Our salesperson, Mike, was very helpful in answering any questions we had about the car we were interested in purchasing. He did not have a high pressure approach and allowed my son and I to talk privately and did not walk away as if we were just browsing. He allowed us to do a pre inspection of the vehicle at the shop of our choosing and even dropped the car for us off because it was within a reasonable distance. After accepting their offer and dropping off a deposit to hold the vehicle. We went back a few days later to take delivery. Almost all of the documents had been prepared and we were in and out of the office in less than an hour. It took longer than expected because the car was cleaned and was given a final delivery inspection. Overall it was a more pleasant experience than purchasing a new vehicle from a dealer. I purchased a 2021 Range Rover Velar from Phillips Auto in March 2023 with 17,000 miles. Given the vehicle’s age, mileage, and the dealership’s high-end reputation in Newport Beach, I reasonably expected the car to be well maintained and properly inspected prior to sale.
Just over one year later, the engine began to sputter. When I took it in for an oil change, I was shocked to learn the vehicle required a full engine replacement due to tar-like oil buildup throughout the engine, allegedly caused by maintenance neglect prior to my ownership.
I contacted Phillips Auto and requested proof of maintenance before purchase. They provided documentation showing an oil change at 15,000 miles. Based on this, I hoped my warranty company would cover the repair. However, the warranty inspection revealed that the original oil filter was still installed, directly contradicting the records Phillips Auto provided. As a result, the warranty claim was denied.
Ultimately, I was forced to pay $22,000 out of pocket for a new engine on a 2021 vehicle.
What is most disappointing is that Phillips Auto appears to have performed no meaningful maintenance checks or inspections prior to selling the car. When this catastrophic issue surfaced, they offered no support, accountability, or assistance and simply washed their hands of the situation.
When you buy from a dealership that markets itself as upscale, you expect honesty, transparency, and due diligence. That was not my experience here. I strongly recommend that anyone considering purchasing from Phillips Auto independently verify all maintenance records and obtain a third-party inspection before buying. I would not do business with this dealership again.

They were able to talk with the leasing company, and handle the paperwork. Bianca gave great customer service answering my questions and provided a great experience overall--amazing to work with. There was a situation at the end where they had to go with a lower offer that was discussed prior on the phone with Trevor(before seeing the car) than the price discussed in person after inspecting the car which was very confusing especially after all the paperwork was signed, but besides this, it was a positive experience. Unfortunately, the last situation left me not feeling great leaving, hence the edit.
