Everything about our trip with Mackay Bar Ranch was over the top and exceeded not only our expectations but all other experiences! Spending any time in the Frank Church Wilderness is a gift - but this crew brings a passion to showing and sharing their beautiful home. Every detail in our cabin, on the grounds in the common area and around the fire are intentional, warm and cozy. Joni did not miss a thing! (Her team did not go unnoticed, but I can't remember their names! They were obviously working behind the scenes while we were all playing, relaxing and adventuring!) She is welcoming from the booking to helping to get you prepared and carries it through every meal and moment. Each meal was delicious and magically delivered to 14 people at the same time. Buck and Taylor are brilliant jet boat captains and were generous in making the most out of a short amount of time! This was our 4th trip to the area and our first time to get upriver - beyond the bridge. They were the ultimate tour guides, master navigators and thrill captains!! This was a trip of a lifetime and hopefully I will be lucky to make it again! We are forever grateful you are willing to share your love of the river with folks like us.
What an unbelievable experience from start to finish. Buck and Joni have something very special out here on the Salmon River. We brought a group of customers and employees, and it couldn't have been a better trip. The river was up a little bit from lots of rain before we arrived, but Buck still put us on the fish and everyone had a great time. I tell everyone that even if we came all the way there and didn't catch a single fish, the trip would have still been incredible. You simply can't say that about most places. We'll be back next year! 10/10 trip
I was tentative at first given the travel time and 7 hour itinerary, but it was totally worth it! The experience was unlike anything else! We got to explore deep into remote areas in a convenient and luxurious way - something you don’t find often! We got to take in the beauty of the scenery, visit historical sites, and swim at our own private beach. Would definitely recommend for anyone traveling in the area!
This hunting trip sets the gold standard for high adventure, western hospitality, incredible cuisine and 5 star accommodations where my sons and I were treated like family. Buck, Joni, Dax, Wes, Alex, Taylor and Alice provided an experience that comes from genuine teamwork, professionalism and top shelf commitment to make sure we were immersed in sharing their “lives at Mackay Bar Ranch”. We saw bears, deer, elk, whitetail, Rocky Mountain sheep, bald eagles and panoramic vistas as we hiked, hunted, jet boated, drove side-by-sides, rode mules, hung out with their dogs and listened to the stories of the characters that could be the script for a reality series. We will be back for a fishing trip!

Mackay Bar Ranch is a great place to take the family. We have been coming back annually for steelhead fishing for several years now. The guides are professional, personable and know how to put you on the fish. The accommodations, food, and staff are wonderful. My husband and I have visited twice before and loved it! This year we opted for a trip with family and cant wait to do it again. It’s a perfect blend of activities for a large group to do together or step away for something separate. From fishing to swimming and short hikes, there was something for everyone. And the food is beyond anything you may expect on a back country trip. Joni and Buck are amazing hosts and Jake was our amazing guide! Highly recommend a trip to Mackay Bar, whether you live far or near the breathtaking views and good people are worth it.

Mackay Bar is a beautiful place located in the center of Idaho on the Salmon River. It is surrounded by the Frank Church wilderness area. Mackay bar is a great guest ranch and outfitter. They have great steelhead fishing, back country elk hunting along with bear and wolf hunting. My family and I have stayed at Mackay Bar several times and love the experience that we get there. Whether you are a hunter, enjoy fishing our just an outdoor enthusiast Mackay Bar is a very special place to go and experience back country Idaho. Buck and Joni who own and run the ranch are amazing and work very hard to make sure you fully enjoy your experience at Mackay Bar.
