It was 1977 that I attended this camp. It was more so for the challenged handicap kids. My brother qualified and they made an exception for me to attend for 2 sessions. (Elvis Presley passed away during our stay)
Its important for me to express this now that I am in my 50s and the memories never ever went away.
You see, I was 13 years old and I did not expect to go to camp to do a counselors job. Basically the girls that were not as challenged as others were given the duties to care for the severely disabled! I myself was requested by the female counselors to change the maxi pads of the more mature females that could not do for themselves. It was absolutely disgusting! I wanted to go home. I had enough of this already. I was also assigned to help walk the severely disabled to the food hall and back and help them get dressed and do a counselors job instead of having fun. My parents paid them money to have them put me to work instead.
This camp owes me 60 days of pay and a refund to my parents for child labor. In the hot summer we had to stand in line at the swimming pool as the counselor's picked out what girls can go swimming next. There was never 1 single time during the whole summer visit did my feet ever touch that pool water. I suffered of sweat.
This is heads up to all the parents that is entrusting their children to this camp to let you all know that you are paying for adult supervision and they are pawning your handicap children off to minor children to do their jobs. Proceed with caution. When your child says they want to go home to them and they are crying they flat out refuse to call the parents and inform them of their child's anxieties of not wanting to be there anymore because its not a camp to them but it is a child labor facility to do the counselor's jobs.
