose from. It must be popular because it was busy.

Long line. Slow workers. Rude. Tell you to leave before 5 saying you won't make it in time even though it was 4:45 and 4 cars ahead of me. Work faster then! Don't need a tax slip and always closed on mondays for donations. Should have one line for tax donation slips and another line where people can dump their stuff quickly without documentation. Don't waste your time waiting in the line for over an hour, go to the mosque down the road they have a donation drop box. Simple, no line and still to a good cause!
