Excellent service. Easy to use. Variety of disposal options including clothes recycling, oil recycling, household waste disposal, tire disposal, single stream recycling and more

The Howard County landfill on Merriville Road seems like they don’t take anything anymore besides cardboard. I had 18 in.² vanity with the sink top. I had to take it to the scales and get weighed and then they charged me $105. About the same price as the vanity.. You also get to wait in line behind the trucks to get weighed. I remember when it used to be a nice place to get rid of your household trash without a lot of bullshit.

Not sure why a landfill even has reviews, but I guess for a landfill it is a nice place. It doesn't stink...unless you open the lid to the organic bin, like me.

Great place for hoco residents to get rid of trash. Its for hoco residents. No charge for residents. If you have a trailer or anything hooked up to tow hitch. By pass the main entrance and go around back. Found out the hard way. Its super easy. Make sure you have proof of residence. You can get rid of almost anything. Even used oil and batteries to general trash.

Very efficient workers allow the public to quickly place trash and recycling in the proper sections of drop off.

The landfill is set up to be efficient and orderly. The personnel are always friendly and helpful.

Very organized , well marked for easy drop off. Staff is aways very friendly. Peak hours expect a short wait, but it still moves along well. No charge for residential waste unless it's building materials disposal. Although it's measured by weight, roughly figure $25-$35 for a full size pickup truck full of building materials disposal.

My bank characterized a dump fee as a Marriot hotel because Alpha Ridge is in Marriotsville. But I think the dump is cleaner and has better customer service.

I tried calling to get a hold of one of the representatives before I went over there. All I got was a teleprompter voice that never got me through to a representative. I drove twenty minutes over there, waited in line, got on the scale... and then they told me that I can't dump my tree branches because I'm not a resident of the county.. SMH.. Carroll County and other landfills let anyone dump as long as they are willing to pay (how all of the landfills should be).. garbage policy, garbage place.

Really easy as a resident to drop off all waste, including electronics, paint, oil, propane tanks, and old bikes. Commercial side is great for construction projects, and the very best part is the Green Waster area. Great prices on compost and top soil and mulch. Mike is a gem, and it is great to have a place to properly dispose of busted up concrete and rock.

Showed up in two vehicles with my in laws to dump some branches from the yard. My in laws were behind me. Showed them my license and let them know my in laws were behind. They let us through and I then turned around to leave. I called My in laws and they said they had someone come and kick them out. Service is awful. I am a resident of Howard county

Great customer service. It was my first time bringing stuff in, and my correspondence with Kim beforehand made the entire process a breeze. Because I was able to discuss my haul in advance over email, I was given a sort of itinerary on what order to drop off my Hazmats, recycles, yard waste and construction debris in a way where I only had to pay for the construction waste and not the other stuff I crammed into our Prius. I was even given tips on how to load the car so that I wouldn't waste any time digging and advised to come in early to not be turned away at the gate. I definitely recommend reaching out via HoCo's contact page before your first visit to make sure your trip is a success. I don't think I had any of the problems that other reviewers had simply because I reached out for instructions and didn't just yeet across the county with a truck full of junk to act surprised that the people working here actually enforce the rules that are posted online. There is like a $100 an hour fee for being on site past the posted closing time. Maybe they should let people in anyway so the fools can pay down our waste collection fees.

They consider everything construction material and send you to get scaled which you need to buy a $45 permit ONLINE then it’s $110 for every ton of weight you have. I never knew it was so hard to throw away trash!! On top of that the staff is disrespectful and seems miserable

I am no longer feeling comfortable visiting this landfill, knowing the booth will direct me to the scale station to pay the fee and to waste my 15 -30 min for dumping regular household furniture. It used to be the place I could be in and out within 3 min. Now, the place seems to be run by a newly assigned government employee who only does basic math. Convenience is the key here. If you just charge a flat fee of $5-10 per dump, I will visit more often.

Old white man at booth was HORRIBLE and I will be calling the county to lodge a complaint in the morning. I had trash and one disassembled dog house and he told me I had to go through the scale for building materials. I’m not building!! He was digging through everyone’s trash and asking to see what’s in bags… the line to get in was horrendous!!! Fire this man!!!

This is the cleanest, most organize landfill. You have the option to dispose of every household items. You can only dispose of one tire per day. They are changing the recycle bins to green. They also have take home compostable bins

UPDATE: Sadly, they no longer accept Styrofoam ——————————————————- I take a minivan full of Styrofoam Coolers my Medicine is delivered in to the Recycling Center every few months. Great signs and easy to drive up to drop off any recycling items. Many more items can be recycled at the Dump than via curbside pick-up.

It’s a tough pill to swallow when you pay over $10k a year in property taxes and the county civil servants who work (for the taxpayer) at the county landfill find excuses to force you to pay for services you have already paid for. I can see why so many people dump trash on the side of the road here in Howard county. They were probably turned away from the landfill and it’s the only way to have the county accept the waste.

The woman attending at the scale was very unprofessional. Pretty much closed the window while I was talking just cause I didn’t live in the county. I’ve been here several times, and all I had to do was pay to dump, but she refused to even listen to anything I had to say.

