I find this church very conducive to inner peace and prayer. I sometimes stop in when traveling through the area and it is usually empty, except for Jesus in the tabernacle, or has only a few people either praying or taking in the atmosphere. There is some information just inside the main doors that can be used as a self tour. I like to pray at one of the altars or just look at the stained glass windows and statues and try to figure out what they represent. What a testament to those before us to leave us such a treasure. We should thank them and remember them in our prayers.
Historic Catholic Church. Pope Francis declared it a minor basilica. Located in small town of Victoria, KS. Steeples can be seen for miles around. Built by German immigrants in late 1800s.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place! We were here recently with a group of teen girls on a road trip and even they felt the serenity of it. Audio tours are stationed around the basilica, so you can listen to the history and detail of the building. I've driven past this many times, but will always stop in the future, and will have to make time to attend Mass here. I've never been to the gift shop, because they have limited hours, but I hope to get there some day.
Absolutely gorgeous. Open to the public. Quiet, respectful, reverent. Great place for one on one time with Him. Well worth the stop, not far from the highway.
An old Catholic church, it has a small, two story museum you can visit that explains the history of the church. Personnel there are very knowledgeable.
Not too exciting for some - but that's ok. It's a quiet tour of a very architecturally interesting building that looks like it doesn't belong here. But it is here. So if you live in this area or if you're just passing by on I-70, stop in and take a look. It's self-guided, so you can take your time.
The Cathedral of the Plains. St. Fidelis Cathedral is beautiful and has an interesting history. It is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas and was built by Volga German immigrants and was completed in 1911. I found it interesting that each parishioner was required to haul 6 wagon loads of limestone blocks from the quarry to complete construction. Definitely a beautiful place to stop if you're driving across the state on I-70!
An elaborate church, in the middle of nowhere. One of the 8th wonders of Ks., and dubbed the 'Cathedral of the Plains'. Not the kind of church I fancy, but pretty impressive looking.
This was a very interesting stop. It has been named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, and was qualified as a Minor Basilica by Pope Francis. It was built in 1911 and has been carefully maintained and preserved over the years. It is a beautiful building built in the likeness of the great churches of Europe. The stone for the building was cut by hand and hauled from a local quarry. It is incredible that such a small community was able to finance and build such a magnificent structure. The altar is said to contain relics of both St. Francis of Assisi and the patron saint of the church, St. Fidelis. It is sad that so much of the art in the church and around the altar distracts the viewer from Jesus, who should be the true and only recipient of our worship, by directing people instead to sinful human beings called saints.
As a Fort Hays State grad many years ago, just a few miles from St. Fidelis Basilica, I didn't really appreciate the architecture and history until just recently. This cathedral is a Kansas gem and don't know why it took me until now to see it. Simply beautiful!
Beautiful Church. While I was there a wedding was happening in the Church. I walked in just as a man was saying that a woman should be subservient at all times to her husband and that a man should love his wife as he so loves himself. I was surprised to hear that first part being said during a wedding ceremony in this day and age.
You have to stop by and see this place. It's one of the 8 wonders of Kansas. I have to say the same as everyone, beautiful. The stained glass windows tell the story of Jesus. They are my favorite. It was open to the public. No one was inside to guide a tour. We just walked through the sanctuary. Also it became a Basilica in 2014
We stopped in to see this beautiful church! Just amazing, and glad that we did. We would love to learn a bit more on the history there. All in due time. A must visit.
Such a beautiful cathedral. I enjoyed learning the history but most of all I enjoyed the peaceful and beautiful tour. There is no question as to why this is considered one of the eight wonders of kansas. It is worth a stop if you are anywhere near by.
Extremely beautiful historic Catholic church in Western Kansas. We've driven by on I-70 for years & never stopped until today.
I asked if photographs were allowed. (They were.) The stained glass windows were SO pretty.
We saw the double cathedral from the highway and decided to stop and find it. It is such a beautiful building inside and out. Reading some of the history of it located inside the church made it even more intriguing.
Later, my boyfriend and I found out that it is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. How cool
Stunning architecture, large stained glass, 14 carved panels, and an ornate alter, all with a rich history. They offer a few free educational materials including a guided audio tour, and a gift shop if you want a souvenir. Plus it's just a nice place to take respite from travelling - to rest your eyes from the road and your mind from the traffic and walk through the quiet peace of this beautiful gem along I-70.
Absolutely stunning church!! Would be perfect for a wedding ceremony! Tons of beautiful stained glass windows incase a crisp clean place of worship. Very high spacious ceilings to reverberate the choir. Inside a very small town giving it a nostalgic feeling. You can nearly feel the spirit when you walk inside. I was blown away.
