This review is based on an interaction while picking up a vehicle on behalf of an insurance company. Is it really necessary to deprive people of basic accommodations like ventilation or climate control? The hallway was completely sealed off from the employee area, with no airflow and no relief from the heat — just a small window in the door to exchange paperwork. On a 90° day, that’s not just uncomfortable, it’s unacceptable.
Got into a wreck a couple of days before going out of town, and my car was towed to Darrah’s. I called them while on my trip to find out how to authorize my insurance company to take my car. I was told that this can only be done in person, that I would have to come in with proof of ownership. Inconvenient for me, but understandable. When I got back to town and went to their office on Saturday, I was told my car had already been taken. They wouldn’t tell me who took it other than “insurance” or how it got authorized without me being present. I went the entire weekend without knowing where my vehicle was, or who had it, to find out they turned it over to my insurance company the day before, even though they adamantly stated multiple times that phone authorizations are not allowed in any circumstance. They made an already traumatic and stressful situation even more so.
Every time I have used there service they have been prompt and professional. It's also worth noting that Darrah's is the towing service the city uses as well.
Darrah's dispatcher was patient, professional, and easy to work with. The tow truck driver (I believe his name was Geoff) did an outstanding job preparing and towing our motor home. He had to run a long air line along the side of the motor home to our air brakes that required two air hoses to be coupled together. He took the time to wrap the coupling of the two hoses with a cloth to make sure it wouldn't damage the paint on the sidewall of the motor home. He also bungied up the rock guard so that it wouldn't drag while being towed. We live full-time in our motor home and it has to be driven carefully to avoid any side-to-side rocking that would cause the contents to shift around and get damaged. Geoff was aware of the situation and took great care while towing our home. He delivered it to the shop without any of the interior contents moving at all! Our home was delivered without any damage in the interior or exterior. Geoff was fantastic.
I highly recommend Darrah's towing if you need your motor home towed.

Darrah’s towed a car that hit my car from the scene without calling the police or notifying me as the owner of the car. This aided the individual in the hit and run that caused severe damage to my vehicle. We had to locate the car that hit mine and back track with the police to find out Darrah’s had towed the vehicle from the scene. Their tow truck drivers should know and understand that accidents are in fact crime scenes and the police should be called!! This was not done aiding in a drunk driver getting away with drunk driving and a hit and run. Very shady at best and definitely not aiding in public safety!! This drunk driver could and still can kill someone and this company is aiding people like this to continue to offend !! Also noted and stated by the police that Darrah’s was not cooperative with their investigation !!
Had car towed little over a year ago from cedar rapids to walker area for less than 140 dollars quote for the the same row today was over 240 and not on a rush tow. 100 dollar mark-up that fast is theft!
Yesterday I had you guys tow my car from marion to central city iowa. Between andrew, Chris and Jericho the tow guy i had the most amazing experience. I absolutely love Darrah's towing service hands down I don't care what anyone says about them. I have never had a bad experience yet keep up the great work and stay safe.
Got in a wreck on interstate vehicle was totaled, Darrah's was great got it towed off the road. They were excellent to deal with getting items from the vehicle after it got towed and dealing with insurance to get it moved. Everyone from front office to guys working in the yard were great to work with. entire crew went above and beyond on everything, and price was reasonable as they had to tow my pick up and trailer off the road. Ten stars if they had more to give.
This place is a total rip off. If you get in an accident and you don’t make a lot of money. Don’t let the police send your vehicle here. 250 ish for the tow, 60 dollar fee for something to do with police calling it in, taxes, 20 dollars a day after impound. They will put your car on auction if you don’t grab it in time. They gave me 21 days to get it. This type of business should not be legal. The amount of money they make off this scheme is incomprehensible. Shame on this company and the people that own it. Also you have to have car insurance if you wanna go look at your vehicle. You can’t look at it unless you are paying to take it off the lot. ITS MY CAR, this place is a joke. Police must get commission off of sending your cars here bc I didn’t have the option of doing my own tow service.