Since becoming a resident of Howard County, I have come here to dump a variety of items like broken/waste appliances and yard waste/leaves. The employees have been helpful and I have never had issue completing what I came to do. I would recommend a visit if in need.

I drove 15 miles so I could recycle my old 27" tube TV, always trying to do the right thing for the environment. I pulled up to the booth, showed my ID to prove that I'm a county resident, and asked where to recycle TVs. The attendant said that section was closed and I should just throw the TV into the trash dumpster. There were three cars behind me so I had no time to question the guy. I dumped my TV in the dumpster, disgruntled about this ridiculous turn of events. As I was passing the booth on the way out I stopped and asked the attendant why the electronics recycling station would be closed on a Monday. He said it's not the day, they just ran out of boxes. I called the office when I got home and was told the attendant should have asked me to just leave the TV at the recycling station, box or no box. She said she'd look into this "mix-up." In general, I love the whole idea of my county having this kind service. I hate paying taxes as much as the next guy but I love to see them put to good use... except for this one day. Alpha Ridge Landfill is an exceptionally well-organized, advanced, and efficient program of coping with the variety of trash and recyclables we need to manage and/or dispose of in today's world. Yesterday was my first visit, and I'm impressed! It's a see-it-to-believe-it place, and I know they have a drone tour of the landfill on their website -- well worth a look! But if you need to visit in person, seeing is believing. Seriously.

Super well organized. They need to change the "rules" for permits. It's only good for one vehicle in the business. I had to buy another permit for my new truck, even though the one I had was still valid.

The landfill itself is excellent. It’s well laid out and has every option for recycling. If not for the inconsistent policy enforcement and inconsistent knowledge base among the employees, it would be five stars. Second time in three weeks I’ve either been involved or next to someone involved in the same situation and a third situation (with supporting photo) that I’ll get to. I was disposing of a broken down entertainment center and some sort of decking or bridge material found on our exit (76) that I cleaned up, by choice, as I used to on Ilchester and River Rd when we lived in Ellicott city up until last year. An employee comes over from the check-in booth and says the scale employees called him and said I had to take that through the scales. We’re both now physically standing right next to a guy with a mini van pulling furniture out and individual wood pieces from his van then tossing them in the dumpster. I asked what the difference was and all the employee could say was “I don’t know. They called me. You have to ask them.” He then walked back to the booth. He’s an employee and a representative, so the the response should never be “I don’t know” then walk away. Imagine if you were in ANY business yourself. Would that ever be acceptable to you? The other guy just kept on loading while a Toyota pulls up with an entire bed headboard and footboard. Two weeks ago another customer is putting large contractor bags into the dumpsters and two handed dragging them off so you know they’re full of questionable materials. An employee walks right between the truck and the wall and keeps on going. Apparently the takeaway is this- 1- cut up and put whatever you want in a black trash bag and you’re fine. 2- Don’t drop your tailgate where the scale employees can see and you’re fine. 3- Don’t expect any legitimate answers to their policies and you’re fine.4- Don’t help the community by picking up roadside trash. The county would prefer to have their county employees and vehicles take the time and resources to do it (because if I or others don’t, the county would end up having to) rather than you doing it for them without paying a few dollars in fees. Here’s the best one. Check out the photo. This is how they “recycle” those flat screen TVs. They make you put it in the proper location just to have them dump them in the general household trash??

Really glad the landfill has recycling for many common items. The household hazardous waste is especially great to have to keep chemicals handles properly. Also grateful to be able to easily recycle electronics and metal. The landfill can no longer take styrofoam but there are some great local and easy options for that still (for example in bowie). The website has excellent information on what can be recycled and where!

This is a great landfill for Howard county residents. The only downside is that not all stations at the dump are open all the time. For instance today the Styrofoam recycling was full. I can't blame them.. it was full, but I was bummed for going all the way out there and not being able to recycle the Styrofoam.

I moved from Montgomery county and they can't compare. Howard county employees talk to you with no respect and like you owe them something. As public employees they have much to learn

After reading reviews I had to comment on why I gave the place a 1 star (would've been 0, had Google allowed it!) I went to the landfill ONE time... my housecleaning customer in the area wanted me to get rid of some stuff from her basement. "Just take it to the landfill." she said. Fine. Until I got the 3rd degree, showed my ID (yes, I live in Ho CO) - then was informed I needed a permit. I said, I was certain my customer had one - but that didn't help! Mind you, it was just enough stuff (nothing hazardous) to fill the backseat of my car, I was turned away. The attendant was rude and condescending - made me feel bad for having the AUDACITY to want to use 'her' property to DUMP TRASH. I took the stuff home and dumped it in my apartments' dumpster. Thanks Alpha Ridge Landfill!

I was trying to dump old roofing shingles from my dads garage. When the lady at the scales informed my that she knew I was a business because I drove a truck and that I couldn't just pay to dump I needed a permit ( $30 extra ) I agreed to pay it and then she said I had to provide my S.S. # to get a permit. When I told her I wouldn't provide to her she again said it was obvious I lied and am a business and to use my Tax ID # as I'm not a business and I don't one and don't want the scale clerks to have my personal info I left with my trash in tow so don't try to dump here unless your papers are in order .
