What clients say about Blue Heron Campground in Strunk (KY)

The weekend was loud and crazy, but after that it was laid back & quiet. Great overlooks, outdoor museum at mine 18 and the Blue Heron Loop is well worth it!

The campground is small but very nice and well kept. Some of the sites aren't very long. The bathroom/shower house was clean. The window in the family shower is surprisingly clear and visible from the upper loop. We had to block the window with a tote lid. Each site has a food storage box. We did see a bear along the campground road. We would stay here again.

The campground is just inside Big South Fork NRR with multiple easily accessible trails. Be aware that most of the sites are around 30 feet long, but they're plenty wide enough for all your gear/equipment. There is a bathhouse that's clean and decently maintained. We had site 8 which backed up to a small pond. It's a beautiful, no frills, but very clean campground.

Campground was great for RV and large travel trailers. There are stes with 30 and 50 amp service and sites for up to about 50 feet. The 50 amp service are sites 30 through 40. There no sewer hookups, just a dump station. The camp is remote about 15 minutes from Stearns which has grocery store, auto parts and convenience stores. There is no firewood for sale, so bring it with or scavenge for wood. There are bears in and around the campground. The place is very beautiful ND peaceful.

We really enjoyed it. The sites are pretty close together so not much privacy. I really liked how they had a family bathroom so I could shower my kids with ease.

Great campground, well laid out and clean. Bathrooms were well maintained and the campsites were clean and well set up. My only negative(for us) was no trails leading directly from the campground. Or at least none we found. Will definitely go back. Great for camping with kiddos!

We stayed here for 3 days and although no host on-site everything was clean and orderly. Pros: Clean campground Nice bathroom/shower Small playground Quiet Cons: Close to other campsites No host Not enough shade

Overall it is a nice campground with a pretty good price since it has free showers and hookups at every site. Tent pad was very roomy. There was not a camp host when we were there, which wasn't great. The frogs are very loud, so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper in a tent. There is a lot of poison ivy in the woods around the sites, but it is cleared back some.

Great campground! Some of the spots look a bit tight for bigger campers but it's a very quiet nice place to stay! Site 31 will fit a 33 tt. Site 32 has a big tree that will keep you from going far enough back. 34 and 35 look to be the prime sites.

Great campground! It was clean, quiet, and peaceful. We were there when there wasn’t a lot of people camping. It was close to trails and historical attractions. Plan on going back soon.

Awesome state campsite! Great showers. Close to a bunch of destinations. Highly recommended for tents and smaller travel trailer. Very clean and well taken care of.

Beautiful area. The campground is well taken care of, clean and inviting. The bathrooms are very nice, and the camp hosts Rob and Jeanie are delightful.

Robert and Jenny were amazing camp host. They were very friendly and helpful. Upon arrival Robert came around and introduced himself and let us know if we needed anything let him or Jenny know. Campground was very clean. Will definitely be back and hope Robert and Jenny are the host when we return.

Lovely NPS campground on the Kentucky side of Big South Fork NRRA. It was pleasantly quiet and restrooms & showers were clean. Campground was well-maintained and the hosts were very friendly. Sites are somewhat short, which limits access for large fifth-wheels and some sites are far from level.

The campground hosts Robert and Jenny are great hosts. We really enjoyed talking to them and sharing stories! Looking forward to going back - hope to see them there again. The campground is nice and clean.

Nice NPS campground. Showers and bathrooms were clean. Water was hot. Sites were well maintained. Nice picnic tables and fire pits. Saw friendly rangers there all four days were stayed, checking in and doing maintenance. Would definitely go back and stay!

Spent 3 nights here in mid-oct in our new smaller fifth-wheel. No camphost on site, I guess it's late season and they are gone until next year. There were quite a few other campers here, which surprised me as it's mid-week and late season. Very quiet. I reserved site 30 but it was short and steep and couldn't get level, so moved to site 32 which was better. There appears to be some nice hikes that we will check out and then the old mining town/museum. The road getting in was windy and curvy, no problem. Closest town (Whitley City) for firewood, supplies, food, etc. is not close so bring what you need. Nice place.

It's a good camping spot. Plenty of hot shower water. You have to watch out for children on their bikes in the road. They have no hesitation to zip in front of your moving vehicle. Arrived without a reservation and got a good spot for 3 nights.