This team has been taking care of us since 2008, and I’m confident they’ll continue looking out for us in the future. These guys are always training to handle whatever situations they come across. Way too expensive $800 they charge me after pulling my semi truck trailer out. Was stuck in grass in palo, IA will not recommend this business. Says one thing over the phone and charged more than two times. Total rip Off.. Think twice before making a call.
We moved here from Louisiana and therefore didn’t know many people here in Hiawatha yet at all and my Jeep needed to be jumped off so I could take my grandson to the doctor. Seeing as how Darrah’s is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to where we live, my husband calledthem for help. They were just opening up for business and the lady on the phone told my husband that someone would be here within the next 30 minutes or so. A neighbor finally realized that we were having trouble and jumped us off thankfully, because nobody had shown up to give us a jump from Darrah’s over 2 1/2 hours after my husband called. we were highly disappointed as would anyone be. But we also saved ourselves $65, which is ridiculous to say the least.
Broke down on 380 right before an exit. Had the police come out until a tow truck driver could get to me. The police said they use this company so I had them call. Darrah’s showed up shortly after. The driver was awesome, lady at the desk was nice and the whole experience was better than it should have been considering my car had to be towed. 5+ star. Driver and the lady at the front both deserves a raise. Thanks Darrahs!!
If there was a way to give zero stars I would. They told me it would be 2 hrs and when I called them at the 3 hr mark I was told they had no idea when the truck would arrive. The operator on the phone suggested I just leave the keys in the car and they would be along eventually to pick it up. REALLY?!? Worst service ever!!
Update! The driver (Daniel?) arrived about 45 mins after I last talked to the operator (about 3.5 hrs total) and was so FANTASTIC that I upped my rating from 1 star to 3 stars. If he had been the only person I talked to, it would have been an easy 5-star rating.
We have used them twice now both times the price was fair free would be great lol. But they was the cheapest of some of the others we called. The guy who towed our car both times was nice and professional. Maybe the third time I can get a frequent user discount .
I locked my keys in my car about 20 miles from Darrah's. I called around 10:30PM and talked to a nice lady who sent someone right away. The gentleman who arrived (Daniel) was extremely friendly and had my door open in about 15 seconds. To top it off, the bill was almost $70 less than the original quote. Highly recommend!
Quick service and very fair priced compared to competition in the area. They will get you taken care of. People only want to bash the place when their vehicles get impounded or sent there by police. They have no control on that they just do their job they are given at set fees. They get a lot of grief that doesn’t belong on them.
I called this company to jump my vehicle as I left a dome light on the night before! The truck is 4 years old and gets looked at regularly, but after trying to little jump packs and refusing to even attempt to jump it with cables the employee looked over at me and said “you must have a bad battery” after explaining that the truck was just recently in the shop and came back with no electrical issues, the employee was insistent that it was my vehicles vault! I called another local towing company and they had me jumped in 4-5 minutes! A couple of jumper cables was all she needed! Absolutely horrible customer service and even after not being able to jump my vehicle they offered to tow it (how convenient) and also informed me I was still going to owe them money for them not being able to help me in any way, which is not going to happen.
This place doesn't even deserve 1 star.
I was in an accident a week ago that totaled my car, so CRPD had my car towed by this company. The lady at the front desk is god-awful. I was rear-ended by another driver, lost a car that I valued very much, and was left with significant pain. The last thing that I needed to deal with was a crabby lady that treated me like I was the one in the wrong. CRPD needs to do business with someone else. Darrah's Towing & Recovery is a joke, and they deserve to go out of business. And the lady that runs the front desk deserves to be jobless until she learns how to treat people right. Sorry. Not sorry.
My car broke down Saturday and we spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with our insurance company’s road side assistance and the guy couldn’t find anyone to tow us. Granted it’s the worst weather ever and tons of cars and trucks needing tows. We finally hung up with our company and took matters into our own hands and called Darrahs, who we have used before. A real person answered the phone immediately and advised us to call back Monday morning.
I called this morning at 7am, by 7:45 our car was on their trailer and headed to our service place of choice!!!!

Absolutely wonderful! My son and I were stranded in the cold in CR, they came to try to give us a jump and when that didn't work towed us to a shop. The gentleman was very kind, had us both laughing, and even showed my son how the wench worked. Reasonable price and fast service. 10/10 recommend.
But the fleet of vehicles always on the go, Darrah's has been consistently helpful. Helpful at those times you'd rather not have to call them, lol
