What clients say about MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center in East Lansing (MI)

Really great people most of the time, however the prices on tech have gotten substantially out of control, it borders on market manupulation. Whoever is pricing this stuff has absolutely no grounding in reality. The stuff rots on the shelves until its sent to recycling because nobody with a brain actually pays the outlandish prices for it. You're far better off going to local meets, conventions, and trade shows.

This place is like a fever dream. There is a bunch of useful electronics, home goods, chairs. And then a bunch of surreal stuff I am not sure where it came from. Wdym there is a whole antique horse buggy?!?

I visited here with someone the other day. The variety of stuff they sell is truly mind boggling

Very helpful employees. A lot of items to look at like office furniture, lab supplies, restaurant tables and equipment, computers, monitors, tv's, tons of books, kitchen utensils, vehicles, farm equipment, side by sides, just a few examples but many, many more things.

Highly recommended for students and families. I purchased the best chair for very cheap price

You can find pretty much anything here. Originally grew up in NH, which has SO many resale shops, and I can vouch this place has pretty reasonable pricing. If you're looking for cheap functional computers, you can find some good deals with some solid hardware. Would suggest!

Much better pricing and selection than a lot of other university surplus I've been to

I always am so intrigued by all the cool things you can find at the surplus store. I wish they were open more often.

if you want cool vintage clothes this really isn’t the place but if you’re looking for a time to dig through a random warehouse of stuff you’ll have a good time. If you need any lab supplies like beakers or goggles it’s a great place. They have a lot of really cool vintage furniture. They have bins of by the pound clothes, which is great if you like brands like hollister or abercrombie, a lot of it was from the 2010s, overall cool place and good prices lots of fun trinkets

Not as fun as it used to be, sadly. I guess the secret is out and now there is more money to be made by MSU. Only open on Fridays so expect a full parking lot and a long line as opposed to when they were open more often. Also the chairs and desks are much more expensive than they used to be. Used to be able to pick up heavy duty steelcase desks and chairs for like $5 or $10 now the desks are $95. Most adjustable office chairs were $75 and up, I couldnt find any of nice office chairs for the old typical prices of $10 or $20. Used to be only the Hermann Miller chairs were so expensive. Now no-name chairs are being sold for $45 and up.

Basically junk - the furniture is dirty and questionable, the electronics are meh though selection of monitors is decent. Price knockoffs are ok but you can get comparable via walmart sales, amazon outlet, and so forth. Honestly, only reason i'd suggest going is for office/student equipment

This facility collects used items and resells them at a much lower price than the original. They have everything from office supplies to clothing, they have electronics, books, and furniture. It is a great way for people to practice 'reuse reduce and recycle '! By shopping at the surplus store you not only saving the Earth but you also get to save some money

So many unique items for sale here at a cheap price. Lab equipment, industrial parts, cheap electronics, books, comics, art, desks, chairs, fabrics, souvenirs, etc etc. Friendly staff. Did I mention cheap prices? You can even buy a section of the floorboard of the MSU basketball court and signed photos of Tom Izzo I believe. My only complaints/caveats would be it's only open to in person shopping Fridays 8 - 3:30, and it's a little difficult to get to without a car. Besides that, it's 100% worth checking out. I have a friend in Computer Science that's planning on purchasing entire used servers from here at substantially less cost.

Found a bandsaw at MSU Surplus that I wanted to buy, it had a big flyer saying “this will be a bid item please see our website for details.” Because I didn’t want to miss anything I talked to the service desk for information on when it might be posted, the following week was their answer. I created an account and checked daily for 2 weeks but nothing was posted. I started calling the phone number about once a day but no one answered. On the 3rd week, from my original time seeing the bandsaw, I went back to the store. Someone bought the saw a week prior in store, it was never posted to auction. This is the second incident since this summer where common sales practices seem to have been “stretched.” I don’t think I was swindled obviously, this was just a bad deal for me but more importantly it was a bad example of management. I don’t think I could have been more thorough, I even took pictures. A store should not publicly announce an item for auction and then retract the announcement. It makes me wonder if a friend was able to purchase the item. Would I return to msu surplus again? Probably, but my confidence in their ethics/standards is going to be cynical for a while. Do they deserve 1/5 stars for this experience? I feel it’s a harsh rating but I’m annoyed, so I think they do, I’ll change the rating if I have a good experience in the future.

Lots of interesting things. They sell the most wonderful beef jerky here as well.

I love buying books for my kids here! Just got a lot of box car children books and some other favorites that looked new and gave them to the kids in their Easter baskets. They loved them!

They have the strangest collections available for sale here. It's insane what some people leave behind. I highly recommend checking their website first before going in blind because you will overlook something that won't be there next time and that's always a bummer.

You can find a lot of cool stuff here but this is not the same store it was before they moved. Not everything is a bargain anymore and at times the store is so packed that there are not parking spots. This once hidden gem is more like a typical thrift store with marked up prices. Sign up for their newsletter and follow them on social media and wait for sales to feel like you got a deal.

Amazing place with a nicest price ever. If you don't visit this place you're missing out son.

Just bought this desk for my international PhD student. $5.00 After 45 minutes of goo gone, Clorox cleanup (for the mold) , rubbing alcohol, scratch cover and furniture polish, it looks almost new. Staff was great...very helpful!

I love the maple syrup, honey, and other items made on campus. You'll have the best experience shopping here for furniture, electronics, and other items if you come here often so that you can catch the good items when they arrive. Prices are excellent.

Truly a remarkable place with everything from clothing and chemistry paraphernalia 2 recovered wood and products made from trees milled from MSU campus, you might find the golf cart that drives the MSU football players around their cleats or a coat left by the person who lived in the dorm room next to them. Insanely cheap prices, with different types of sales and events year-round. There may be no better place to buy a bike then here in the summer. Sometimes the Hunt is just as fun as the find here.

Great store that helps MSU and caring people recycle. Fun place to find furniture, eclectic items, maple syrup (made from trees on campus) and so many different things each time you visit. Check out their FB page to see the special items for sale each day that MSU Surplus is open. Make sure you check the hours they are open. Great place to take visitors to pick up fun souvenirs.

Lots of fun. Big mix of everything, you never know what interesting things you'll find. Great just to browse. Combine it with a trip to the MSU Dairy Store if you're touring campus. Be sure to check out the hours before you go. Not open all the time.

I was able to purchase some floor sections of the MSU practice court early in the morning. While I was there, I took some time to scout out the rest of the sale items. There's some reasonable deals, along with some random items and prices that make me shake my head. The guy that managed the MSU practice floor craze did a fantastic job though - kept us all informed, and kept the line moving along.

Various items, open most of the week; which is cool, right? They only sell items on two days, the rest is 'Preview Days'. So, you can't buy the items, you can just look at them. That's like going to a grocery store to buy ham, only to be told you can only look at it, but not purchase it.

A wide variety of really useful stuff, at really reasonable prices. I picked up a large piece of nylon and it was cheaper than I could have gotten anywhere else, and I think they were happy to get rid of it. Only open to the public a few days a week so check their website. Definitely worth the trip though.

Similar to other reviews. Interesting selection, with occasional great finds. Most items are very overpriced. Hours are also very limited. Staff is helpful and friendly. Good for cheap furniture and odd lot items in bulk, but otherwise, hard to justify rearranging my schedule to browse with any regularity.