Well maintained campsites. The online map is misleading. We had site 30 and thought it would be secluded, 31 was really close but our neighbor was cool. We found some sites that better suited us, but at the time I made my reservations they were supposed to be booked but no one ever showed up. Bathroom and shower was clean, utility hook ups worked properly.

Campground is more open, "family oriented"; sites are not very private, too close to each other, and with a weekend stay, neighbors were louder than we'd like. Not a "nature" campground, but a perfectly nice stay. Walked over to the hike at Blue Heron mining compound, and that hike is terrific.

This is such a nice place to camp! It is in such a beautiful spot. The sites are spacious and well equipped. The bathhouse is basic but has what you need, even a nice dish washing area. I loved camping here.

We had a campsite reserved for another park, but it closed for a week due to a bear in the campground. Found this park with a two hour notice for a week of camping. Campsite #32 we have is almost level which made setting up our teardrop camper very easy. The campground was almost empty, with only three other campsites being used, probably due to school recently starting before the Labor Day weekend. The site was clean and the fire pit has a nice grate for cooking that is adjustable. There is a large gravel area for setting up portable shelters or tents. There are picnic tables on all the sites. The park doesn't sell ice or firewood. We found good firewood at a Kroger's that was about five miles away and ice can also be bought near by. The bear box at each site is larger than we have found in other parks. It's about 3 1/2 feet deep, 3 feet wide, and 4 feet tall. We would definitely stay here again. One thing to be aware of is the chiggers. They are small enough that they got into the camper through the window screens and they will absolutely bite. A camping neighbor was getting bit a lot and thought his puppy had fleas.

Great location and very quiet. Parked a 32.5 surveyor-legend and side parked a Toyota tundra. Site 45 in the corner is a downhill slope...bring shoring for your jacks at this camp. Our site had 30 amp and water. Dump station with dumpster near by...not even noticeable but super convenient. Bath house with toilets are in fair condition but could be better. Great outdoor sink area to clean your dishes and gear too....works great for dry camping or to avoid gray tank fills.

Overall had a great time here. Sites are a little close, but it wasn't packed so it wasn't bad. We stayed in a tent, site 1, which to alot of people would be bad spot, but it was great for us. On one side we had a big field for the girls to play in, other side was a site but Noone was there. We had to walk a little farther for the bathrooms but it was OK. Bathrooms were always clean. Would've liked to been a little closer to hiking trails and swimming holes, but only had to drive a short ways to get to them. On in the campground was a little more packed, mostly RVs. Paid $20 a night, had access to a real toilet (shower for $2 I think), and at our site we had electric outlet, water, food storage box, fire, and a picnic table. And we didn't have anyone bother us (or our stuff). Oh yea and pet friendly.

Been camping for 25 years and this past weekend was our first at this campground. It didn’t disappoint either. We had a great time riding the scenic railway, hiking to yahoo falls, and touring the Blue Heron mining Company. Campground Host went well out of his way to help us. Had a great Memorial Day weekend of camping.

Stayed at Blue Heron Campground for an long girls weekend. We had a great spot (number 29) nearby the bath house. The campground was nicely kept, even though the sites seemed fairly close to one another. We appreciated the bear boxes for our outside kitchen items. We had some trouble with the electrical box, but the office sent an electrician over. Which we were very grateful for since it was Friday night. He got it fixed up for us, Wayne was awesome! The bath house was clean and well maintained. We had a great time here, and look forward to coming back again!

This review is from July 2019. It was a wonderful campground. Peaceful and quiet. Our site #8 had a pretty view of the pond. Sites 9, 10 ,11 and 12 also have a view of the pond. It was nice to hear the frogs and crickets at night, The camp ground host was one of the nicest people I have ever met. The bathrooms were not great but they were clean. There was plenty of wildlife though we didn't see any bears, They are in the area. There is absolutely no cell service until you reach Strunk which is about 30 minutes from the campground, However the campground does offer free WIFI

We recently spent 5 days here and loved every part of it! The campground was clean, quiet and even with a few nights of the campground being full, it was still quiet and peaceful. Our campground spots were surrounded by trees (31-33) and even in the summer heat, the shade kept us cool and comfortable. Star gazing from the campground or the nearby overlook is wonderful!
