The Athens-Clarke County Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) is a one-stop drop for items that can’t be recycled at the curb or at the ACC recycling drop-off sites due to their chemical composition, hazardous components, size, shape, etc. These materials will be collected at the CHaRM for reuse, recycling and in rare cases, safe disposal. CHaRM is open to anyone, even if you do not reside in Athens.

We volunteered here at Rivers Alive and cleaned up old trash that had scattered along the fence. The staff are very pleasant, and you can see that there is a lot of work going on here with sorting everything from old fire extinguishers to electronics and refrigerators. It's nice to know that such an important place exists in the city.
Decided to try the Teacher Reuse Store but was met with extremely rude staff. There were no clear signs indicating where to go or where the reuse store was, which made it difficult to navigate. When I accidentally walked to the front of the building, one black male staff member began yelling at me instead of offering guidance. As I started walking to the correct area, he continued shouting in my ear, saying, “You’re a teacher and you can’t read or hear? You’re supposed to go to the back!" I informed him that there are no signs nor any staff around to tell me where to go. He continued to yell and berate me.
I'm very disappointed that I was spoken to in this manner, especially for a first time visit. Because of this unprofessional and disrespectful treatment, I will not be returning.
I absolutely love this service provided by Clarke County. The staff are always friendly and helpful and they accept all kinds of materials. My one complaint, that they have cut hours way down and I barely am able to make the days they are open. I miss the Saturday morning option they used to have.
Update 6/2025: Google notified me of this out of date review - Saturdays at the CHARM center have been back and are wonderful! Thank you!
This is a great resource. Not only do you have a place to properly dispose of all sorts of toxic or otherwise complicated materials at a reasonable cost, the staff here could give seminars nationwide on how to give great service with a smile. I've never had a bad experience while bringing in all sorts of nasty things,; they just roll with whatever you have (unless it requires specialty disposal).

Helpful people, good for the environment, reasonable costs. I’ve dropped off paint and used cooking oil. In and out in 10 minutes. Throw it here instead of the garbage can.
Had some fertilizer and other chemicals, tires on wheels, and some pallets I needed gone and didn't want to throw in my garbage. Really nice and helpful employees. A great, straightforward service that is decently priced for locals and for people not living in the county.
What a place the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, they accept so many thing that you would never expect to be able to recycle. Sometimes thing can be reused.
Amazing experience. I had some empty tanks, batteries, paint and other things that I could not dispose of in regular garbage. I drove my car up to the location and got in the line of cars. Unsure if this was what you needed to do, I quickly got into a spot and the workers there directed me where to go with my items. I paid $13 for my load, partly by weight and part by item. It was a wonderful and easy experience. They didn't take a couple things, but I was able to take the remaining items to Habitat for Humanity ReStore around the corner.
Always have a good experience when I stop by, the people that work there have always been helpful. If you have everything sorted, it should go smoothly.

This is a great place! My county couldn't take some electronics I wanted to recycle and recommended CHaRM. CHaRM accepted things other places wouldn't and helped me to sort it into the proper bins. Though there was a small fee because I was coming from outside of Athens, it well worth it to keep these things out of a landfill. Drop off was easy and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Definitely worth a little extra time to bring things there.
Since metro Atlanta curbside recycling does not accept glass, I was excited to find that CHaRM will take them. Had been to a few recycling centers/kiosks in California where there is CRV incentive, but they are usually quite grimy, smelly and dirty. In Atlanta there isn’t that cashback, so I was even more than impressed with CHaRM for so many reasons: (1) the center is so organized, clean, and informative with everything clearly labeled so that you feel like you’re learning something (there were 3 bins just for glass! Clear, green and amber. With banners telling you why they sort this way and what they do with the glass collected!). (2) they accept and recycle nearly every type of material you can imagine, from many kinds of plastic including plastic bags, aluminum, to styrofoam, to mattresses, to paint, and electronics to chemicals (3) the staff is super friendly and helpful, no judgment when you’re not sure which bin something should go to, just directs you to the right place (4) open til 3pm on Saturdays, so that non-morning people like me can still make it in (5) lets you feel good about doing your part to save the our planet, and on a Saturday it was buzzing with dozens of other citizens also doing their part! Love that community of like minded people! Will definitely be back often!!
