One of the creepiest landmarks in all of Massachusetts, and I mean that as a high compliment. It feels like you’re gazing into the bowels of the earth, with strange smells and sounds wafting forth. Just be careful and be ready to move fast if you even think that a train is approaching.

This is a really interesting place to explore. Just use caution, because this is an active train line (CSX). Trains go in and out of that tunnel during the day and night. This is a great place for train watching.

Pretty neat place to visit and it's a nice ride through the mountain to get there, it has amazing history many people passed building the tunnel, it is actively used if you do go into tunnel it gets dark pretty fast bring a flashlight and footing is pretty bad in spots

It’s called the “Bloody Pit” for a reason! Incredible railroad history here

Me and my friends walked the whole tunnel and we had our lights off for some of it. It was scary we kept hearing things we didn't know if we where paranoid or not.

Massachusetts first big dig. ? really neat place to visit,in a gorgeous area of the state. Small hiking trail off to the right side, leading to a small waterfall not to far up.

Remember, this is a working tunnel. Be careful . Bring your headlights.

I think it's worth hitting this quick stop if you're in the area. I don't recommend walking through the tunnel, as it still remains semi-active to this day. There is a small trail off to the right of the tunnel that leads to a stone wall and cascading stream. Interesting, if not, tragic history surrounds this built tunnel.

Such a cool, scenic & unique place! Highly recommend checking it out. Lots of interesting history. Unforgettable experience. Worth a look, even if you must drive out of the way a bit to get to it.

Its neat. There is a public bench by the side of the RR trax, where the water goes under and you can sit there on a sunny day and have lunch or a coffee break and await for the train to emerge out of the tunnel eastbound.. Very nice !! Water flow along the brook beside the trax, especially in mid spring, is very invigorating. BE carefull if you venture INTO the tunnel entrance, falling debris AND the danger of a train coming along !! Try the trail beside the tunnel ascending or just hang out. Huge parking area if you just want to hang out and chill. Great "take a break" spot, esp on sunny days! NO bathrooms, NO portajons. Plenty of woods to run into tho.

My favorite place ever. E V E R, for spooky thrills and beautiful scenery this is the destination ans of you listen hard enough you may just hear a scream! Be aware its still operating as a train tunnle so use caution and have fun ghost hunting!!

Mandatory place for tourists. It is worth checking with a guide the history of the place. Impressive.

So cool! The bridge has lots of holes, be careful if you choose to walk across. Scarier than I expected. The tunnel itself was creepy, but very cool.

Wow, is this place creepy! Thrilling at the same time. Could feel the cold air when we got close and was just no end in sight. Didn't venture in since it's still active and no trespassing signs. Cute little bench over to the side to sit and watch if a train did go by, huge wooden bridge just across the road to watch the people rafting underneath.

Rails show this to be an active tunnel (shiny silver top of rails). Great place to take a picture. As mentioned before, very creepy to walk up to this tunnel and stare into total darkness. Be careful of the bridge opposite the tunnel, there are holes in it that a person could fall through. Wouldn't know it till you are on top of them. Better to stay off bridge even though there is nothing stopping you from walking on it.

Went to the east portal in Florida. Went there during daylight to ghost hunt. Not quite brave enough for a night visit. If you plan to go deep into tunnel have a good flashlight handy. My ghost meter didn't detect any paranormal activity but the place definitely has a ghostly vibe to it.

Historic if you're a train buff or civil engineer! Nice spot for train watching but they are quite rare so....don't go expecting one unless you are 1. lucky or 2. have scanner, or other knowledge of schedule. We went within days of sale of line to CSX. ALWAYS respect (ie stay off!) railroad property. Trains still kill people who do dumb things!

A must see for any railfan and non railfan alike. Being near the tunnel's portal is such a strange and haunting experiance, staring into the void of the tunnel is such an awe-inspiring experiance. The cold draft coming out of the tunnel is such a strange sensation, especially during a warm summer day. The smell of diesel is very strong from the trains that still run through the tunnel on a daily basis. Incredible visit.

A must visit location when in the Berkshires. Amazing history here. There is about 5 parking spots right across the main entrance to the tunnel. The tunnel is completely dark so if walking in, please be careful and bring plenty of lights. This is an active railroad so be aware of trains. Enjoy the view of the mountain in front of the entrance and the waterfalls right next to it.

We like stopping here on our motorcycle trips across the Mohawk Trail. Interesting history about this almost 5 mile tunnel.

Explored Hoosac Tunnel today. Went about 1/4 mi in to the "turn back sign". Cold, raining from ceiling, pitch dark, misty and spooky. Loved it! Bring the brightest light you have and remember, it is an active tunnel.

I was so happy when I found this tunnel driving thru the Berkshires of Massachusetts. The Tunnel itself is spooky and mysterious to look at, but also a marvel in engineering that dates back to 1877. I am so grateful that I got to see this hidden gem.

This is a pretty nice place to view our history. There is a double waterfall on the right side of the Eastern Portal of the Housic Tunnel that was built in the early days of our Railroad days, the water is channeled down along the Railroad Grade to a smaller tunnel that goes to the river, all of which has been built by hand. On the other side of the road is a Railway Bridge and a side lane for cars and trucks along with a small walkway. From the Bridge the view is long and way down to the river. Alongside the Train Tracks is a mamoreale to the workers who built the tunnel and those who died during the building of the installation. The Tunnel Date is on top of the Portal. Looks like they are cleaning up the are from the last time I was there. Seams to look like they are going to replace some Tracks inside the tunnel.
